x
a+
100
EMI1.2
Quand on passe à l'infini, I'expression tend vers:
100 x a+---x-(1)
100-r 100
En prenant
r= 40%
un alliage inoculant dont la composition (FeA1Ca) est exempte de Si;
A cet effet, conformément à
vol. 9, p. 199, fig.

The present invention relates to a gray cast iron, with lamellar graphite, with high mechanical strength and low ledeburitic hardening, comprising from 2 to 4% of carbon, from I to 3% of aluminum and from 0.3% to 2% of an alloy. inoculant.
A gray cast iron, with lamellar graphite, with high mechanical strength and low ledeburitic hardening of an inoculating alloy is described in Belgian patent N 710679 in the name of the applicant.
According to this prior patent, inoculant rallying comprises, as active inoculant element, an element selected from the group comprising Ca, Ba, Sr.
A first disadvantage of calcium-based alloys is that they cause the formation of a massive amount of reaction slag. These slags remain in suspension in the liquid cast iron and by difference in density slowly rise towards
the surface of the bath. It is essential to clean the bath before pouring, but even after slagging, slag re-forms on the surface. It is not possible to wait long enough to completely scour the cast iron, since it cools too much in the ladle. As a result, a certain amount of slag is always entrained in the mold during casting.
To prevent this slag from entering the part, dirt traps must be provided in the pouring channel, which complicates the pouring system.
A second drawback of calcium-based alloys is that calcium-based alloys, common in industry, contain too much silicon; however, the cast iron to which the present invention relates, the characteristics of which are high mechanical strength and low hardness, must have, after inoculation, a silicon content of less than 1% and preferably of 0.75%.
This silicon limitation poses problems during industrial manufacture where account must be taken of the accumulation of the silicon content in the charges by reuse of returns.
Indeed, let us admit that the scrap contains a% silicon and the rinoculant x% silicon; by inoculating with 1% alloy, the silicon content for the first melting will be:
x
a +
100
Using r% returns, the second charge will be made up of:
(100-r) of grapeshot and r returns.
The silicon content of the second fusion is:
EMI1.1
Continuing this reasoning, we find for the umpteenth fusion, the silicon content equal to:
EMI1.2
When we go to infinity, the expression tends towards:
100 x a + --- x- (1)
100-r 100
Taking
r = 40%
a = 0.3% (normal Si content in steel scrap)
x = 66% (case of SiCa which is common inoculant rallying in
rindustrie) it is found that the limit silicon content of the cast iron will be equal to 1.40%.
The use of SiCa is therefore practically excluded for the industrial production of aluminum casting. From formula (1) it is deduced that the limiting silicon content in the cast iron will remain less than 0.75% if the silicon content of the inoculant does not exceed 27%. However, there is no industrial alloy containing sufficient
of calcium with a silicon content of less than 27%.
For the industrial production of aluminum cast irons, a
alloy, the composition of which is given below, was produced
especially: Fe = 30%; Ca = 15%: Si = 25%; Al = 30%.
Since this alloy is not produced in large quantities,
the cost price is very high.
In the earlier patent in the name of the proprietor cited
an inoculating alloy whose composition (FeA1Ca) is free of Si;
it is however an alloy obtained in the laboratory, of which robten-
industrialization cannot be considered because of the prohibitive cost that the elimination of Si would entail.
The object of the present invention is a gray cast iron, with graphite
lamellar, with high mechanical resistance and low ledeburitic, which
aims to remedy the drawbacks due to inoculating alloys
mentioned above, by proposing inoculating alloys
of another type, which facilitate the casting and achieve
saving the cost of the alloy. For this purpose, in accordance with
the invention, the inoculating alloy contains, as an inoculating element
active, 5 to 75% rare earths.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the inoculating alloy contains 20 to 70% rare earths.
The active inoculant consists of one or, more generally,
several rare earths, as is well known to specialists.
Generally, the active inoculant is constituted by well-known rallying
under the name mischmetal which contains about 50% of
cerium and around 50% of other rare earths such as lanthanum,
neodymium, praseodymium.
It is significant, to demonstrate interest of the present
invention, to mention as has been described in an article
by Dawson, published in BCIRA Journal of Research 1961,
flight. 9, p. 199, fig. 7, that an addition exceeding 0.1% of mischmetal
to silicon iron, which corresponds to an addition of
0.05% cerium in the cast iron results in that instead
of gray cast iron, a total white quenching of the cast iron is obtained.
It will be seen in the examples given below, of implementation
of the invention, and in particular in Example 5, that when
is the aluminum casting referred to in this
invention, an increasing addition of up to 1.5% mischmetal,
which corresponds to an addition of 0.56% of cerium in the iron,
has the result of reducing the quenching depth.
Other details and peculiarities of Invention will emerge
examples of gray castings with aluminum, inoculated conformed
ment to the invention, given below.
Each example includes a table of characteristics of the
cast according to the percentage of inoculating alloy. As a compa
reason, ron indicated the characteristics of the same font,
but inoculated with 1% SiCa, the Ca content being 33%.
As a further comparison, it has been indicated in the
column 5, (HB cast iron Si), the normal Brinell hardness (HB) of a
gray cast iron with silicon, the tensile strength of which corresponds
to that of the cast iron according to the invention, tensile strength
given in column 3. The Brinell hardness given in column 5 was
calculated according to the classical formula: HB = 100 + 4.3a
s: tensile strength.

The examples show that it is desirable to use an inoculating alloy whose active element represents between approximately 20% (22% in the examples) and approximately 70% (66% in the examples) by weight of alloy.
It is then possible to be satisfied with using 0.3 to 0.8% by weight of inoculating alloy to obtain very satisfactory characteristics of the cast iron, with regard to the three aspects examined: low ledeburitic quenching, high resistance to melting. traction, not too high hardness.
The tables also demonstrate (col. 3 and 5) that the aluminum castings inoculated with a rare earth-based alloy are appreciably less hard, with equal strength, than the conventional silicon castings.
It should be understood that the invention is not limited to the examples described and that many variations can be made thereto without departing from the scope of the present patent. This is how other inoculating alloys such as Al (TR), Cu (TR), CuSi (TR),
Ni (TR) and NiSi (TR) can be used.
