Hydroformylation (also known as oxo synthesis) is a known method for the preparation of aldehydes from olefinically unsaturated compounds by reaction with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of catalysts. A detailed description of the hydroformylation reaction with a literature review was given by J. Falbe (Syntheses with carbon monoxide, Springer-Verlag, Berlin Heidelberg-New York, 1967).
It has also recently been known that the hydroformylation of certain olefins containing a phenyl radical, namely styrene, α-alkylstyrenes and phenyl vinyl ether, can be directed asymmetrically, so that optically active aldehydes are obtained.
Thus, in Chimia 26, 141 (1972), the asymmetric hydroformylation of styrene and α-methylstyrene in the presence of a cobalt catalyst and an optically active compound [(+) (S) -N- (2-hydroxybenzylidene) -u -methylbenzyl amine, described there as (+) (S) -Na-methylbenzylsalicylaldimine.
The hydroformylation of olefins by means of a catalyst consisting of a platinum dihalide which is complexed to non-chiral phosphines, for example to triphenylphosphine, and SnCl2 is known from German Offenlegungsschrift 2,322,751.
According to the literature cited above, the oxo synthesis is carried out at temperatures of 25 to 125 ° C., pressures of over 7 atmospheres and a CO / H2 ratio of 1:30 and 30: 1.
It has now surprisingly been found that the hydroformylation of olefinically unsaturated prochiral compounds, catalyzed by platinum compounds, can be controlled in such a way that optically active aldehydes are obtained.
The present invention accordingly relates to a process for the platinum compound-catalyzed asymmetric hydroformylation of olefinically unsaturated prochiral compounds, which is characterized in that it is carried out in the presence of an optically active organic compound and SnCl2.
According to the invention, optically active organic compounds which contain an element of main group 5 of the periodic table, especially nitrogen and phosphorus compounds, for example optically active amines, imines, phosphines or phosphites, are preferably used, with phosphines and in particular diphosphino compounds being given special attention.
Suitable diphosphino compounds are, for example, those whose phosphorus atoms are trisubstituted, especially those whose phosphino groups are in 1,4-position to one another and in which preferably at least 2 adjacent carbon atoms connecting the two phosphino groups are members of a carbo- or heterocyclic, saturated or unsaturated one Ring system are, for example, optically active compounds of the formula
EMI1.2
in which the radicals denoted by Rl to R6 are independently hydrogen, C1-alkyl (preferably methyl) or phenyl.
Optically active diphosphino compounds of the general formula I are particularly preferred, in which Rl = R2 = hydrogen or methyl and R3 = R4 = R5 = R6 = phenyl, in particular 4,5-bis- (diphenylphosphinomethyl) -1,3-dioxolane (A) and 2,2-dimethyl4,5-bis (diphenylphosphinomethyl) -1,3-dioxolane (B).
It goes without saying that the asymmetrical Hy
Only those olefinically unsaturated compounds which can form an asymmetric carbon atom through the addition of hydrogen and carbon monoxide (so-called prochiral compounds) are accessible droformylation. So all those compounds are not suitable for an asymmetric hydroformylation whose reacting, olefinically unsaturated carbon atoms already have two identical substituents, ie. H. Compounds of the type (Rl) 2C = C (R2) 2, which include, for example, ethylene itself or cyclohexene.
The olefinic unsaturated, prochiral compounds accessible to asymmetric hydroformylation can be terminal olefins of the types

