The invention relates to a process for the production of anisotropic foams by heating polymers containing foaming agents to a temperature at which the foaming agent has a vapor pressure which, at normal external pressure, is sufficient to foam the polymeric mass, and the mass is kept under a pressure, in which cells do not yet form, and then relax.
It is known to produce foams in the manner described. Foams made of polyvinyl chloride in particular are produced using this process.
The known foams produced by this process are well suited for many fields of application because of their properties.
According to DOS 1 544 632, however, these known thermoplastic foams have the disadvantage of poor heat resistance and, at high temperatures, poor strength. It has therefore been proposed to produce the foam in a manner known per se from poly (2,6-dimethyl) phenylene oxide (PPO). According to Bntisches Patent 1,138,125, these foams made from poly (2,6-dimethyl) phenylene oxide are preferably used as insulation material on the inner walls of tanks for low-boiling liquids.
It is therefore particularly important that the foams that come into contact with a wide variety of liquids have particularly good chemical resistance. However, foams made from PPO are not suitable for all liquids.
The aim of the invention is to overcome the disadvantages mentioned and to produce a foam which is primarily characterized by improved chemical resistance.
According to the invention, this is achieved in that the polymer used is a copolymer which is produced from 100 parts by weight of a mixture of (A) at least 50 percent by weight, based on the sum of the weights of (A) and (B), of an alpha, beta-olefinic unsaturated mononitrile of the formula
EMI1.1
wherein R is hydrogen, a low molecular weight alkyl group having 1-4 carbon atoms or a halogen atom and (B) up to 50 percent by weight, based on the sum of the weights of (A) and (B), of an ester of an olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid of the formula
EMI1.2
wherein R is hydrogen, an alkyl group with 14 carbon atoms or a halogen atom and R2 is an alkyl group with 1-6 carbon atoms,
that in the presence of 1-40 parts by weight (C) of a copolymer of butadiene and / or isoprene on the one hand and an olefinically unsaturated nitrile of the formula
EMI1.3
wherein R has the meaning given above, on the other hand, is polymerized, the copolymer (C) being prepared from 50-95 percent by weight of the diene and 50-5 percent by weight of the olefinically unsaturated nitrile, and at least one foaming agent and at least one nucleating agent are introduced into the polymer , exposes the mass to temperatures of 90 to 130 "C for 30 to 90 seconds under a pressure at which cells do not yet form, then relaxes and then exposes the foamed mass to temperatures of 60 to 90" C for at least 5 hours at normal pressure .
The process according to the invention is preferably carried out in such a way that the copolymer is kneaded with at least one nucleating agent and pressed into sheets. The plates are preferably placed in the foaming agent or the foaming agent mixture at normal temperature until a degree of swelling of the copolymer / foaming agent of 1: 1 to 1.5 is reached. The swollen panels are set up freely so that the foaming agent can evaporate and a desired mixed polymer / foaming agent ratio is achieved in the panels. The preferably mixed polymer / foaming agent ratio is 1: 0.8 to 1: 0.1, preferably 1: 0.25 to 1: 0.15.
Another preferred process consists in kneading the copolymer with at least one nucleating agent and with at least one foaming agent. The ratio of mixed polymer to foaming agent should be 1: 0.5 to 1: 0.9, preferably 1: 0.6 to 1: 0.8. The kneaded mixture is pressed into sheets which are set up freely until the foaming agent has evaporated to such an extent that the ratio of copolymer to foaming agent is 1: 0.8 to 1: 0.1, preferably 1: 0.25 to 1: 0.15 , is.
The foaming agents used are preferably acetone and methylene chloride, alone or as a mixture with one another. Vermiculite is advantageously used as a nucleating agent in amounts of up to 10%, preferably 3 to 6%, based on the amount of copolymer.
Azoisobutyric acid dinitrile in amounts of up to 6%, preferably 2 to 4%, based on the amount of copolymer, can expediently be used as an additional nucleating agent for vermiculite.
The mass to be foamed is expediently placed between two parallel, heatable plates which do not move against each other during the heating of the mass, but can move apart in parallel when the mass to be foamed has been exposed to the set temperature for a sufficiently long time. The mass to be foamed can also be pressed after being introduced between the parallel plates by moving the plates against one another and heated in the pressed state. The parallel plates are preheated to temperatures of 90 "to 1300 C, preferably 100" to 110 C. The mass to be foamed is placed between the parallel plates.
After 30 to 90 seconds, the mass to be foamed has reached the expansion temperature, the plates are moved apart, and a foam sheet is obtained by expansion, the cells of which run elongated in the direction of the foam expansion.
