EMI1.2
On a agité 3 h à 5-10"C, puis 3 h encore à température ambiante (20-30 C).

0,05 Torr contenant le composé (I) cis-.
Exemple 4

Exemple 6
On a agité 3 h à 5-10"C puis encore 3 h à température ambiante (20-30DC).

The present invention relates to a tricyclic hydrocarbon 1,2,6-trimethyltricyclo [5,3,2,02.7] dodéca-S-ene of formula (I) below,
EMI1.1
comprising, as isomers, forms analogous to those of cis- and trans-decalin and a process for its preparation.
This compound is useful, in its isomeric forms, as an intermediate in the manufacture of perfumes.
In the following, the term compound (I) denotes any isomeric form of 1,2,6-trimethyltricyclo [5,3,2,02.7] -dodeca-5-ene unless a particular isomeric form is specifically mentioned.
According to the present invention, the process for preparing 1.2.6-trimethyltricyclo [5,3,2,02-7] -dodéca-5-ene is characterized in that the trimethylcyclododéca-1,5,9- is subjected to triene (referred to as TMCDT in the following) to an intramolecular cyclization reaction using an acid catalyst in the presence or absence of a solvent, 1,5,9 trimethyltricyclododeca- 1, 5,9-triene ( hereinafter referred to as 1,5,9
TMCDT) giving, under these conditions, a 1,2,6-trimethyltri cyclo [5,3.2, 027] -dodéca-5-ene in accordance with the cis- form of decalin (hereinafter called compound (I) cis) and 1,5,10-trimethylcyclododéca-1,5,9-triene (hereinafter called 1,5,10-TMCDT) giving, under these conditions,
a 1,2,6-trimethyltri cyclo [5,3,2ss-7] -dodeca-5-ene conforming to the trans- form of decalin (called, in the following, compound (I) trans).
The accompanying drawing illustrates the invention.

