The present invention relates to an installation for manufacturing a rod formed from a bundle of filaments linked together using a binding agent, this installation comprising means for applying the binding agent, a flexible and porous endless belt, and means for driving and guiding this belt arranged so that the belt envelops and drives the bundle of filaments successively through heating means, comprising a tubular passage with a smooth wall and means for injecting a heating fluid, and through cooling means also comprising a tubular passage.
Such an installation is described in US Patent No. 3455766.
In this installation, the steam injection takes place approximately halfway between the inlet and the outlet of the heating section via a side chamber, the steam being distributed along the entire heating section. . There is therefore no precise localization of the start of the injection of the steam.
However, it was found that there was a critical minimum time to be observed in order to obtain a good weld, that is to say a solid weld, of the filaments between them. Indeed, the binding agent, generally constituted by a plasticizer such as triacetin, is applied to the filaments shortly before the entry of the bundle of filaments into the heating means. However, this plasticizer must be distributed over the filaments and already acts on the filaments at room temperature, the submission to water vapor having the effect of activating the action of the plasticizer on the filaments, that is to say to accelerate the migration of plasticizer molecules inside the filaments.
However, if the steam injection is carried out too quickly compared to the application of the plasticizer, the latter dissolves uniformly in the fiber too quickly and the surface softening of the fibers - essential for the welding of the fiber contact points - cannot be done. There will be no interpenetration of the fibers and the welding of the points of contact between the fibers (or filaments) will not be done or will be done in a way too weak to withstand subsequent handling. Beyond this minimum critical time, welding is still carried out satisfactorily, but the operation results in a waste of time.
The object of the present invention is precisely to inject water vapor or another heating fluid at the instant corresponding simultaneously to the minimum critical time and to the optimum time for the efficiency of the installation.
The installation according to the invention is characterized in that the injection means are constituted by at least one peripheral channel having openings opening radially into said tubular passage.
This peripheral channel, preferably annular, makes it possible to obtain a precise localization of the radial injection of the heating fluid. In addition, by a set of interchangeable liners, it is possible to select one position among others depending on the type of filaments, the plasticizer, as well as the position of the means for applying the plasticizer relative to the heating means. and, optionally, the speed of travel of the beam. Liners of different internal diameters also make it possible to obtain rods of different diameters.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the installation according to the invention.

The installation thus shown comprises a flexible and porous endless belt 1 driven and tensioned, in a manner known per se, by cylindrical pulleys 2, 3, 4 and 5. This endless belt passes through a heating and cooling unit 6 in which it takes a cylindrical shape which is given to it, in a manner known per se, by a funnel 7 mounted at the inlet of the aggregate 6. The bundle of filaments 8 to be treated, for example a bundle of acetate filaments of cellulose, first passes through a plasticization booth 9, known per se, in which the filaments are coated with a plasticizer, such as triacetin. The beam 8 is driven by the belt I which wraps it in the aggregate 6.
On leaving the aggregate, the bundle exits in the form of a relatively rigid cylindrical rod Sa, circular or not, which engages in a cutting machine, not shown, in which it is cut into sticks.
The aggregate 6, which is in the embodiment shown in the form of a rectangular parallelepiped, consists of three sections arranged end to end; a first section 10 in which the bundle of filaments is heated by a heating fluid, for example steam, a second section 11 constituted by a simple cover delimiting a rectangular parallelepiped enclosure that the bundle of filaments passes through freely without support, and a third section 12 in which the bundle of filaments is cooled. The sections 10 and 12 consist of two superimposed parts which can be separated from each other for the installation of the endless belt. The cover of section 11 can also be raised for this purpose.
The heating section 10 consists of two superimposed massive parts 13 and 14 in each of which is formed a semi-cylindrical channel such that the juxtaposition of the parts 13 and 14 forms a cylindrical tubular passage 15. Of course, means are provided. relative positioning of the parts 13 and 14 with respect to one another, such as pins or cusps, and optionally a hinge, these means, not shown, being well known to those skilled in the art. In each of the semi-circular channels of the parts 13 and 14, at a certain distance from the entrance to the heating section, are machined two circular grooves 16 and 17 whose junction defines a circular channel constituting an injection ring communicating with the 'outside by a conduit 18 intended to be connected to a source of pressurized steam.
The wall of the cylindrical duct 15 is smooth and the diameter of this duct is such that the belt enveloping the bundle of filaments exerts pressure on this bundle. The position of the steam injection ring relative to the laminator 9 is such that the time elapsing between the moment when the filaments leave the plasticizer 9 and the moment when they pass through it. injection ring corresponds to an optimum value. This distance is determined experimentally. It is of course possible to act on the time by acting on the speed of the belt 1, but it can be considered that, in order to achieve optimum efficiency, the belt I must be driven at the highest possible speed, so that this factor is determined.
According to a more elaborate embodiment, several steam injection rings are provided, such as 19 and 20, identical to the first. These rings may have an individual tubing for connection to the steam source or else be joined together by a longitudinal channel. This is possible because provision is made to place in the duct 15 a removable cylindrical jacket 21 split on one side along a generatrix 22 to allow the lateral introduction of the endless belt. This sleeve 21 is provided with perforations 23 arranged circularly and intended to be placed in front of one of the injection rings.
This jacket therefore makes it possible to select one of the steam injection rings, even if they are simultaneously supplied by the steam. it is of course possible to use several injection rings simultaneously. The use of removable liners of different internal diameters also makes it possible to vary the diameter of the final rod 8a.
Section 11 is a simple non-sealed cavity whose essential role is to protect the bundle of filaments against dust and other external agents. By means of a pipe 24, a vacuum is created in this cavity so as to prevent the excess steam, exiting through the ends of the tubular passage 15, from entering the cooling zone 12, the excess steam exiting towards the end. 'front being sucked by the tube 24.
The cooling section has a tubular passage 25 with a smooth wall made up of two semi-cylindrical channels like the section 10. This tubular passage 25 is connected to two pipes 26 and 27, cold air being introduced in countercurrent by the tubing 26 and exiting through tubing 27. The cold air can act in different ways: it can be introduced with sufficient pressure to pass through the filaments, or it can act superficially by flowing along the bundle, or it can act superficially by flowing along the bundle. can cool the wall of the tubular passage 25 which could be constituted by a simple tube split along a generatrix. Instead of air, another cooling fluid can be used, for example water circulating around the tubular passage.
As an alternative, instead of the rings for injecting steam into the heating section 10, it is possible to provide a helical channel extending over all or part of the length of the passage 15, the selection of the position and the number of steam injection stations using a perforated jacket.
