interrupted.
The present invention relates to an electrolytic bath for
white gold plating and its use for obtaining coatings
galvanic.
The bath to which the invention relates is an acid aurocyanide bath containing, as alloying metals, nickel or cobalt, which co-deposit with gold, giving alloys of high carat but, however, of perfectly white color and very hard.
There are already acidic aurocyanide baths containing nickel or cobalt and organic acids, such as citric acid, intended for the electrolytic plating of white gold alloys, or at least very pale in color. However, such baths have certain drawbacks due, in particular, to the evolution of hydrogen which occurs at high current densities, which causes the formation of pits in the deposit and of internal tensions greatly limiting, in practice, the use of such baths and the thickness of the coatings that can be obtained therefrom. Many additives have been recommended in an attempt to limit these drawbacks, for example arsenic, hydrazine and certain polyphosphates, but whose effectiveness is not total (see Swiss patents Nos. 420777 and 412512).
Furthermore, there are baths for the plating of white orcadmium alloys based on alkaline aurosulfites, these alloys having the disadvantage of yellowing over time and lacking in ductility, that is to say that they tend to crack, especially after folding the substrate (branches of glasses for example).
The bath of the invention remedies these defects. This bath, which contains gold in the form of alkali or ammonium aurocyanides, nickel and / or cobalt in the form of water-soluble compounds and at least one free or salified organic hydroxy or amino acid, is characterized by the the fact that it contains, in addition, a brightening and anti-tensioning additive constituted by an organic sulphonic or sulfinic aliphatic and / or aromatic compound, and that the hydroxy- or amino acid comprises 2 to 8 carbon atoms, 1 to 6 groups -OH or 1 group -NH2 and 1 to 3 groups-COOH.
The sulfonic and sulfinic additives which are most suitable in this application are those which are known for their beneficial action in nickel plating baths drunk with cobalt, and it has been particularly surprising and unexpected to find that these compounds have such a favorable action. in the present bath of gold alloys, action which, until now, had never been recognized.
Among these additives, mention may be made, in general, of saturated or unsaturated aliphatic sulphonic acids, aromatic, substituted or unsubstituted, monocyclic or polycyclic sulphonic acids, sulphonamides, sulphimides, sulfinic acids and sulphones, the acids which may be mentioned salified with alkali metals and ammonium.
Among these additives, there may be mentioned the compounds of formula X - R - SO3H where R represents an aromatic, aliphatic or cycloaliphatic radical, substituted or not, and X represents hydrogen, - SH, - SO3H, - SR1, - SR2 - SO3H where R1 and R2 correspond to the same general definition as R. Furthermore, when R is an aliphatic radical, X can be a heterocycle, such as thiazoline or benzothiazole, or an aminosubstituted group by a heterocycle.
More specifically, the sulfur additives can be chosen from the following compounds: naphthalene sulfonic acid, styrenesulfonic acid, p-sulfobenzaldehyde, B-phenylbenzene sulfonamide, sodium or ammonium saccharinate, benzenesulfinic and propenesulfonic acid, 3- chloro2-hydroxypropanesulfonic, cycloalkanesulfonic acids, alkylnaphthalene sulfonic acids, ethylenesulfonic acid, 2-thioethane- and 3-thiopropanesulfonic acids, 3- (2-thiazolino) propanesulfonic acid, (2-thiazolino) aminoethoxybenzenesulfonic acid, 3- (1-thi -2,3-dihydroxypropyl) propane-sulfonic, 1-chloro-2-hydroxypropanesulfonic acid,
3- (2-benzothiazolo) propane-1-sulfonic acid, 3- [amino- (2-benzo thiazolo) jpropanesufonic acid and other similar compounds.
The concentration of the sulfur additive in the present bath may be between 5 mg / l and 10 g / l, preferably between 1 and 5 g / l.
The hydroxy- or amino acid of the present bath can be chosen from ascorbic, isoascorbic, aspartic, borocitric, citric, glutamic, glutaric, gluconic, glycollic, malic and tartaric acids, and its concentration can be between 5 and 150 g / l.
These acids can be used in the form of their metal salts.
ques, for example alkali or ammonium.
The present bath can, in addition, contain other additives such as, for example, amino, carboxylated or phosphonated chelating agents (in particular ethylenediamine derivatives comprising acetic, hydroxyalkyl or methanephosphonic groups), aliphatic amines (especially hydroxyalkoylamines, hydrazine,
Hydroxylamine, etc.), polyglycols and other brighteners and surfactants commonly present in acidic aurocyanide baths.
Preferably, the acid-functional compounds of the present bath are taken in the form of their ammonium salt.
The present bath may, in addition, contain a third alloy metal, in particular indium, in the form of a water-soluble compound, for example sulfate. The concentration of this metal in the bath is preferably 0.05 to 2 g / l. By co-depositing with the white gold alloy, this metal gives deposits even more ductility.
The gold concentration in the present bath can be between 0.5 and 20 g / l and that of nickel and / or cobalt between 1 and 50 g / l.
The pH of the bath can be between 3 and 6, preferably between 3 and 4.
For the implementation of the present bath, that is to say to obtain therefrom, electrolytic deposits of gold-nickel and orcobalt alloy, containing from 10 to 30% of the common metal alloyed with l gold, in the form of a bright white alloy extremely resistant to wear and corrosion, it is preferred to work under the following conditions: 1-5 A / dm 2, temperature between 25 and 70 "C, current continuous or pulsed.
In summary, the faults of the prior art aimed at obtaining white gold electrolytic deposits which the present invention makes it possible to remedy are the following: low deposition speed, low cathodic yield, deposits afflicted with internal tensions and cracking at thicknesses exceeding 10, u, even 5 t *, defective color (whitish) requiring final coloring (rhodium for example), crystallization forming in the bath at rest, color variation (yellowing) over time, short duration life of the electrolyte, sensitivity of the solution to accidental impurities, low margin of operating conditions.
In fact, the bath of the invention has the following advantages: it provides extremely white deposits which do not absolutely require subsequent coloring and whose color does not vary over time.
These deposits are ductile, even above 20 p in thickness, and allow the production of stable shells by dissolution of the substrate. High deposition rates due to the high permissible current densities and the fact that the evolution of hydrogen has no adverse effect on the gloss, appearance and surface condition of the deposits. These are specular in appearance, without porosity, roughness or pitting, and they have excellent corrosion resistance, great hardness and remarkable resistance to wear.
The use of such alloys is particularly indicated in the following fields: Articles requiring a white coating, unalterable and capable of
be subjected to shocks or mechanical fatigue (bending,
stamping, etc.), including eyewear, or to continuous wear
naked, for example watch cases, lighters, jewelry,
bracelets, pens, etc., generally all items
having to resist wear (friction) and corrosion (sweat, water
sea, corrosive atmospheres).
Industrial articles requiring high resistance to wear
etlou abrasion by friction, in particular contactors,
connectors, plug-in printed circuits, etc.
