Abstract

The prepn. of nuts, such as cashew nuts, with very hard shells, is assisted by spacing out the nuts in proper alignment and by holding them between two endless belts. Two rotating cutters can swing on spring-loaded arms in a horizontal plane to follow the contours of the nut shells. They cut a nick into the shells from both sides to a depth which is defined by a shoulder on the cutter. This saves most of the manual labour required at present to shell the nuts. and preserves a much greater percentage of whole nuts which bring twice the revenue compared with broken nuts.
