The present invention relates to a new process for the production of fatty acid esters in high yield by reacting a tetraalkyl titanate with a fatty acid or its ammonium salt.
The present invention provides a convenient and economical one-step process for the production of fatty acid esters in high yield. The process according to the invention for the preparation of fatty acid esters of the formula R-CO-OW, in which R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical optionally substituted by at least one alkoxy group and having a carbon chain of at least 5 carbon atoms and R 'is a lower alkyl group, is characterized in that one is a fatty acid of the formula R-CO-OH or the ammonium salt thereof at a temperature in the range from 110 to 200 "C with a titanate of the formula (R'O> 4Ti, where R and R 'have the meanings given above and the molar ratio of fatty acid to titanate is at least 1.0: 0.75.
This reaction is particularly advantageous in the preparation of esters of conjugated unsaturated fatty acids, which are often difficult to obtain by other processes.
To achieve maximum yields, the molar ratio of fatty acid to titanate must not be less than 1.0: 0.75.
Although no limit needs to be set with regard to the titanate excess, for practical reasons there is no advantage from a more than two-fold molar excess of titanate to acid. It is preferred to use 0.75-1.5 molar equivalents of titanate per mole of acid, in particular 0.9-1.5 molar equivalents of titanate per mole of acid. Usually only 0.75 molar equivalents of tetraalkyl titanate are consumed in the reaction. The excess titanate can be recovered by distillation at the end of the reaction.
Although the acid can be diluted with a solvent inert to the reaction, such as hexane, it is preferred that the reaction is carried out in the absence of any solvent for ease of recovery.
The reaction is carried out at a temperature of about 110-200 "C, preferably 130-185" C, and is usually complete in about 1-2 hours. Lower reaction temperatures can be used, but this requires a longer reaction time.
During the initial reaction phase, the alcohol by-product is removed from the tetraalkyl titanate (along with any solvent initially present) by distillation. If the ammonium salt of the acid is used, ammonia is also released and removed in this stage. After the reaction has ended, the remaining tetraalkyl titanate ester can be recovered by distillation under vacuum, or remaining organotitanates can be recovered by diluting with a solvent inert to the ester, such as hexane, pentane, benzene, xylene, etc., and adding a small amount of water and a base such as Calcium oxide or sodium hydroxide. The resulting precipitate of hydrated titanium oxide is filtered off.
The reaction mixture in hexane can also be extracted with a large excess of an aqueous acid, such as 8N sulfuric acid, then with an aqueous solution of a titanium (IVS complex-forming agent, such as 5/0 aqueous hydroxyacetic acid, and then with an aqueous base, such as 2N aqueous sodium hydroxide) will.
The term aliphatic hydrocarbon group as used here refers to a straight or branched chain alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl group which can optionally be substituted with one or more lower alkoxy groups and contains 5-30 carbon atoms and has a chain length of at least 5 carbon atoms.
The term lower alkyl refers to a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon group of 1-6 carbon atoms, such as methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, etc.
Typical fatty acids which can be used according to the invention include z. B. sorbic acid, lauric acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, parinaric acid, erythrogenic acid, 3,7,1 1-methyldodeca-2,4dienoic acid, 1 1-methoxy-3,7,1 1-trimethyldodeca-2, 4-dienoic acid, 11-ethoxy-3,7,11-trimethyldodeca-2,4-dienoic acid and their ammonium salts.
The following examples illustrate the present invention without limiting it.
example 1
To 143 g (0.5 mol) of the ammonium salt of (2E, 4ES11-methoxy-3,7,11-trimethyl-2,4-dodecadienoic acid (which contained a small amount of the 2Z, 4E isomer) were added 148 cc (0.5 mol) of tetraisopropyl titanate was added and the mixture was heated to 150 ° C. When the temperature rose, the ammonium salt dissolved, releasing ammonia, and isopropyl alcohol was distilled from the solution. The reaction mixture was stirred for 1.5 hours at 150 ° C. 155 "C. The temperature was then lowered to 100" C and the remaining tetraisopropyl titanate (33.4 g) was recovered by distillation at 0.3 mm Hg. The remaining liquid was cooled to 25 "C and diluted with 500 cc of hexane .
Then 20 g of calcium oxide and 30 cc of water were added. The resulting slurry was stirred for 3 hours after which the product was filtered off; 144.4 g of isopropyl2E, 4E> 11-methoxy-3,7,1-trimethyl-2,4-dodecadienoate (with a low
Amount of the 2Z, 4E isomer) as a pale yellow oil in 93/0 yield; Bp (bath) 90 "C (0.010 mm).