Fig. 8 shows the stereochemical structure of an oxime compound of a ketone prepared by epoxidation of compound (I) followed by isomerization.
Compound (I), prepared according to the present process, is a sesquiterpene hydrocarbon of crude formula C15H24, of which
the structure corresponds to the following formula (I):
EMI1.2
TMCDT, the starting material of the present process, can be prepared by cyclic trimerization of isoprene. The product of such isomerization rarely corresponds to a single isomer, but rather to a mixture of 1,5,9-TMCDT and 1,5,10-TMCDT. The course of this reaction is therefore different from that of the cyclic trimerization of butadiene.
It is now known that the dominant fraction of commercial TMCDT consists of 1,5,1 O-trimethylcyclododeca- 1,5,9-triene (which can also be called 1,6,9-trimethylcyclododéca 1,5.9-triene); it is this substance which is used as the starting material for the synthesis of compound (I) according to the present process. Even when selective cyclic trimerization is carried out to obtain 1,5,9-TMCDT, the starting material for preparing cis-compound (I), inevitably a certain amount of 1,5,10 is obtained.
TMCDT. Thus, to obtain pure 1,5,9-TMCDT from the mixture of isomers, one has to resort to crystallization from ethanol. The 1,5,10-TMCDT is then found in the crystallization solvent.
The crystals of 1,5,9-TMCDT thus obtained have a m.p. = 91-92 C and they are used, according to the present process, to prepare the compound (I) cis. In addition, the 1,5,10-TMCDT remaining in the solvent can be purified and used as a starting material to prepare, according to the present process, the compound (I) trans. It will also be noted, following the reference example below, that when the cyclic trimerization of isoprene is carried out in the presence of a nickel-based catalyst, the reaction product reveals a peak during analysis by gas chromatography.
However, when this product was cooled to -20 ° C, crystals formed which, after separation and recrystallization, turned out to be 1,5,9-TMCDT, while the filtrate contained the
1,5,10-TMCDT. Thus it is seen from the above how one can obtain the starting materials necessary for the preparation of the isomers of compound (I).
Among the cis- and trans- stereoisomers resulting from the existence of the double bonds of TMCDT, it is possible to use, without particular difficulties, both trans-, trans-, trans
TMCDT than cis-, trans-, trans-TMCDT. However, it is preferred to use trans-, trans-, trans-1,5,10-TMCDT to prepare compound (I) trans.
As acid catalysts which may be suitable for the present process, there may be mentioned (1) strong acids such as, for example, sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, polyphosphoric acid, benzenesulfonic acid, p-toluene acid -sulfonate, etc., (2) strongly acidic ion exchange resins such as, for example, Amberlite 15, Amberlite IR-120 (trade names, manufactured by Rohm & Haas Co., Ltd.), Dowex 50
(registered name, manufactured by Dow Chemical Co., Ltd.), etc., and
(3) Lewis acids such as boron trifluoride, tin tetrachloride, aluminum trichloride, titanium tetrachloride, etc.
The amount of catalyst to be used can vary between widely separated limits, for example from 0.01 to 0.1 parts by weight of catalyst per part by weight of the starting TMCDT; however, it is preferred to use from 0.05 to 0.2 parts by weight of catalyst per part by weight of the
Starting TMCDT.
The intramolecular cyclization of the present process can be carried out in the absence of a solvent; however, this can be better controlled in the presence of a solvent. Among the solvents suitable for said reaction, mention may be made of lower carboxylic acids, such as HCOOH, CH3-COOH, etc., lower alcohols such as CH30H, C2HsOH, etc., halogenated hydrocarbons such as CH2Cl2, CHCl3, Cl14 , etc., and aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene, n-hexane, etc.
As a solvent for ensuring a homogeneous reaction mixture of TMCDT with the acid catalyst, it is preferred to use a mixture comprising a lower fatty acid and a halogenated hydrocarbon. As such mixtures of solvents, mention may be made of the mixture HCOOH-CH2Cl2, CH2-COOH-CC14, etc. The ratio of the components of such mixtures can vary widely; however, it is preferred to use 1.5 to 2 volumes of the lower fatty acid per volume of the halogenated hydrocarbon.
The amount of solvent to be used in carrying out the reaction is dictated by the need to achieve a homogeneous reaction mixture. Generally an amount of 2 to 4 volumes of solvent per volume of TMCDT is suitable.
The present reaction can generally be carried out under good conditions of efficiency between 0 and 100oC; however, it is preferred to operate between 30 and 400C. However, when the operation is carried out in a homogeneous medium such as the mixture of HCOOH and CH2Cl2 in Example 1 below, and in the presence of H2SO4 as catalyst, the best results are obtained at a temperature of 5-10oC.
The reaction time is generally about 5 hours, however, the performance can be improved by letting it run long enough rather than trying to finish it after a short time. In addition, to improve the reaction contact between the 'rMCDT, the solvent and the acid catalyst, it will be advantageous, according to the above conditions, to operate in a vessel equipped with a stirrer. When the reaction is complete, the solvent is recovered by distillation under reduced pressure, the acid is neutralized and the neutralization products are separated by washing.
The residue is then dried, for example by means of Na2SO4 anh., Etc., then it is distilled under vacuum at 75-800C / 0.05 Torr, which gives the compound (I), the compound (I ) cis being obtained with a theoretical yield of 80% or more, and compound (I) trans with a theoretical yield of 30% or more.
By oxidation, the compound (I), which constitutes an important intermediate in the manufacture of perfume products, can be converted into a fragrant product exhibiting an excellent woody-amber odor. Thus, by treating the compound (I) with a peracid, as described in the Swiss patent
No. 590,858, an epoxy compound is obtained which can be used as a perfume ingredient. Further, when this epoxidized compound is isomerized with a Lewis acid, as described in Swiss Patent No. 590,808, a ketone having an excellent amber odor is obtained.
The present invention is illustrated in detail by the following examples and the reference example below. Unless otherwise indicated, all ratios, percentages and parts mentioned are by weight.
Reference example
Synthesis of 1,5,9-TMCDT and 1,5,10-TMCDT
In a 100 ml autoclave purged with nitrogen, 2.1 mmol of nickel naphthenate, 2.1 mmol of triphenyl phophite and 10 ml of isoprene were placed, then the whole was cooled to -40 to -50. "C using an acetone-dry ice bath.
Then, in 3 min. About 7.8 mmol of triethylaluminum was added as a 40% solution in toluene, after which it was allowed to warm to room temperature (about 20-300C). A further 60 ml of isoprene was then added, the autoclave was closed and heated for 16 h at 80 ° C. All the above operations were carried out under the protection of nitrogen.
After cooling, it was acidified with dilute HCl, extracted with diethyl ether, the extract was washed with water, then concentrated and distilled. 20 g of product Eb were thus obtained. 851100/1 Torr.
This product was subjected to analysis by high resolution gas chromatography using a capillary column type R-45. Under these conditions, the presence of a single peak was observed. In addition, cooled to -20 ° C with a dry ice-acetone solution, this product deposited crystals. These, after recrystallization from ethanol provided F 91-920C prisms. The structural analyzes described below confirmed the identity of this substance as being 1,5,9-TMCDT. From the filtrate resulting from the cold separation of this 1,5,9-TMCDT, 1,5,10-TMCDT was obtained and it was found that these two isomers were present in the reaction mixture in molar ratio 1: 1.
To confirm the structure of the above isomers, gas chromatographic analysis of the 1,5,9-trimethylcyclododecane and 1,5,10-trimethylcyclododecane obtained by hydrogenation of the unsaturated compounds was carried out. Their ozonolysis products were also analyzed.
(1) Analysis by gas chromatography of the hydrogenation products.
Gas chromatography of the hydrogenation products of 1,5,9- and 1,5,10-TMCDT was carried out under the following conditions: nitrogen pressure 1.5 kg / cm2; temperature 1400C; hydrogen pressure 0.6 kg / cm2; air pressure 1.2 kg / cm2; R-45 capillary column.
The following results were found: the passage of 1,5,9-trimethylcyclododecane resulting from the hydrogenation of 1,5,9
TMCDT caused the formation of two peaks while with the 1,5,10-trimethylcyclododecane resulting from the hydrogenation of 1,5,10-TMCDT four peaks were observed.
The observed number of these peaks was in agreement with the theoretical number of isomers of each of the unsaturated compounds.
(2) Analysis by gas chromatography and mass spectrum of the ozonolysis products.
A sample of 1,5,9-TMCDT was ozonolyzed at -200 ° C. in ethyl acetate. The same was done with a sample of 1,5,10-TMCDT. The products thus obtained were subjected to reductive cleavage by means of triphenylphosphine which gave fractions of oily consistency. These fractions were analyzed by gas chromatography and mass spectrography.
The following results were obtained: the cleavage product resulting from the treatment of 1,5,9-TMCDT contained CH3-CO
CH2-CH2-CHO while the cleavage product from the treatment of 1,5,10-TMCDT contained OHC-CH2-CH2
CHO, CH3-CO-CH2-CH2-CHO and CH3-CO-CH2-CH2
CO-CH3. These results confirm the above conclusions.
Example 1
150 g of 1,5,9-TMCDT F. 91-92 C, 260 ml of formic acid and 150 ml of dichloromethane were stirred in a three-necked flask. Cooled to 5-10 "C and, over 30 min. A mixture of 7.5 ml of H2SO4 and 40 ml of HCOOH was added dropwise. Stirred 3 h at 5-10" C, then another 3 h at room temperature (20-30 C). After completion of the reaction, CH2Ck was successively removed and
HCOOH by distillation under reduced pressure.
The residue was then neutralized and washed with a 3% aqueous NaHCO3 solution, washed with water, and checked with anh Na2SO4. and, finally, it was vacuum distilled, Eb. 75-80 C / 0.05 Torr, which provided 135 g (theoretical yield 90%) of a fraction consisting of compound (I) cis.

