Abstract
The purpose is to provide, at low cost, metal sheeting, for roof and rainwater guttering, drainpipes, roofing, sill cladding, other building constructions, tinsmithing, and plumbing uses, which is durable, rust and corrosion-resistant, and does not need to be painted, even where industrial gases are a hazard. This is achieved by the use of a load bearing centre layer of non-galvanised sheet steel, coated with a laminar-soldered sheet of copper foil on both sides, providing a sealed connection which completely protects the steel from atmospheric conditions. The sheet steel can be immersed in a tinning bath, and the prepared copper foil rolled straight onto it. This is much less expensive than copper sheeting of the same strength, with the same qualities.
Description

So far, for the production of gutters or rain gutters, downpipes, roof coverings, ledge and sill cladding, etc. Like. Usually galvanized sheet steel is used. Experience shows that this sheet, despite being galvanized, will corrode in a few years or, after a relatively short period of time, will have to be given a protective paint coat if major damage is to be avoided. Galvanized sheet steel is comparatively cheap to buy for the first time, but is prone to rust, especially in industrial areas with high levels of exhaust emissions, so that the protective coatings that are required after a while not only increase the workload, but also result in increased maintenance costs.
Aluminum sheets are also attacked and destroyed at an early stage by industrial fumes. Copper sheet has proven itself best for plumbing work, which also offers special architectural charms due to the formation of verdigris. However, sheet copper is expensive and can therefore only be used in rare cases.
The invention is therefore based on the object of eliminating these deficiencies and of creating a sheet metal for building plumbing needs which, in comparison with copper sheet, causes considerably lower acquisition costs, but otherwise has the same good properties.
The sheet metal according to the invention for plumbing needs is characterized by a load-bearing middle layer made of galvanized sheet steel (black sheet), which is provided on both sides with a copper cover foil soldered on over the surface. Soldering creates an intimate connection between the copper foils and the black sheet, so that it is fully protected against atmospheric influences and the entire sheet has the same durability as pure copper sheet, which does not require any protective coating or the like. The cost of the sheet according to the invention is only about 3040% of the price of an equally thick copper sheet, since the supporting, cheap black sheet middle layer results in substantial savings on the expensive copper sheet and soldering the copper foils does not cause any particular difficulties.
This soldering can be done in such a way that the steel sheet (black sheet) is immersed in a tin bath and immediately afterwards the appropriately pretreated copper foils are rolled on.
