EMI3.2
EMI3.3

E-A Gelgehalt in % = - 100
E Dabei bedeuten E = Gesamtgewicht der untersuchten
Probe

The present invention relates to the preparation of new 3-hydroxybenzyloxadiazolones and their sulfur analogues, and their use for stabilizing organic material.
The present invention is particularly concerned with a process for the preparation of compounds of Formula I.
EMI1.1
wherein
R1 alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl R .. hydrogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl
R, hydrogen or alkyl with 1-4 carbon atoms
R4, if m = 1 is hydrogen, alkyl, oxaalkyl, thiaalkyl, cycloalkyl, an alkylthio or alkoxy group, a substituted or unsubstituted aralkyl or aryl group or a group
EMI1.2
where R1, R and R3 have the above meaning and Y and Z are independently oxygen or sulfur, or, if m = 2, alkylene, oxa- or thiaalkylene, vinylene or arylene, Y and Z are independently oxygen or sulfur and m the number 1 or 2 mean.
If the symbols R1 and R. in Formula I mean an alkyl radical, they can be straight-chain or branched-chain alkyl radicals, such as e.g. a methyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, 2-ethylbutyl or n-octyl radical. Alkyl radicals with 1-8 carbon atoms are preferred and the tertiary butyl radical is particularly preferred. R1 and R2 mean a cycloalkyl radical.
so it can e.g. be a cyclohexyl, methylcyclohexyl, dimethyicyclohexyl or cyclooctyl radical.
In the case of aralkyl radicals, R1 or R2 can be, for example, benzyl, cc-methylbenzyl, or ac-dimethylbenzyl radicals.

If R4 in formula I is an alkyl radical, it can be a straight or branched chain alkyl radical, e.g. to a methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, ethylhexyl, isodecyl, octadecyl or trimethylhexyl radical.
If R4 is an oxaalkyl or thiaalkyl radical, it is a radical of the formula CyH2S + I-Q-CHoy- where Q represents an oxygen or sulfur atom and x and y are integers, the sum of which is preferably 2 to 20.
Examples of these are the radicals: C2H5-O-CH ,, CH2-, C2H5-O- -CH2-CH2CH2-, C, H ,, - O-CH, -, C4H9-S-CH2CH2-, C, 2H2s-S - -CH2CH2-, C18H3, -S-CH2-.

So it can e.g. a benzyl, phenylethyl, phenylpropyl, diphenylmethyl, tolylmethyl, z, z-dimethylbenzyl, 3-hydroxybenzyl, 3-methyl-4-hydroxybenzyl, or 2- (3-tert-butyl-4- act hydroxyphenyl) ethyl radical. It is preferably an aralkyl radical substituted by two alkyl groups with 1-4 C atoms and one hydroxyl group, e.g.
around 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl-, 2- (3,5-dimethyl -4-hydroxyphenyl) -ethyl- or 2- (3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxy - phenyl) ethyl radical.
R4 in the meaning of an aryl radical represents in particular an unsubstituted phenyl or naphthyl radical or a substituted phenyl radical. The substituents of such phenyl radicals are primarily halogen atoms, such as bromine, fluorine, iodine and especially chlorine, hydroxyl, alkyl with up to 12 carbon atoms, in particular those with 1-4 carbon atoms, alkoxy with 1-18 carbon atoms, acylamino or acyloxy groups each with 2-18 carbon atoms or alkoxycarbonyl groups with 2-5 carbon atoms are possible. The process according to the invention for the preparation of the compounds of the formula I is characterized in that a compound of the formula II
EMI2.2
with m mol of a compound of the formula III,
EMI2.3
where R1, R2 and R3 are as defined above and A is a halogen atom, preferably chlorine, or a group
EMI2.4
or a group
EMI2.5
mean in which Rs is an alkyl radical with 1-4 C atoms, for example a methyl, ethyl, isopropyl or tertiary butyl radical.
The compounds of formula III are known substances, for example, from the corresponding alkylphenols by chloromethylation with formaldehyde and hydrochloric acid or - in the case of amines by aminomethylation with formaldehyde and secondary amines or - in the case of dithiocarbaminates - by reaction with formaldehyde, carbon disulfide and a secondary amine can be produced. Examples of compounds of the formula III are:
2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-chloromethylphenol, 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4 - (N, N-dimethylaminomethyl) -phenol or 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl- N, N-diethyl dithiocarbaminate.
This implementation proceeds in the sense of the equation:
EMI3.1
If A is a halogen atom, moles of hydrogen halide are formed and it is advisable to add stoichiometric amounts of a base such as triethylamine or pyridine to neutralize it. It is preferably carried out in a polar solvent such as dimethylformamide, dimethylacetamide or a lower alcohol.
If A is a group
EMI3.2
means, the use of a polar solvent or its mixture with water is also recommended.
In this case too, it is advantageous to work with the addition of stoichiometric amounts of a base. As such, an inorganic base such as an alkali metal hydroxide or alkali metal carbonate, or an organic base such as a trialkylamine or a heterocyclic base can be used.
If A is a group
EMI3.3
means, it is advantageous to work in an anhydrous solvent, for example in benzene, toluene, dioxane, dimethylcormamide or dimethylacetamide and with the addition of catalytic amounts of a base, for example lithium amide, sodium amide, calcium hydride, sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide or sodium methylate. In the case of the reaction with compounds of the formula III, the reaction is carried out at elevated temperature, preferably at 50-150 ° C. In those cases where bases are added, it can be advantageous to use an acid such as acetic acid or hydrochloric acid before working up to neutralize.
The end products can be isolated by the customary methods, for example by distilling off part of the solvent or by diluting with water and filtering the precipitated products. The end products of the formula I are crystalline substances and can therefore be purified by recrystallization.

100 parts of unstabilized ethylene-propylene rubber are homogenized with 0.1 part each of the stabilizers given in Table 4 in a Brabender plastograph equipped with a roller kneader type 50 EC, at 1500 and 60 revolutions / minute for 10 minutes. The mixtures stabilized in this way are pressed in a plate press at 1200 for 5 minutes to give 1 mm thick plates. The non-stabilized rubber sheet used as a comparison is produced in the same way.
The criterion for the protective effect of the incorporated stabilizers is the gel content determined after storage in air at elevated temperatures. For this purpose, the test samples obtained above are kept on an aluminum base in a convection oven at 100 "and periodically examined for their gel content, which is determined as follows:
About 1 g of the samples are cut into pieces of about 3 × 3 × 1 mm and dissolved in 100 ml of n-hexane at room temperature overnight. These solutions are filtered through glass wool, the gel particles retained by the glass wool are washed with 3 times 20 ml of n-hexane, the filtered solutions are evaporated to dryness and dried to constant weight.
The gel content of a sample is then obtained using the following calculation:
E-A gel content in% = - 100
E means E = total weight of the examined
sample
A = weight of the dissolved portion of the sample examined.
The measure of the effectiveness of the stabilizer is defined as the time after which the gel content of the stabilized sample reaches 15%. The results are given in hours.