The mass to be foamed is preferably placed between the two parallel plates in the form of foils or panels. Between the mass to be foamed and the parallel plates, a layer of a rigid material adhering to the mass is expediently introduced, which forms a composite part with the foam.
According to this embodiment, composite parts are obtained in the form of a panel, the core of which consists of the anisotropic foam according to the invention and the cover layers of the panel consist of a rigid material adhering to the foam.
If desired, at least one cover layer can be removed from the finished composite part. One or more layers of a rigid material adhering to the mass can also be introduced into the mass to be foamed.
For example, the material to be foamed in foil or sheet form can alternately be introduced and foamed in several layers on top of one another between the parallel plates with a rigid material adhering to the mass, which is also used in foil or sheet form. A composite part in sheet form is then formed which has a lower and upper cover layer, both of which can be removed if necessary, and at least one further layer of rigid material is located inside the anisotropic foam according to the invention, preferably parallel to the cover layers.
For example, metal sheets or foils, papers, kraft papers or cardboard, sheets made of glass fiber reinforced plastic, sheets or sheets made of melamine-formaldehyde resin, sheets made of wood, wood flour or wood chips, plywood, flat fabrics, knitted fabrics or fleeces made of natural and / or synthetic materials can be used as rigid material and the like can be used.
The rigid materials are expediently treated on the side facing the material to be foamed in such a way that the material to be foamed sticks to the rigid material.
A thin layer consisting of the same as the material to be foamed is advantageously applied to the side of the rigid material facing the copolymer.
The foams produced according to the invention are particularly distinguished by their cell shape. The result is foams with elongated cells, the length of the cells being several times the cell width.
The cover layers, which are located between the parallel plates and the mass to be foamed, cause the formation of an anisotropic foam with elongated cells, the cells running in the direction of the plate movement.
If necessary, these cover layers can also adhere firmly to the parallel plates during the expansion. This allows foams with cells that have an even greater ratio between cell length and cell diameter to be achieved.
Due to the chemical and mechanical resistance to deep-saturating liquids and liquefied gases, such as aliphatic hydrocarbons, ammonia, nitrogen, hydrogen, natural gas or air, the foams according to the invention are particularly well suited for insulation purposes.
The foam according to the invention is also suitable, for example, as an insulation material for tanks for low-boiling liquids.
The foams according to the invention can also be used, for example, depending on the type and number of any cover and intermediate layers, made of rigid material as a light and dimensionally stable composite component, for insulation against heat, cold and noise on facades, vehicles, aircraft and ships.
Examples
1. 200 g of copolymer were kneaded homogeneously with 6 g of vermiculite in a mixer at 50.degree. A plate was pressed from this mass at 1600 ° C. and this plate was placed in acetone until a ratio of mixed polymer to acetone of 1: 1.1 was reached. The swollen plate was set up freely until enough acetone had evaporated that a mixture / acetone ratio of 1: 0.22 had been established. This plate was then covered with a layer of cardboard each on the bottom and top and placed in a heating press, the lower and upper plates, which were parallel to one another, were preheated to 105 ° C.
The press was closed to a distance of 3.5 mm between the plates, which corresponded to the thickness of the plastic plate and the cardboard layers together. This plate spacing was maintained for 75 seconds and then suddenly widened to 50 mm.
A foam composite part according to the invention could be removed from the press, which only had cells running in the direction of expansion. In order to remove the residual acetone, the foam part was exposed to temperatures of 85 ° C. for 8 hours in a drying cabinet.
2. 200 g of the copolymer were processed together with 140 g of acetone, 6 g of vermiculite and 4 g of azoisobutyric acid dinitrile in a kneader at 50 ° C. to form a homogeneous mass.
A plate was pressed at 600 ° C., which was set up freely until a mixed polymer / acetone ratio of 1: 0.22 had been established. This plate was covered with a layer of paper on each of the two cover sides and inserted into the press preheated to 105 "C.
The thickness of the inserted plate was 3 mm, and the press was pressed together so that a plate spacing of 2 mm was established. After 60 seconds, the press was opened to a distance of 40 mm between the plates, and a foam part with exclusively elongated cells could be removed again. The foam part was treated further as in Example 1.
3. As in Example 1, a plate was pressed from mixed polymer and vermiculite and placed in methylene chloride until a ratio of mixed polymer / methylene clod of 1: 1.3 was reached. The swollen plate was set up until enough methylene chloride had evaporated until a mixed polymer / methylene chloride ratio of 1: 0.25 had been established. The plate was processed as in Example 1, with the exception that the lower and upper parallel plates were preheated to 125 "C.
