The present invention relates to the field of perfumes and aromas. More specifically, it relates to a perfuming and / or flavoring composition characterized in that it contains, as active ingredient, at least one of the diketone compounds mentioned below:
at. 5-isopropyl-nonane-2,8-dione and
b. 3. $ epoxy-5-isopropyl-nonane-2,8-dione.
It is well known that the tobacco used for the manufacture of cigarettes, for example, is essentially composed of a mixture of different types of tobacco which give the smoke the particular aroma that one wishes to obtain. For example, regular cigarettes contain mixtures of tobacco from Virginia, Maryland or
Kentucky and oriental or Turkish tobaccos, the respective proportions varying according to the particular aroma sought. However, such mixing operations are very often expensive and sometimes impossible to carry out because they depend very particularly on the availability, sometimes reduced, of certain types of tobacco.
These drawbacks can be eliminated by the use of certain synthetic chemical compounds which, by having interesting organoleptic properties, allow, by addition to tobacco bases, the reconstitution of the particular desired flavor. Therefore, it is also common in the tobacco industry to use flavoring substances and humectants, in order to improve or simply modify the flavor of said tobacco mixtures.
The present invention provides a new solution to the problem posed more particularly by the flavoring of tobacco.
We have in fact noticed that by adding at least one of the compounds defined above to a tobacco-based product, a flavored product is obtained which has an aroma having a woody character which sometimes recalls the typical note of dry leaves. , with animal and, in some cases, fruity undertones, these characters being particularly developed when the tobacco is smoked. It should be noted, however, that the characterization of taste and aroma in the field of tobacco is sometimes difficult, very often subjective, and different smokers can define the organoleptic characteristics of the same tobacco in different ways.
When the composition which is the subject of the present invention is used for flavoring tobacco, it can be incorporated during any phase of the treatment of the tobacco, but preferably after aging, drying and cutting of the tobacco. leaves and before the manufacture of cigarettes or other tobacco articles intended for smokers.
A suitable means for flavoring tobacco is by sprinkling the tobacco with an alcoholic solution of the desired flavoring composition. Mixtures of alcohol and propylene glycol can also be used as solvent.
The compositions referred to in the present invention can also be used for flavoring foods and beverages in general.
The organoleptic characteristics of the diketone compounds used as active ingredients, according to the invention, make them also useful for perfumery as perfuming ingredients capable of developing notes of the herbal type, more particularly of hay.
The proportions of said compounds used in perfuming compositions can vary over a very wide range of values. Thus, interesting effects have been obtained by incorporating said compounds into perfuming compositions at a rate of 1 to 10%.
The portions for the use of the compounds of the invention in
flavoring compositions, and more particularly for
the flavoring of tobacco, can vary between wide limits.
These proportions vary according to the desired organoleptic effect and according to the origin of the tobacco to which the flavoring ingredient is added. For example, interesting flavoring effects can be obtained with amounts of the order of 1 to 500 ppm, relative to the flavored material. Amounts of between 10 and 200 ppm are preferably used, more particularly between 10 and 50 ppm. When said compounds are used for the preparation of artificial flavors, they can be used in an amount of about 5 to 80% of the total weight of the flavoring composition.
It is understood that the limits indicated above are not absolute and lower or higher proportions can be used, in particular when special flavoring and / or perfuming effects are desired.
3,4epoxy-5-isopropyl-nonane-2,8-dione is a compound of natural origin; it was indeed isolated for the first time from a natural essential oil. This essential oil was obtained by extracting, using a volatile solvent, the aqueous distillate collected after steam stripping of a type tobacco.
Burley, the distillate having been previously acidified to approximately pH 4.
This isolation process turns out to be extremely complex and very expensive, the oil having been obtained only with a yield not exceeding 0.03% based on the weight of the treated tobacco.
The compound considered is also only one of the minor constituents of the essential oil, being found therein in a proportion of between approximately 0.0005 and 0.3%, depending on the constituent. In its pure state, this compound presents an original and original flavoring and fragrance note. This note is also very stable and perfectly reproducible, whereas that of the essential oil, resulting from the combination of flavoring and perfuming notes of a very large number of constituents, varies according to the origin of the tobacco which has been used as a product of basis for extraction, methods of extraction and purity of natural gasoline.
Thanks to its particular flavoring and perfuming properties
The aforementioned compound has a very wide field of application, clearly different from that of the essential oil, and more diverse.
By means of an original synthesis process, industrially and economically advantageous, it is now possible to make available to the aroma industry and the perfumery a practically pure compound, thus eliminating the difficulties inherent in supply and for the storage of tobacco necessary for the extraction of essential oil.
The compounds used as active ingredients, according to the present invention, can be prepared according to one of the methods indicated below. In the text below, temperatures are given in degrees centigrade.