Since the above analytical results do not allow all doubts about the structure of the product obtained to be removed, it was epoxidized with a peracid according to the method described in Swiss patent No. 590 858 and the product thus obtained was isomerized with Lewis acid according to the method described in Swiss Patent No. 590,808, which made it possible to obtain a crystalline ketone F. 99.5-100.5%. The structure of this ketone was determined by crystallographic analysis by X-ray diffraction. The measurements obtained, given below, made it possible to confirm the cis structure of the present tricyclic hydrocarbon.

Example 7
150 g of 1,5,10 were stirred in a three-necked flask.
TMCDT and, after cooling to 1onc, 2.5 ml H2SO4 conc. Was added over 2 h. Stirring was continued for 2 h at 10 ° C. then a further 3 h at room temperature (20-300 ° C.). The neutralization was then washed with 3% aqueous NaHCO3, then washed with water and the residue dried over Na2SO4 anh. By controlled vacuum distillation, 44.8 g (30% yield) of an Eb fraction were obtained. 90-95 C / 0.5 Torr consisting of compound (I) trans-. This product exhibited the same physical properties as that described in Example 6.
Example 8
150 g of 1,5,10-TMCDT, 300 ml of toluene and 200 ml of CHCl 3 were stirred in a three-necked flask at 100 ° C.. Then 30 g of AICl3 anh was added. and stirred 6 h at 100oC. The toluene and chloroform were then distilled off and the aluminum salt was removed by washing with water. The residue was then dried over Na2SO4 anh. and it was vacuum distilled. 37.4 g (25% yield) of an Eb fraction were thus obtained. 90-95 C / 0.5 Torr consisting of compound (I) trans-.
Example 9
150 g of 1,5,10-TMCDT, 150 g of benzene and 150 g of polyphosphoric acid were stirred in a three-necked flask; the whole was brought to the boil and kept for 6 h at this temperature while stirring. The benzene phase was then decanted and the latter was distilled in vacuo. There was thus obtained 37.4 g (25%) of compound (I) trans-.
Example 10
150 g of 1,5,10-TMCDT and 400 ml of HCOOH were stirred in a three-necked flask of 1 l. Heated to 50OC and added dropwise over 30 min. a mixture of 15 g of p-tosylic acid and 40 ml of HCOOH, then the whole was kept stirring for 5 h at 50 C. The formic acid was then recovered under reduced pressure and the residue was washed with 3% aqueous NaHCO3 then with water. After drying over Na2SO4 anh. this residue was distilled under high vacuum so as to obtain 30 g (26%) of an Eb fraction. 90-95 "C / 0.5 Torr consisting of the compound (I) trans-.