as about internal olefins of the types

and
EMI2.3
act, where in the formulas II to V R1, R2, R3 and R4 represent groups which can be cyclic and / or acyclic in nature, with the restriction that in the compounds III and V R1 may not be identical to R2. Cyclic groups can optionally be substituted by one or more further radicals and can be saturated or unsaturated, aromatic, alicyclic or heterocyclic; they can be mono- or polycyclic, both condensed and non-condensed systems being possible as the latter.
Acyclic groups can be saturated or unsaturated, straight or branched chain and optionally by one or more functional radicals, especially by oxygen or nitrogen functions, e.g. B. amino groups, in particular amino groups substituted by acyl radicals, be substituted and bound via carbon or heteroatoms. Furthermore, the substituents R1 and R2 or R3 and R4, together with the carbon atom to which they are attached, can represent a cyclic radical which optionally contains one or more heteroatoms and / or can be substituted by hydrocarbon radicals or functional groups.
Finally, however, the substituents R1 and R2 or R1 and R4 or R2 and R3 or R4 together with the two carbon atoms connecting them can form cyclic radicals of the type described above, and in all of these cases the resulting cyclic system must be of this type that in the course of the hydroformylation a center of chirality can arise on at least one of the originally olefinically unsaturated carbon atoms.
Examples of prochiral olefinically unsaturated starting compounds of the formulas II to V suitable for the purposes of the present invention are 1-alkenes such as 1-butene, 1-pentene, 3-methyl-1-butene, 1-heptene, 1-octene, styrene, a- and ss-alkyl styrene such as ce- and ss-methyl or ethyl styrene, allylbenzene, N, N-dialkanoyl-vinylamines such as N, N-diacetyl-vinylamine, N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone, N-vinyl-succinimide, 2 , 6-dimethyl-1,5-heptadiene, 2,6-dimethyl-6-hydroxy-1 -heptene, 2-butene, N-styrylsuccinimide, N-acetyl-styrylamine, N, N-diacetyl-styrylamine or 1-ethyl 2-methyl-1-cyclohexene.
Suitable platinum compounds are the platinum compounds known to be usable from the non-asymmetrically induced hydroformylation of olefinically unsaturated compounds. Above all, hydridotrichlorostannatocarbonylbis (triphenylphosphine) platinum should be mentioned here. In the process according to the invention, platinum compounds, such as. B. PtCl2 or PtBr2 or platinum complexes, such as. B. (PPh3) 2PtCl2 can be used.
While one embodiment of the reaction according to the invention is characterized in that a platinum catalyst which does not contain a chiral ligand and a chiral organic compound are used in the reaction, according to another embodiment, a platinum compound which contains a chiral ligand of the type listed above can first be used, z. B. PtCl2 [(-) - 2,2-dimethyl-4,5-bis- (diphenylphosphinomethyl) -l, 3-diocolane], and these, either alone or preferably in the presence of an excess of the corresponding chiral organic compound, be used in the reaction.
SnCl2 is also added to this platinum complex, expediently in amounts of 1 to 20 mol, based on the Pt complex.
The catalyst concentration, based on the substrate, is within the scope of that customary in normal hydroformylation, for example between 0.01 and 5.0 mol%, preferably between 0.1 and 0.5 mol%.
The separation and recovery of the catalyst, which is particularly important in the industrial application of the oxo process, can be carried out in a manner known per se.
Suitable solvents or diluents for the hydroformylation reaction according to the invention are all compounds which are known to be usable in the customary process, i.e. aliphatic, cycloaliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, aliphatic, cyclic and aromatic ethers, aliphatic alcohols, nitriles, carboxylic anhydrides, ketones, esters, lactones , Lactams, orthoesters and water. As is often the case, the reaction product itself or a high-boiling residue can be recycled and used as a diluent.
The low temperatures used in connection with the present invention can be between 0 and 200 ° C., preferably in the range from 30 to 150 ° C., the most favorable temperature in the individual case depending on the compound to be hydroformylated and on the other reaction parameters, such as the CO - and H2 partial pressure or the type of catalyst.
The partial pressure of the carbon monoxide is not essential; it is expediently 20 to 400 at.
The size of the H2 partial pressure is not of decisive influence; it can be greater or less than the CO partial pressure.
According to the process of the invention, particularly good optical yields can be achieved by hydroformylation of 1,1-disubstituted olefins (vinylidene compounds).
Surprisingly, this is in contrast to hydroformylation with the aid of rhodium complex catalysts.
The optically active aldehydes obtainable according to the invention are either themselves valuable end products or can be converted into valuable, optically active alcohols or acids, for example by reduction or oxidation.
The following examples illustrate the invention. All
Temperatures are given in degrees Celsius.

The procedure was as in Example 1, except that 5.6 g of 2-ethyl-1-hexene were used. After a reaction time of 20 hours, 3-ethylheptanal and small amounts (3%) of 3-ethylheptanol were achieved with 80% conversion. The aldehyde showed aD25 (1 = 1) +0.030.
Example 5
Hydroformylation of α-ethyl styrene
5.2 g of a-ethylstyrene, 10 ml of benzene, 0.100 g of (DIOP) PtCl2 and 0.146 g of SnCl2 2H2O were used in a 100 ml glass insert under N2. The glass insert was then closed in a shaking autoclave and compressed under 200 atm of an equimolecular mixture of H2XO. The mixture was heated to 1000 ° C. for 5 hours with shaking. 3-phenylpentanal was obtained with a 100% conversion). To determine the optical activity, the aldehyde was oxidized to the corresponding acid using the usual method with AgNO3.
The 3-phenylpentanoic acid had aD25 (1 = 1) +6.520.
Example 6
Hydroformylation of 2,3,3-trimethyl-1-butene
The procedure was as in Example 5, except that 4.0 g of 2,3,3-trimethyl-1-butene were used. After a reaction time of 22 hours, a mixture of 66 was obtained with a conversion of 97%
3,4,5-trimethylpentanal and 34% 3,4,5-trimethylpentanol.
To determine the optical activity, the aldehyde was oxidized to the corresponding acid by AgNO3. The 3,4,4
Trimethylpentanoic acid had aD25 (1 = 1) +0.046 (C = 3.004 in
Chloroform).
Example 7
Hydroformylation of 2,3-dimethyl-1-butene
The procedure was as in Example 5, except that 4.2 g of 2,3-dimethyl-1-butene were used. After a reaction time of 64 hours, a mixture of 95% was obtained
38% 3,4-dimethylpentanal and 62% 3,4-dimethylpentanol.
To determine the optical activity, the mixture was reduced with LiAlH4. The 3,4-dimethylpentanol obtained by distillation showed aD25 (1 = 1) +2.212.
Example 8
Hydroformylation of 1-butene
A mixture of 8 g of butene-1, 10 ml of m-xylene, 0.100 g (DIOP) PtCl2 and 0.140 g SnCl2 2H2O was in a
150 ml oil bath autoclave made of stainless steel heated to 100 C for 4.5 hours under a pressure of 82 atm of an equimolecular mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. A mixture of 73% n-pentanal and 27% 2-methylbutanal was obtained with a conversion of 50%. The 2-methylbutanal, which had aD25 (1 = 1) +0.210, was isolated by conventional fractional distillation.
Example 9
Hydroformylation of cis-butene
As in Example 8, 8 g of cis-butene were reacted. To
A reaction time of 17 hours gave a mixture of 32% n-pentanal and 68% 2-methylbutanal with a conversion of 25%. The latter had aD25 (1 = 1) +0.337.
Example 10
Hydroformylation of trans-butene
As in Example 8, 8 g of trans-butene were reacted. After a reaction time of 21.5 hours, a mixture of 24% n-pentanal and 70% 2-methylbutanal, which had aD25 (1 = 1) +0.325, was obtained with a conversion of 20%.
