Description
The present invention relates to means for scintillation counting containing a stabilizing additive and the use of these means for liquid scintillation counting.
It is known to the person skilled in the art that scintillator counts have to be kept in the dark (equilibrated) for some time before counting, since they tend to give an often considerably increased count value (cpm = counts per minute) due to exposure to light. This leads to erroneous measured values, which are all the more annoying since they only become clear when the blank value is not shown. It is not certain with certainty whether it is a matter of phophorescence, chemoluminescence or other phenomena. However, since the process is obviously slow, there is an undesirable delay between the preparation of the counting sample and its trouble-free measurement.
To eliminate this disadvantage, it has so far been necessary to prepare the scintillator preparation in good time and to store it at a constant temperature which is as low as possible (0 to +4 ° C.) and in the absence of light. This "adaptation time" varied within wide limits, i. H. between at least 30 minutes and 24 hours.
According to the disclosure in German Offenlegungsschrift 20 22 390, the chemiluminescence postulated there can be reduced to an acceptable blank value, i. H. can be reduced to a blank value between 48 and 120 pulses / minute (cpm = counts per minute) if the scintillator preparation is treated with certain basic compounds, but the effect is of very limited duration.
It has now been found that the sensitivity to light can be advantageously reduced if stabilizing additives are added to the scintillator preparations. These additions make it possible to avoid a long adaptation time and to eliminate a possible source of errors in the measurement.
The scintillation counting agents according to the invention are characterized in that they contain a stabilizing additive.
Such stabilizing additives are inorganic or organic reducing compounds and mixtures thereof. Inorganic or organic compounds of preferably divalent sulfur and nitrogen and organic phosphorus compounds are particularly suitable. Examples of such compounds are: ammonium sulfide (18% by weight, aqueous solution), ammonium thiosulfate, sodium dithionite, alkyl mercaptans such as octyl mercaptan, thiophenol, pyridine thione, hydroxylamine hydrochloride, hydrazine hydrate, phenylhydrazine, mono-, di- and trialkylamines, such as mono- , Di- or tri-n-butylamine, trialkyl phosphites such as triethyl phosphite, trialkyl phosphines, especially tributyl phosphine, benzotriazole and 2-mercaptoazoles, such as, for. B. optionally N-alkylated 2-mercaptoimidazoles, -benzimidazoles or -benzthiazoles. Organic mercaptans and sulfides are preferred.
The agents according to the invention contain the stabilizing additive in amounts of up to 100 percent by weight, particularly from 0.005 to 100 percent by weight and preferably from 0.05 to 10 percent by weight, based on the scintillator active substance. In ready-to-count solutions, based on these solutions, 0.00005 to 1 percent by weight, preferably 0.0005 to 0.1 percent by weight, of stabilizing additive is used.
The surprising thing about the use of these stabilizers is that the expected quenching (chemical quenching) remains limited to an acceptable level.
Possible scintillator substances for the agents according to the invention are both primary solutes and mixtures of primary with secondary solutes, such as, for. B. from Nucleonics 13, No. 12, December 1955, pages 40 and 44, that from Journal Chem. Physic 50, No. 11, June 1969, page 4962 and the compounds known from German Offenlegungsschrift 20 22 309. 4,4'-bis (2,5-dimethylstyryl) biphenyl and 4,4'-bis (2,4,5-trimethylstyril) biphenyl, which are known from US Pat - Patent 3,984,399 are known.
The agents according to the invention are either ready-to-use liquid scintillators or solute concentrates which can be used to produce liquid scintillator preparations for liquid scintillation counting.

In addition to toluene and xylenes, preferred solvent systems are toluene / methanol (1: 1) with the addition of about 2% water, methyl cellosolve / toluene / naphthalene (40: 60: 8) with up to 4% water, dioxane / toluene / naphthalene (40: 60: 8) with up to 10% water or toluene / methanol / ethanolamine (50: 44: 6) or the corresponding mixtures with the xylenes. The arrangement of the solvent system depends primarily on the nature of the substrate to be measured or of the isotope to be measured, for the latter, for example, the most frequently considered representatives are Cu, H3, S35, P32, Fe59, Fe55, 1125 and I131.
The following examples illustrate the invention without restricting it. Percentages are percentages by weight.
Beispiel 1 example 1
* A ready-to-use scintillator solution, dissolved in 100 ml of toluene, as primary solutes 800 mg of 2- (4'-tert-butylphe-: nyl> 5-biphenylyl-l, 3,4-oxdiazole (butyl-PBD) and as secondary Soluten containing 180 mg of 4,4'-bis- (2 ", 5" -dimethylstyryl) -biphenyl, 100 mg of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole are added to the stabilizer. *
20 ml of this solution are exposed to a UV lamp (366 mjj.) For 15 minutes. The immediately following measurement of the impulses per minute shows an approx. 104 times smaller blank value compared to a sample without stabilizer.
After 22 minutes of equilibration in the dark, the non-stabilized sample is still approximately 103 times higher than the stabilized sample.
Results of the same order of magnitude can be obtained if 3,3-thiodipropionic acid, 2-mercapto-l-methylimidazole or 2-mercaptobenzimidazole is used instead of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole.
Beispiel 2 Example 2
i5 Verfährt man wie in Beispiel 1 beschrieben, verwendet jedoch als sekundären Soluten l,4-Bis-(2"-methylstyryI)-ben-zol, so kommt man zu ähnlich guten Ergebnissen. i5 If the procedure is as described in Example 1, but using 1,4-bis- (2 "-methylstyryl) -benzene as secondary solutes, similarly good results are obtained.
Beispiel 3 Example 3
20 If, instead of toluene, a mixture of toluene and a surfactant, such as, for. B. ethoxylated isooctylphenol, (approx. 1: 1) is used, this also leads to excellent stabilization.
