Abstract

Prepn. of 3,7-dimethyl-1,5,7-octatriene-3-ol (I) comprises oxidising 3,7-dimethyl-2,5,7-octatriene (II) with singlet oxygen and reducing the prod. Cpd. (I) can be used as perfume or flavouring component and as an intermediate for dihydropyran derivs. with useful organoleptic properties. The 3R(-) isomer occurs in the essential oil of an asiatic conifer, and the 35(+) isomer occurs in black tea. Pref. redn. is effected with dimethyl sulphide, triphenyl phosphine, Na2 SO3 or Na BH4. The process gives good yields (e.g. 56%) using a readily available starting material; (II) can be prepd. from isoprene.
