EMI1.1
worin

Die Vergleichssubstanzen A, B,

The present invention relates to agents influencing plants which contain N-substituted chloroacetanilides as active ingredients.
The following patents should be referred to as prior art on the plant-influencing haloacetanilides that have become known to date: French patents No. 1,337,529,1 419,116, Belgian patent specification No. 746 288, US patents No. 2,863,752, 3,442,945 and 3 ft7 620 and German Offenlegungsschrift No. 1 903 198.
The object of this invention is to provide chloroacetanilides with better plant-influencing properties which, when applied in small amounts, combat a larger number of weed species and, above all, very resistant weeds, significantly better than the known haloacetanilides, but without adversely affecting the crops intended for use .
The new N-substituted chloroacetanilides to be used according to the invention have chemical structural deviations of a fundamental nature to improve the activity compared to the compounds previously known.
They correspond to formula I.
EMI1.1
wherein
R is methyl, ethyl, n-propyl or isopropyl.
The new chloroacetanilides of the formula I are prepared, for example, by adding an N-substituted aniline of the formula II
EMI1.2
with a chloroacetylating agent, preferably an anhydride or halide of chloroacetic acid. In formula II, R has the meanings given under formula I.
The following procedure illustrates the process for producing an active ingredient component. Further chloroacetanilides of the formula I are listed in the table below. Temperatures refer to degrees Celsius.
Regulation a) Production of the starting material:
A solution of 24.2 g (0.2 mol) of 2,6-dimethylaniline and 17.8 g (0.24 mol) of methoxyacetaldehyde in 150 ml of benzene is mixed with 1 ml of 25% methanolic trimethylamine solution and 5 hours below refluxed in a water separator. After evaporating the reaction mixture in vacuo, 1- (2'-methoxy-ethylideneamino) -2,6dimethylbenzene with a boiling point of 58-61 at 0.1 torr is obtained by vacuum distillation of the residue. A solution of 16.3 g (0.092 mol) of this intermediate product in 200 ml of absolute ethanol is hydrogenated with the addition of 2 g of 5% palladium carbon at 25 under normal pressure.
After filtering off the catalyst and evaporating the filtrate in vacuo, N- (2'-methoxyethyl) -2,6-xylidine with a boiling point of 64-65 / 0.2 Torr is obtained by vacuum distillation.
b) A suspension of 4.4 g of N- (2'-methoxyethyl) 2,6-xylidine and 2.6 g of potassium hydrogen carbonate in 30 ml of absolute benzene is added dropwise with a solution of 2.94 g of chloroacetyl chloride in 10 ml of benzene, whereupon the mixture is then stirred for a further 2 hours at 25. For working up, it is diluted with 100 ml of ether. After the organic phase has been washed several times with water and dried, the desired N- (2'-methoxyethyl) N- (2'-methoxyethyl) -2,6-dimethyl-chloroacetanilide (compound no. 1) is obtained pure and quantitatively by evaporating the solvent in vacuo as an oil. When left standing in the cold, the compound crystallizes; Melting point 42-45.

