PATENTANSPRÜCHE
Beispiel I

PATENT CLAIMS
1. Device for the continuous application of a sheet or web material continuously passing through the same with a liquid reaction formed by combining chemically reacting components with one another, with a feed device for the reaction mixture, which has a transverse to the direction of flow of the sheet or web material over the entire working width of the device comprises carriage (14) which can be set in reciprocating motion and on which at least one distributor (10, 11) for the reaction mixture is mounted, characterized in that at least one stationary mixing head (8, 9) that can be charged with the chemically reacting components is present and each manifold (10, 11) is connected to such a mixing head.
2. Device according to claim 1, characterized in that each distributor (10, 11) is designed as a fan-shaped spray can and is pivotably mounted on the carriage (14) above the passage for the sheet or web material.
The invention relates to a device for the continuous application of a sheet or web material continuously passing through the same with a liquid reaction mixture formed by combining chemically reacting components, with a feed device for the reaction mixture, which has a transverse to the direction of flow of the sheet or web material over the entire Includes working width of the device in reciprocating motion displaceable carriage on which at least one distributor for the reaction mixture is mounted.
In the manufacture of flexible foam-backed carpets, it is known to apply polyurethane foam-forming chemicals from a feeder to the back of a continuous length of carpet.
This device includes a mixing head and manifold, such as a spray tube and nozzle, and is mounted on a trolley which traverses the carpet in a reciprocating motion as the carpet is advanced under the feeder. The considerable weight of the reciprocating parts, which is largely due to the mixing head and its contents, limits the traverse speed and thereby also the throughput and / or the width of the carpet to be provided with an underlayer.
It has now been found that this limitation can be avoided by only carrying the distributor on the trolley and connecting the distributor to a stationary mixing head. Surprisingly, the use of long, flexible tubes connecting the stationary mixing head to the reciprocating manifold does not adversely affect the operation of the machine or the quality of the foam pad.
The subject matter of the invention is therefore a device of the type described at the outset, the features of which emerge from claim 1.
The device is particularly suitable for the continuous application of a polyurethane foam-forming reaction mixture to continuous lengths of a sheet or
Sheet material, e.g. a thermoplastic sheet material, a felt or linen or cotton fabric. However, it is very particularly suitable for laying reaction mixtures, which form a flexible polyurethane foam, on semi-continuous lengths of floor coverings in order to produce carpets with foam backing.
With the invention it is now possible to lay 4 to 5.5 m wide carpets under with foam at a speed of 3 to 6 m / min using a single spray head.
The desired thickness of the foam underlay is usually 3 to 4 mm, which requires in the order of magnitude of 600 to 800 g of polyurethane foam-forming mixture per m2. For the respective widths of the carpet used and the throughputs used, the feed device must therefore separate the foam mixture in quantities of 5 to 30 kg / min. Since the commonly available mixing heads can process a maximum of 12 kg of foam components per minute, at least 1 to 3 mixing heads with the appropriate distributors are used.
When reference is made herein to the weight of the polyurethane foam-forming components, that term is not intended to include the weight of any fillers that may be added.
The manifold or manifolds can be conventional spray nozzles. They are usually designed as fan-shaped spray nozzles which are inclined in the direction of sheet or web material flow above the flow path.
A conventional fan-shaped nozzle, which is arranged 30 cm above the carpet, can deposit the foam mixture over a 50 to 60 cm wide belt. If two or more nozzles are used, then they are expediently arranged in a line parallel to the direction of movement of the carpet and separated from one another by a distance of 50 to 60 cm. The nozzles are preferably pivotably mounted on the carriage so that the extent to which the sprays are superimposed can be regulated in order to minimize the formation of burrs between the foam strips.
In order to obtain a foam-backed carpet with the desired properties and the desired final state, it is preferable to apply the foam mixture in at least eight separate operations so that the spray nozzle traverses each belt unit width of the carpet at least eight times.
The to-and-fro trolley naturally runs at high speed, the exact speed being i.a. depends on the width and throughput of the carpet and, of course, on the number of nozzles attached to the car. Since, according to the invention, it is not necessary for the mixing head or the mixing heads to be movable on the carriage, it is possible to use carriages which are operated by conventional mechanisms at speeds of up to 250 m / min. Appropriately, the carriage alternately slows down and accelerates again to a constant speed in the opposite direction in a range of 5 cm.
The distributor or distributors are normally connected to the mixing heads by means of a flexible pipe which has a bore that is large enough to allow the desired amount of the foam-forming components to pass through.
A helically wound nylon tube is suitable for this, which can be pulled out to at least 3 m for carpets up to 5.5 m wide if the mixing head is arranged centrally above the moving carpet. A tube with a bore of 12 mm is sufficient to supply a mixture for a flexible foam at a rate of 8 kg / min.
The liquid mixture can be any mixture of reactive chemicals. In the case of foam-forming mixtures for carpet underlays, the mixture contains those components that are already relevant to the production
of flexible polyurethane foams have been described. The main components of such mixtures are an organic polyisocyanate, a polyether or polyester polyol with a hydroxyl number of 30 to 100, preferably 30 to 70, and water as a blowing agent. In addition, the reaction mixture usually contains one or more catalysts and surface-active agents and optionally other auxiliaries, e.g. Fillers, flame retardants and other blowing agents such as e.g. Trichlorofluoromethane. Suitable polyisocyanates are e.g. Tolylene diisocyanate and diphenylmethane diisocyanate, each of which can be either in substantially pure or crude form or as a mixture of such isocyanates. Suitable polyols are e.g. Poly ether diols and triols derived from propylene oxide or from propylene and ethylene oxide.
