- la fig. 1 représente un diagramme de phase d'une composition à base de cristaux Np-liquides suivant l'invention, constituée par un mélange d'une composition à base de cristaux Nnliquides (Composition a) obtenue en mélangeant des parties égales, en poids, de p-méthoxy-p'-n-butylazoxybenzène, de pméthoxy-p'-n-hexylazoxybenzène, de p-méthoxy-p'-n-octylazoxybenzène et de p-éthoxy-p'-n-butylazoxybenzène avec du p-n-butyl-p'-cyanoazoxybenzène;

The present invention relates to a composition based on liquid nematic crystals having a positive dielectric anisotropy.
Liquid nematic crystals or compositions based on liquid nematic crystals (hereinafter referred to as N-liquid crystals or N-liquid crystal compositions) are used in electro-optical devices using the phenomenon that their optical properties are changed by the application of an electric field. The electro-optical display devices using the N-liquid crystal material can be divided into two groups, depending on the dielectric anizotropy of the N-liquid crystal used.
One group includes devices in which a dynamic scattering mode (MDD) is used, that is, an optical scattering phenomenon caused by the collision of an ion and an N-liquid crystal domain when an electric field is applied to an N-liquid crystal having, in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axes of the molecules, a dielectric constant greater than the dielectric constant in the longitudinal direction, that is to say a liquid nematic crystal having a negative dielectric anisotropy (hereinafter called Nn-liquid crystal).
Another group includes devices in which an electric field effect mode (ECM) is used, that is, a change in bending or twisting of N-liquid crystal molecules caused by the application of a electric field on an N-liquid crystal having a dielectric constant, in a longitudinal direction of the molecules, greater than that in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axes of the molecules, that is, a liquid nematic crystal having a positive dielectric anisotropy (hereinafter referred to as Np-liquid crystal). Many of the latest MEC-type devices are referred to as torsion-effect type display devices (hereinafter referred to as TN-type display devices) in which a modification of the torsion of the molecules (one of the modes to be used) is used. electric field effect).
The composition based on Npliquid crystals according to the invention can be used for the TN type display device.
The invention relates in particular to a novel composition based on Np-liquid crystals which can be used in a TN-type display device, and a novel composition based on Np-liquid crystals for a TN-type display device which has the crystal phase. Liquid nematics over a wide temperature range, including ambient temperature.
The composition according to the invention, exhibiting a wide range of mesomorphism, passing through room temperature, is characterized in that it consists of a mixture of (A) at least one p-n-alkyl-p'-cyanoazoxybenzene of formula:
EMI1.3
in which R represents an n-butyl, n-pentyl, nhexyl, n-heptyl or n-octyl radical, and of (C) at least one azoxy compound corresponding to the formula:
EMI1.4
wherein any one of the radicals R3 and R4 represents an n-alkyl group of 1 to 8 carbon atoms and the other an n-alkoxy group of 1 to 8 carbon atoms, the two components A and C being present in a weight ratio of 0.05 = 'A / A + C <1.
In the appended drawing, given by way of example:
- fig. 1 represents a phase diagram of a composition based on Np-liquid crystals according to the invention, consisting of a mixture of a composition based on Nnliquid crystals (Composition a) obtained by mixing equal parts, by weight, of p-methoxy-p'-n-butylazoxybenzene, p-methoxy-p'-n-hexylazoxybenzene, p-methoxy-p'-n-octylazoxybenzene and p-ethoxy-p'-n-butylazoxybenzene with pn-butyl- p'-cyanoazoxybenzene;
- fig. 2 represents a phase diagram of a composition based on Np-liquid crystals according to the invention, consisting of a mixture of said compound a and p-n-hexyl-p'-cya noazoxybenzene.
Both compounds of formula I and compounds of formula III were already known (Japanese Patent Application 7,459,087, publicly available). In addition, the compounds of formula I are described in French patent application no. 7,514,173. The compositions obtained from them can be used as NP-liquid crystals for a TN type display device. However, the mesomorphism ranges of these Np-liquid crystals are at an elevated temperature, much higher than room temperature, as shown in Tables 1 and 2. It has been found that a wider mesomorphism range can be obtained through room temperature, by mixing at least one of the components
sés of formula I with at least one azoxy compound of formula
III and that the compounds of formula I are well miscible with the compounds of formula III.
Azoxy compounds of formula II are well known Npliquid crystals. The CN and NI points of representative azoxy-type compounds are reported in Table 1.

Among the compositions based on Nn-liquid crystals according to the invention,
compositions based on Nn-liquid crystals
obtained by mixing p-methoxy-p'-n-butylazoxybenzene, p-methoxy-p'-n-hexylazoxybenzene and p-methoxyp'-n-octylazoxybenzene have a lower CN point due to the lowering of the point of freezing and, therefore, exhibit a wide range of mesomorphism passing through room temperature.
For example, a composition obtained by mixing the above three azoxy compounds in equal parts by weight has a mesomorphism range of -6 to 79OC. Likewise, a composition obtained by mixing p-methoxy-p '-n-butylazoxybenzene, p-methoxy-p' -n-hexyl-azoxybenzene, p-methoxy-p'-n-octylazoxybenzene and p-ethoxy -p'-n-butylazoxybenzene in appropriate proportions exhibits a low CN point due to the lowering of the freezing point and exhibits a wide range of mesomorphism passing through room temperature.
For example, a composition obtained by mixing the above four azoxy compounds in equal parts, by weight, has a mesomorphism range of -8 to 81C. The compositions based on Npliquid crystals according to the invention obtained by mixing an appropriate amount of at least one pn-alkyl-p'-cyanoazoxybenzene with a composition based on Nn-liquid crystals consisting of the three aforementioned azoxy compounds or of the four aforementioned azoxy compounds, exhibits a wide range of mesomorphism passing through room temperature and, therefore, are Np-liquid crystals usable for the TN type display device.
According to the invention, the compounds of formula (I) or their mixtures serve to impart positive dielectric anisotropy to mixtures containing the Nn-liquid crystals and, therefore, can be referred to as agents imparting positive dielectric anisotropy. In the compositions based on Np-liquid crystals consisting of a mixture of pn-alkylp'-cyanoazoxybenzene (s) and Np-liquid crystals of azoxy compound, the pn-alkyl-p'-cyanoazoxybenzene (s) doi (fr) t be added in a proportion by weight of not less than 5%. If the proportion by weight is less than 5%, compositions based on N-liquid crystals having a positive dielectric anisotropy cannot be obtained.
The p-n-alkyl-p'-cyanoazoxybenzenes have a higher temperature range than the azoxy compounds. Consequently, the mesomorphism ranges of Np-liquid crystal compositions shift to higher temperature ranges as the proportion of p-n-alkylp'-cyanoazoxybenzenes increases. Therefore, it is preferable that the proportion of pn-alkyl-p'-cyanoazoxybenzene (s) in the compositions based on Np-liquid crystals is not more than 30% by weight, and more preferably not more than. 20% by weight.
The following examples are given by way of illustration of the invention.
Example 1
