The present invention relates to a vehicle clinometer intended in particular for motorcycles, but which may also be suitable for other vehicles or machines taking a marked inclination, such as dinghy cycles or sailboats, for example.
The invention aims to provide a simple, robust clinometer with a low cost price, making it possible to easily assess the inclination taken by a motorcycle in a bend or by a sailboat in a gust, this in particular to allow comparisons. of performances between athletes.
The clinometer which is the subject of the invention is characterized in that it comprises a curved tubular body containing a liquid and having on its outer arcuate face intended to be turned upwards a series of angularly spaced interior housings receiving a bubble or a float coming from to be housed in a different housing according to the inclination taken by the tubular body.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, two embodiments of the clinometer which is the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of the first embodiment, with partial sections along the lines A-A and
B-B of fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a cross section of the clinometer shown in FIG. 1, on a larger scale and along line 2-2 of FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is an elevational view of the second embodiment, with a partial section along the line C-C of FIG. 4.
Fig. 4 is a cross section of the clinometer shown in FIG. 3, along line 4-4 of fig. 3 and on a larger scale.
The clinometer shown in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises, housed in a housing 1, a curved tubular body 2 having the general shape of an arc of a circle. The body 2 is made of a transparent material, a thermoplastic material for example, and it comprises, on its outer arcuate surface 3, eleven hemispherical interior housings 4 angularly spaced and regularly distributed along the body, every ten degrees, for example. .
The tubular body 2 is placed in a trim element 5, made of expanded plastic or any other similar foam material, the outer shape of which corresponds to the inner shape of the housing 1 and which comprises an arcuate central groove 6 of the same contour as the tubular body 1.
In elevation, as visible in fig. 1, the element 5 therefore adapts closely to the contour of the tubular body 2.
A front wall 7 of the trim element 5 is pierced with eleven windows 8 which each correspond to one of the housings 4 of the body 2. These windows 8 are located behind transparent lenses 9 embedded in the front wall 10 of the housing 1. , which is itself in opaque material.
The lenses could also be shaped directly in the wall of the housing, then in transparent material.
A wedging element 11 placed behind the element 6 maintains the latter applied against the wall 10 of the housing and retains the tubular body 2 in the groove 6.
Bulbs 12, two in number for example, which are housed in the housing 1 in a free space 13 located above the element 11, constitute a light source placed behind the tubular body 2.
The clinometer is intended to be fixed by fixing lugs 14 of its housing on the handlebars or on the tank of a motorcycle, in the position shown in FIG. 1, in which the outer arch 3 of the body 2 having housings 4 faces upwards.
The tubular body 2 contains an opaque liquid 15 formed, for example, from a mixture of water and glycerin tinted with methylene blue. Its filling is carried out so as to leave in the tubular body 2 an air bubble visible at 16, of a volume corresponding approximately to that of one of the housings 4. The result is that the liquid 15 which always fills ten housings 4 opacifies all the windows 8 except for that corresponding to the housing 4 in which the air bubble is housed.
Thus, in the position of the apparatus shown in FIG. 1, which corresponds to a vertical position of the motorcycle, the bubble 16 is located in the central housing and all the windows 8 corresponding to the other housings are obscured by the opaque liquid.
The light coming from the interior lighting constituted by the bulbs 12 can therefore only reach the corresponding central lens which alone is illuminated, while all the other lenses corresponding to obscured windows remain dark.
The front face 10 of the housing 1 bears a graduation 17 which gives the angular positions, in degrees, of the different lenses 9, on either side of the axis passing through the central lens and through the center of curvature of the tubular body 2 .
When the motorcycle takes an inclination in a road, the lens 9, which will be the only one illuminated, will be all the more distant from the central lens as the inclination is strong, and it should be noted that the bubble 16 will suddenly pass from a slot 4 to the other.
Tests have shown that an apparatus such as the one represented in which the tubular body 2 had a radius of curvature R of approximately 70 mm and which included housings 4 arranged every ten degrees made it possible to make significant comparisons between sports performances. and how to drive different drivers. The device can also be mounted on a rear seat handle to allow the passenger to appreciate this performance as well.
In a simpler variant, the electric light source could be omitted, the housing 2 then being executed in its rear part at least in a transparent material, to allow daylight to illuminate the lens corresponding to the interior from the inside. the window not obscured. An oblique reflecting surface is then advantageously provided at the rear of the housing.
In the clinometer shown in Figs. 3 and 4, a tubular body 21 of transparent plastic material comprises an outer branch 22 in the form of an arc of a circle having, in place of place in place, bulges constituting inner housings 23 for a spherical float 24. This float, which is of a color contrasting with that of a liquid 25 filling the tube, will be placed in one or the other of the housings, according to the inclination given to the device, the position taken by the float being observed directly through the wall transparent body 21 which bears a graduation 25.
To facilitate the movement of the float 24, the two ends of the branch 22 are connected to each other by an internal bypass tube 26.
This device can easily be manufactured at a very low cost in molded plastic, for example in the form of two identical half-shells assembled.
Because of its low cost, its extensive use can be envisaged on many mopeds, and even on bicycles.
The device bearing an emblem or an inscription can constitute a good advertising medium.
The manufacture of the molded plastic body can also provide on each housing 23 a wall of variable thickness forming a lens facilitating observation of the position taken by the float.
In a variant, the float could also be replaced by a bubble.
In a variant of the apparatus shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, the bubble 16 could also be replaced by a translucent float. A bypass tube could also be established between the ends of the tubular body 2.