Suitable catalysts are e.g. organic tin compounds and tertiary amines.
In the manufacture of foam-backed carpets, it is important that the liquid mixture partially penetrates the burlap or other base sheet so that it bonds effectively with the carpet as it cures and increases the stability of the carpet structure. However, it is also important that the penetration not be so strong that the front of the carpet is warped. The degree of penetration can be controlled by measuring the reactivity of the liquid mixture, e.g. controlled by adjusting the amount of catalyst.
The invention is explained in more detail below with reference to the drawing. This represents a perspective view of a carpet underlay machine known per se, so that a description of the parts not essential to the invention is dispensed with.
The metering device, denoted by 1, of the illustrated device contains two sets of coating vessels for different polyurethane foam-forming reaction mixtures, e.g. Polyol vessels 2 and 3, catalyst vessels 4 and 5 and isocyanate vessels 6 and 7. The two sets of vessels are connected via lines not designated to two separate stationary mixing heads 8 and 9, which in turn each have a flexible line 12, 13 with separate distributors or spray nozzles 10 and 11 are connected. The spray nozzles 10 and 11 are mounted by extension arms 15 and 16 on a carriage 14 which is arranged displaceably on a rail 17 of the device which extends transversely to the direction of movement of a carpet web 18.
In operation, the carriage 14 and the spray nozzles 10 and 11, which emit different foam-forming reaction mixtures, cross the carpet web 18 in a reciprocating motion, while the web 18 continuously moves forward in the direction shown by the arrow. The foam-forming mixture supplied through the nozzle 10 is formulated so that the desired degree of penetration into the carpet underlay is obtained, while the foam-forming mixture supplied through the nozzle 11 is formulated so that a foam layer with low density and low permanent deformation is obtained. The foam layer deposited by the nozzle 10 is thus sprayed over by the foam from the nozzle 11.
The nozzles 10 and 11 are pivotably arranged on their respective arms 15 and 16 in such a way that the degree of overlap between the two spray tracks can be adjusted by varying the spray direction. Furthermore, the distance between the nozzles and the rail can be adjusted in order to vary the spray pattern.
Details of the device described can be varied within the scope of the invention. Various auxiliary devices are not shown, which are normally used for such foam underlay.
directions are present. Such facilities are e.g.
Drain troughs on each side of the carpet to collect reaction mixture sprayed over the web edge, infrared preheaters to heat the web material prior to foam application, and post heaters to accelerate curing of the reaction mixture after application.
The use of the device according to the invention is further illustrated by examples.
Example I.
The device was operated with a single mixing head 8 or 9 'and a single spray nozzle 10 or 11. 80 parts by weight of an oxypropylated, oxyethylated glycerin with an average molecular weight of 3500, 20 parts by weight of an oxypropylated, oxyethylated glycerin with an average molecular weight of 5200, 3.1 parts by weight of water, 0.4 parts by weight of diazobicyclooctane, 0.7 parts by weight of a polysiloxane-polyoxyalkylene Copolymers, 1.0 part by weight of carbon black, dispersed in trixyl phosphate, 0.4 part by weight of tin (II) octoate and 39.5 parts of a mixture of 2,4- and 2,6-toluene diisocyanate in a ratio of 80:20 were used with a rotor high shear, rotating at 4000 revolutions per minute, mixed in a conventional cylindrical mixing chamber with an effective volume of 400 cm: '.
The resulting mixture was passed at a rate of 8 kg / min through a 5.6 m long flexible nylon tube with a 12 mm bore to a spray nozzle which gave a fan-shaped distribution pattern. A controlled stream of air at a pressure of 9 atm was introduced into the liquid stream at a point near the spray nozzle in order to assist and control the atomization of the sprayed liquid.
The spray nozzle moved back and forth across the back of the carpet at a linear speed of 235 m / min. The carpet was moved under the vertically reciprocating spray nozzle at a speed of 3.1 m / min. The sprayed back of the carpet was heated from above with a series of infrared heaters to allow adequate expansion and curing of the foam. The resulting distribution of the foam mixture on the back of the pretreated carpet resulted in a uniform application of reaction mixture with sufficient penetration into the underlying fibers, so that a satisfactory tuft fixation and a foam layer with a thickness between 3.0 and 3.5 mm with an abrasion-resistant outer skin were obtained has been. The width of the coated carpet was 4.2 m.
Example 2
In this example two mixing heads and two spray nozzles were used. The mixture according to Example 1 was metered in through the first mixing head, but with the omission of soot, in an amount of 8 kg / min. The conditions were the same in all respects, with the exception that the width of the coated carpet was 5.1 m and that the carpet was moved under the spray nozzles at a speed of 5.8 m / min.
The mixture introduced into the second mixing head in an amount of 10 kg / min contained 100 parts by weight of an oxypropylated, oxyethylated glycerol with an average molecular weight of 3500, 4.0 parts by weight of water, 0.3 part by weight of diazobicyclooctane, 0.7 part by weight of a polysiloxane-polyoxyalkylene Copolymers, 1.0 part by weight of carbon black, dispersed in trixylyl phosphate, 0.4 part by weight of tin (II) octoate and 49.5 parts by weight of a mixture of 2,4- and 2,6-toluene diisocyanate in a ratio of 80:20. Both the mixed - and the spray devices were similar to example 1. The second spray nozzle was moved back and forth across the carpet at a distance of 60 cm from the first spray nozzle.
The carpet was then passed under a bank of infrared heaters. The resulting foam pad was about 3.5 cm thick and had satisfactory tuft fixation and an abrasion-resistant skin