5-isopropyl-non-3-en-2,8-dione, used above as a starting material, was prepared from 5-oxo-2-isopropyl-2hexanol according to the method described in Swiss patent N "571318. Q2 3,4-Epoxy-5-isopropyl-nonane-2,8-dione
We first prepared the ketoacetal of formula
EMI2.1
from 5-oxo-2-isopropyl-2-hexanol as indicated in Swiss patent N "571318.
A solution of 16.25 g (approx. 40 mM) of said keto-acetal in 125 ml of ether was poured over 50 min at 20-25 in a mixture of 1.14 g (30 mM) of LiAIH4 in 75 ml. ether. The reaction mixture was then left under stirring for 4 h, then the excess LiAIH4 was decomposed with the aid of wet ether and the whole poured into a concentrated aqueous solution of NH4Cl. By the usual extraction, washing, drying and evaporation treatments, 16 g of a product were obtained having the following analytical characteristics:
IR: 3450, 1050, 965 cm- ';
MS: M-15 = 227;

The compound thus obtained was dissolved in 20.4 g (100 mM) of 85% m-chloroperoxybenzoic acid in 380 ml of chloroform.
After 24 h at 200, the mixture was concentrated to dryness under reduced pressure, taken up in petroleum ether (Bp 30-50), and the organic phase washed with a 5% aqueous solution of Na2CO3 and an aqueous solution. concentrated NaCl.
After the usual treatments, 18 g of 3,4-epoxy-5-isopropyl-2-hydroxy-nonane-2-one-acetal are obtained.
This product was treated with 160 g of MnO2 (activated 20 h at 1200) in 1.41 of benzene in a nitrogen atmosphere.
After 2 days of stirring at 20, the clear filtrate was filtered and concentrated to dryness.
The residue thus obtained was treated with 2% H2SO4 in a mixture of ether / dioxane (1: 1: 1).
After ethereal extraction and washing of the organic extracts, 11 g of 3,4-epoxy-5-isopropyl-nonane2,8-dione were obtained by evaporation which, by purification using chromatography on a column of silica gel (eluent : petroleum ether / ether 1: 1 to 1: 1) the desired pure diketoepoxide was obtained.

The following example will illustrate the present invention in more detail.
Example:
Tobacco flavoring
0.5 g of a 10/00 solution of 5-isopropyl-nonane-2,8-dione in 95% methanol were dispersed over 10 g of a tobacco mixture of the American blend type. The tobacco thus flavored was then used for the manufacture of test cigarettes, the smoke of which was subjected to an organoleptic evaluation, after comparison of the latter with the smoke of control, unflavored cigarettes, the tobacco of which had been previously treated with 95% ethanol.
The requested group of experts unanimously declared that the smoke from the test cigarettes had a particularly interesting woody and animal note.
By replacing in the above example 5-isopropyl-nonane2,8-dione by 3,4-epoxy-5-isopropyl-nonane-2,8-dione, it was observed that in this case, the smoke from the test cigarettes had a slightly fruity note.
