Abstract

A controlled deflection roll comprises a tubular roll shell mounted on a stationary support with movable hydrostatic pressure pistons located between the shell and support. The pistons include a contact surface for supporting the shell and flat side surfaces. U-shaped connection elements are provided for connecting neighbouring pistons. Each element has resilient flaps which bear against the flat side surfaces of \-2, neighbouring pistons. The side surfaces of neighbouring pistons are located in a common plane. The individual pistons can be shifted into posn. independently of one another. The connection elements do not require attachment or supporting at the support. The individual pistons may be accurately positioned with respect to the support and roll shell. The provision of hydrostatic pressure at the bearing surface of the pistons prevents undesirable metal : metal contact.
