The main patent CH-PS 573 980 describes a process for the production of leather fiber materials from fibers of mineral and / or vegetable tanned leather waste and other types of fibers, in which a suspension is made from the mixture by adding water and a fleece is formed by dewatering Fleece is then dried, the product thus obtained is finished and optionally trimmed, leather fibers being mixed with non-leather fibers with a length of 3 to 40 mm, the suspension being brought to a consistency of 0.1 to 0.5 g / l and that by dewatering obtained inherently strong fleece is added after drying a binder.
According to this process, brown floor leather is mixed with moist chrome leather split in the desired weight ratio and ground. Fibers made from different materials are then added to this mixture.
It has now been found that it is possible to use chrome leather split on its own without the addition of tan leather. It can be fiberized wet or dry and then mixed with the different types of fabric. The possibility of using chored leather split alone is surprising because the initial strength of chrome leather split is so low that it cannot be impregnated between two rollers.
The dewatering of the aqueous fiber material is carried out according to the method of the main patent on a rising screen machine. Here the suspension is fed onto a slightly rising sieve, whereby the sieve and suspension can have the same direction of movement but different speeds. As a result of the turbulence in the material feed box, which the fibers can follow without interfering with each other because of the approximately 10-fold greater dilution, and the formation already in the material feed box, the fibers accumulate randomly on the screen. Below the screen there are drainage boxes, into which the water runs perpendicular to the inflow direction of the suspension onto the screen, whereby the fibers are fixed in their three-dimensional random position.
The three-dimensional felting of the fleece can be further improved by adding air in finely divided form in the inlet box of the ascending sieve; as a result, the fibers are formed on the screen even more irregularly than was previously the case. Finely divided air can be supplied, for example, with the aid of a sintered plate which is arranged in the bottom of the feed box. The fibers are swirled by the air blown in and held in their random position by the air bubbles right up to the end, especially in relation to the vertical sector. The air bubbles serve to a certain extent as holding points on which the fibers lay in a statistically evenly distributed position due to the gas / water interfacial tension. In this position the fibers are sucked onto the sieve together with the air bubbles and the water.
While water and air can pass through the sieve, the fibers are deposited on the sieve, whereby they essentially maintain their position, since they support each other when they are deposited on the sieve.
The air bubbles introduced into the suspension can furthermore be stabilized by adding thickeners to the suspension; such a thickening agent is, for example, methyl cellulose, which is added to the suspension in the usual concentration.
It is also advantageous to add polysaccharides in a concentration of about 0.1 to 0.5% by weight to the suspension water in which the fibers are suspended. This addition reduces the friction of the water to about half the normal value. The felting process can be accelerated on the inclined sieve or thicker fleeces can be produced or the material can be ground more smeary. The energy consumption for pumping the water is reduced accordingly.
For example, Fig. 1 shows the way in which air bubbles can be introduced into the sieve system. In this figure:
A the feed box,
1 the screen mesh,
2 one of the carrier rolls,
4 and 4 'the drainage boxes,
5 the sintered plate which is arranged in a box at the bottom of the feed box A; the sintered plate box is connected to a compressed air tank (not shown),
6 the fiber / water suspension,
7 air bubbles.
The sintered plate is preferably made of polyethylene.
Fig. 2 gives an enlarged view of the air bubbles with fibers above the sieve.
It is also proposed to impregnate the fleece impregnated with the binding agent with suitable substances such as bone oil, glycerine or another polyol in order to increase its flexibility. The impregnation of the fleece can either be carried out simultaneously with the impregnation with the binding agent or separately in a special operation.
The sheet, impregnated and dried according to the process of the main patent, is sanded for thickness and surface. After sanding the sheet is covered with plastic, e.g. Polyvinyl chloride coated.
To coat the leather fleece, the surface should be as smooth as possible. Two methods are available for this: 1. The grinding process after air drying.
The following is carried out:
1.1 Pre-sanding with 80t'r.l20 grit.
The grinding rollers are set at a distance.
1.2 The regrinding is done with grain size 320-400 im

Both sanding processes can also be combined when the sanding roller turns up to the pressure roller
Distance is set and the material web is guided around the sanding roller by 10-40.
1.3 A further smoothing of the sanded surface can be achieved by ironing. This can be done with the help of a heated drum against which a felt cloth is pressed. The fleece is then between
Felt and drum are pressed and smoothed out in the process.
Such a system is known in the textile industry as the trough press.
With this operation you can also do a
Solidification of the fleece can be achieved when the
Fleece is moistened beforehand or is steamed on the drum. The area shrinkage is around 30-40%.
After insertion into the pressure felt cloth, the surface of the leather fleece is then smoothed on the drum (see FIG. 5 in FIG
21 the fleece,
22 the water tank,
23 the pressure felt cloth and
24 mean the drum).
2. The smoothing of the leather fleece can also take place by drying by means of contact heating between two plates. A vacuum applied to a plate lowers the steam temperature to such an extent that a
Keratinization of the leather fleece surface is avoided.
This side of the plate is cooled so that the steam condenses immediately.
The structural details are shown in FIGS. 6 to 9.

The leather fleece, which is wet from binding, is fed to the sieve belt 34 via a conveyor belt. The driven sieve belt transports the leather fleece between the upper and lower plates, where it is dried while compressing the surface smoothing. The pressing force of the springs 39 is adjustable.
7 shows a longitudinal section (in the direction of the material web) through upper and lower panels.
The compression of the leather fleece 47 at the top plate inlet 40 can be clearly seen. First of all, it would be assumed that the fleece tears off at this point and eludes compression. The fact is, however, that the fleece condenses here. It is important that sufficient heat is supplied for evaporation.
