CLAIMS I. Apparatus for anaerobic fermentation of organic materials in aqueous dispersion for the production of methane and organic byproducts comprising an oblong fermentation tank, provided with inlet ports for materials to be fermented, for outlet for non-gaseous fluid fermented materials and for outlet from gas, characterized in that the longitudinal axis of the tank is inclined to the horizontal, the angle of inclination being between 25 and 60.
2. Apparatus according to claim 1, characterized in that the angle of inclination is between 30 and 45t.
3. Apparatus according to claim I or 2, characterized in that the tank is of cylindrical shape of revolution.
The present invention relates to an anaerobic fermentation apparatus for organic materials in aqueous dispersion for the production of methane and organic by-products comprising an oblong fermentation tank, provided with inlet ports for materials to be fermented, outlet for fermented materials non-gaseous and gas outlet fluids.
Most of the anaerobic fermentation reactors currently known have the form of vertical or horizontal tanks, or even horizontal tunnels. They are all hermetically sealed, sometimes partially or entirely buried. In a vertical tank, the particles less dense than the liquid phase accumulate at the top of the liquid mass and form there a thick layer or crust which is feared because it can slow down and even stop the operation of the process. Materials denser than the liquid phase, especially earth, sands and entrained inorganic substances, settle on the bottom.
Some installations have evacuation pipes for these deposits, but they frequently become blocked.
The gas bubbles which form in the liquid mass have a long path to travel, which hinders the release and evacuation of the methane produced by the fermentation, all the more since the liquid mass is more viscous, which means that dilute the mass considerably with a concomitant fall in the productivity of the installation.
Known horizontal tank reactors are affected to a lesser extent by the above-mentioned drawbacks but, on the other hand, they do not allow effective separation of the non-gaseous fermentation by-products according to their density. However, such a separation is interesting, because it has been found that the heavy and light materials which are drawn respectively from the lower and upper layers of the fermentation mass have little nutritional value for the soil, but rather constitute an amendment for that -this, while being suitable for retail food thanks to their protein content, while the clear liquid, called supernatant,
which is extracted from the middle layer, contains bacteria useful for the inoculation of fresh materials to ferment, and moreover has good fertilizing properties for vegetation thanks to its nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium content.
The apparatus according to the invention overcomes these drawbacks of reactors with a vertical or horizontal vessel, thanks to the fact that the longitudinal axis of the vessel is inclined to the horizontal, the angle of inclination being between 25 and 60, preferably between 30 and 45.
An embodiment of the invention will be described in more detail, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: FIG. I is a schematic view of an anaerobic fermentation installation comprising the fermentation tank, FIG. 2 is a schematic transverse section of the fermentation tank, taken along the x-y axis of FIG. 1, and fig. 3 is a partial schematic cross-section showing the movements of the liquid in the tank.
As seen in Figs. I and 2, the installation comprises a reactor R in the form of a straight prism with a square base, consisting of a metal tank, of reinforced concrete or of reinforced plastic or other thermally insulating material. The reactor R is mounted on a frame (not shown) so that two opposite longitudinal arztes lie in the same vertical plane, through which also passes the axis of the tank,
and that its longitudinal axis forms with the horizontal an angle x close to 45. A steerable pipe E ′ for admission of fresh materials enters the tank in its middle part and in the vicinity of its upper edge and opens into the tank near the lower edge thereof. A supernatant outlet pipe, also orientable, penetrates into the middle part of the tank in the vicinity of its lower edge and opens into the tank near the upper edge thereof.
The reactor R is also provided with a gas outlet pipe A ', a bottom pipe C' for the exit of the heavy particles which have settled in the zone C and an upper pipe B 'for the exit of the particles light which have accumulated in zone B, at the top of the liquid mass, by flotation. This last pipe B ′ is located downstream of a weir K which extends across the tank and which determines the level reached by the liquid and, consequently, determines the presence of a gas accumulation zone A in the region of the top of the tank from which the gas evacuation pipe A 'starts.
The lines B ', C' and D 'open respectively into drainage basins B ", C" and D "and are provided with valves.
The installation further comprises a tank F 'receiving the fresh materials to ferment F, namely agricultural or industrial waste, waste water, etc., in the form of an aqueous dispersion, the tank F' being connected to the pipe E 'by l 'via a collector F', a pump G, a homogenizer I (which could be omitted) and a heat exchanger H. The latter two devices can be switched off by means of by- pass. The collector F "is also connected to the base of the basins B", C "and D" by means of pipes fitted with valves, for the possible recycling of the products contained in these reservoirs.