Example 2
A mixture of 34.95 g of 1 1-methoxy-3.71 1-trimethyl-2,4-dodecadienoic acid (mainly in the form of the 2E, 4E isomer) and 39 cc of tetraisopropyl titanate was heated to 90 ° C. under a nitrogen atmosphere volatile material was removed by distillation at a pressure of 100 mm and a pot temperature of 90-130 "C. The distillate, consisting mainly of isopropyl alcohol, was 9 cc. Then the residue was heated to 150 "C under a nitrogen atmosphere and left for 1.5 hours
145-155 "C. After cooling the mixture to about
100 "C, the remaining tetraisopropyl titanate was obtained by distillation at 3 mm and a bubble temperature of 100-150" C.
This approximately 15 minute process provided 9.5 cc of recovered tetraisopropyl titanate. The remaining liquid was cooled to room temperature, diluted with hexane, and extracted for 10 minutes with 49 cc of BN sulfuric acid. The hexane phase was separated off and washed successively with 5/0 aqueous hydroxyacetic acid, aqueous 2N sodium hydroxide and water. Each aqueous phase was back extracted into hexane. The hexane solutions were combined and the solvent removed in vacuo. Isopropyl 1-methoxy-3,7,1 l-trimethyl-2-p-dodecadienoate was thus obtained in 97/0 yield as a pale amber-colored liquid, mainly in the form of the trans, trans isomer.
Example 3
A mixture of 5.95 g (0.025 mol) of 3,7,11-trimethyl-2,4-dodecadienoic acid (mainly in the form of the 2E, 4E-isomer) and 6.45 g (0.0375 mol) of tetramethyl titanate was added with stirring heated to 70 "C under a nitrogen atmosphere.
After most of the solid had dissolved, the vessel was evacuated to 100 mm pressure and the methanol was removed by distillation. The mixture was heated to 140 "C under vacuum with stirring, then nitrogen was introduced and the temperature increased to 165" C. After 3 hours at 160-165 ", the reaction mixture was cooled to about 25" C and diluted with 15 cc of hexane. The resulting solution was stirred vigorously with 18 cc of 8N sulfuric acid for 30 minutes. The organic phase was separated off, filtered and washed successively with 5/0 aqueous hydroxyacetic acid, aqueous 1N sodium hydroxide and water.
The solvent was removed by evaporation in vacuo and gave 5.74 g of methyl 3,7,1 1-trimethyl-2,4-dodecadienoate in 90/0 yield as a pale yellow liquid, mainly as 2E, 4E isomers; Bp (bath) 95 "C (0.3 mm).
Example 4
A mixture of 20.4 g (0.080 mol) of the ammonium salt of 3,7,1 1-trimethyl-2,4-dodecadienoic acid (mainly as 2E, 4E-isomer) and 25 cc (0.12 mol) of tetraethyl titanate was under a Heated to 80 "C in a nitrogen atmosphere.
The system was evacuated to a pressure of 100 mm, whereupon ethanol and ammonia evaporated from the reaction mixture. The temperature was increased to 130 "C and nitrogen was passed into the vessel. The reaction mixture was held at 150-155" C for 2 hours, then cooled to about 25 "C, diluted with 50 cc of hexane and vigorously with 60 cc of 8N sulfuric acid Stirring extracted for 30 minutes, the organic phase was separated and washed successively with 50% aqueous hydroxyacetic acid, aqueous 1N sodium hydroxide and water.
The solvent was removed by evaporation under vacuum and gave 19.73 g of ethyl 3,7,1 1-trimethyl-2,4-dodecadienoate as an amber liquid in 93% yield, mainly as 2E, 4E-isomer; Bp (bath) 95 "C (0.03 mm).
Example 5
Example 2 was repeated using 11-ethoxy-3,7,11-trimethyl-2,4-dodecadienoic acid (mainly as the trans-trans isomer) and tetraethyl titanate, and yielded ethyl 11-ethoxy-3,7,11-trimethyl-2,4 -dodecadienoate, mainly as trans, trans isomer); Bp (bath) 120 "C (0.5 mm).
The radical R given above is preferably an aliphatic group having 5-30 carbon atoms, the chain containing 5-20 carbon atoms, e.g. B. 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 or 20 carbon atoms. The chain can be substituted with one or more alkyl groups, preferably with 1, 2, 3 or 4 groups, preferably with those with 1, 2 or 3 carbon atoms, with the proviso that the entire remainder contains not more than 30 carbon atoms.