The fresh materials are ready in the tank F 'which flows onto the collector F "in which the pump G sucks with or without the addition of liquids stored in the tanks B", C "and D", pump which discharges the substrate, with or without passage through the heat exchanger H and the homogenizer I, through the orientable pipe E 'in an area at the base E of the reactor R. This operation can be done once or twice a day or more, and will be accompanied by an evacuation of fluids of the same volume by the adjustable pipe D 'and / or the fixed pipes B' and C '.
In the interval between these supply operations, the same pump G will recycle one of these liquids, preferably the supernatant coming from line D 'and collected in the reservoir D ", or gas passing through line A" , through the same orientable pipe E 'in the same zone E, with or without passage through H and / or I. This recycling of agiation and heating may be continuous or intermittent. It is also possible to carry out the operations of feeding and recycling in common and continuously by making for example the path DD - D '- D' '- G - H - (I) - E' - E and by proceeding at the same time to a continuous and automatic dosing of F 'in F ".
Fig. 3 shows the direction of the currents from region E of the reactor where the pipe E 'opens. Thanks to the position of the reactor, the available space first expands and then narrows, so that the currents strike the opening and closing faces of the quadrilateral formed by the reactor.
There is therefore not only a strong interaction of the (new) materials or gas bubbles injected on those which already occupy space, but the upward and downward forces of the particles are added to these expansions and contractions and to the inclination of the tank to impart to each solid, liquid or gaseous particle, a three-way movement which creates in the whole mass in fermentation an infinity of interfaces activating the segregation and separation of the particles, as well as their pre-acquired movement and the collection of gas.
The arrangement of the square section on an edge further comprises
the advantage of forming, at the ridge 3 ′, a gas collecting channel and, at the base 3 ″, a channel for the heavy substances in the process of settling.
As seen in fig. 1, between the extreme zones B and C, is a decomposing zone with degressive concentration D between the incoming material and a nucleus of particularly aqueous supernatant DD. The current of gas rising under the ridge of the reactor will push the floating materials towards their outlet B 'from where they can be evacuated separately towards the basin B "for their use. The mud and the other heavy materials can be extracted from the zone C under the hydrostatic pressure of the column of liquid towards the basin C "passing through the line C 'possibly provided with a draining device. The supernatant will be extracted from the zone of greatest liquidity DD using the line D 'towards the basin D ".
Thus, each fluid can be handled separately, measured, observed, analyzed and used according to its specific properties, which also allows prompt detection and correction of accidental changes in the progress of fermentation.
The hydraulic circuit which forms an integral part of the installation described, namely: the supply of the reactor with materials to be fermented, the agitation of the mass in fermentation carried out using a recirculation of fluids and its heating with, as an optional addition, homogenization of the biomass provides bacteria with a finely distributed substrate that is easy to attack, resulting in accelerated fermentation.
The injection into zone E will be done in such a way as to match and amplify the stirring or convection currents governing the fermentation. On the other hand, in order to be able to adapt to particular fermentation conditions and to a possible displacement of the zone DD according to these conditions, the pipes D 'and E' are orientable or flexible and the pipe E 'can have its end provided with a deflector or other distributor device.
In summary, it can be seen that the specific geometry of the reactor and of its internal hydraulic circuits creates, without an internal movable member, an intimate and three-way mixing of the substrate, the reactor being completed by an external and unique hydraulic circuit for agitation, heating, homogenization. and distribution of these materials, acting by recycling any of the fluids present, the combination of these innovations accelerating the fermentation metabolism and facilitating the separation of its products inside the reactor itself, as well as their evacuation and individual control, thus leading to increased efficiency of the installation, to a reduction in its dimensions,
its cost and operating costs and makes possible a visual or automatic control of correct operation and an optimal recovery of the products and by-products of fermentation.
Although the tank described is in the form of an oblong prism with a square base, there are advantages of the inclination of the axis of the tank when the latter has different shapes. The simplest and most economical form of construction is the cylindrical form of revolution, but other forms can be envisaged, such as the shapes with an oval, triangular, parallelepepedic cross section, etc.
Of course, it is necessary to understand by shape of the tank the shape of the internal space, occupied by the materials being treated. The external shape has no effect on the results and can be determined, for example, by a layer of thermal insulation surrounding the tank.