The active compounds to be used according to the invention are stable compounds and have very good herbicidal properties against gramineae such as millet and millet-like plants of the genera Setaria, Digitaria, Rottboellia, etc., against grasses such as lolium species and against many dicotyledon weed species such as Amaranthus, Sesbania, Chrysanthemum, Ipomoea, Sinapis , Galium, Pastinaca, without damaging the crop intended for use.
Soy, alfalfa, peas, cotton, corn, sugar beet, sugar cane, Brassica species such as rapeseed and cabbage, but also cereals such as barley and wheat or dry and water rice are mentioned as crop plants.
The agents according to the invention are applied either before or after emergence of the crop plants and the weeds and grass weeds, preferably before emergence. The application rates are between 0.1 and 10 kg of active ingredient per hectare, but with an application rate of 0.25 kg AS / ha in the pre-emergence method, extensive destruction of the weeds is achieved.
In order to prevent the weed growth of railway embankments, factories, roads, etc., up to 10 kg of active ingredient / ha is usually used.
In addition, the active ingredients of formula I also show growth-regulating properties by z. B. in existing lawn crops delay the length growth of the lawn and increase the tillering. Weeds that spread rapidly and quickly are inhibited from germination and emergence and thus removed from existing lawn crops.
As already mentioned, herbicidal haloacetanilides have become known from the literature. However, these always have a higher molecular weight alkyl radical either in the phenyl nucleus, preferably in the ortho position (at least 2 carbon atoms, preferably tertiary alkyl as in French patent specification No. 1,337,529) and / or only alkoxymethyl groups on the nitrogen atom (USPS. 3 547 620). According to this literature, it has been shown that haloacetanilides are unstable if there is no substituent with at least 2 carbon atoms in the ortho position in the phenyl nucleus, and on the other hand it is shown in the literature that the N alkoxymethyl derivatives in any case the corresponding N -Alkoxyethyl and N-alkoxypropyl derivatives are efficaciously superior (USPS 3,547,620, Example 85).
On the basis of this publication, the person skilled in the art had to regard it as established that N-substituted haloacetanilides which have alkoxy groups which are bonded to the nitrogen atom of the anilide via alkylene radicals with 2 chain links are not suitable as herbicides for practical purposes, independently whether they are unsubstituted in the phenyl nucleus or substituted by alkyl groups in the ortho position to the amino group.
It is therefore surprising that the active ingredients of the formula I, which according to USPS 3,547,620 do not have the constitution of alkoxymethylchloroacetanilides which is allegedly decisive for the beneficial effect, firstly are superior to these products in weed control and secondly are chemically stable, although they are in the phenyl nucleus carry only two ortho methyl groups.
The plants listed in the following tables with Latin generic names are the following weeds:

The comparison substances A, B,
C and E are suitable for combating grass-like weeds, but show certain weaknesses (Avena, Alopecurus, Rottboellia). They are unsuitable for the general control of broad-leaved weeds, since only Chrysanthemum and Amaranthus are damaged.
In comparison with this, the compounds according to the invention have a uniformly good effect with the best effects against all types of undesirable grasses. In addition, they also control broad-leaved weeds and thus meet the requirement placed on selective herbicides to protect crops of useful plants for the broadest possible spectrum of weeds.
Example 2

Application rates (pre-emergence method).
30 cm deep plastic tubs with an edge length of 30 x 50 cm are filled with medium-weight potting soil. The respective seed is sown on the surface of the earth and then covered with approx. 2 cm of earth and moistened. The diluted active ingredient suspension is applied within 24 hours. Concentrations are used which correspond to an application rate of 1 kg, 0.5 kg, 0.25 kg and 0.125 kg active ingredient / ha.
The dishes are kept at 22-25 ° C. and approx. 70% relative humidity.
Compound B mentioned in Example 1 and compound D = 2,6-diethyl N- (butoxyethyl) chloroacetanilide, which is mentioned in US Pat. No. 3,547,620 as a comparative compound, served as comparison compounds.
Evaluation is carried out after 20 days. The result is given as the percentage damage to the test plants in Table 2 below. The area of greater damage is shown in a more differentiated manner than the area of moderate or minor damage.

The comparison compound B is only able to ensure reliable control of the Gramineae weeds at 1 kg AS / ha or more, while the comparison compound D has a completely inadequate action and is not suitable for this use.
In contrast, the action of the compounds of the formula I against Gramineae weeds is fully guaranteed down to application rates of 0.25 kg AS / ha and in some cases up to 0.125 kg AS / ha. With this experiment it is shown that haloacetanilides of the present invention largely meet today's demand for quantitative reduction of pesticides in crops of useful plants.
Example 3
Herbicidal effects against naturally occurring
Weeds
For field trials in Switzerland, plowed and harrowed fields were sown with a row spacing of 60 cm.
The field was then divided into plots of 8 m2 each, on which around 120-150 maize plants could be expected.
One day after sowing, the plots were treated with the concentration of active substance determined for them, obtained from an emulsion concentrate by dilution.
Active ingredient B from Example 1 was used as the comparison compound.
The evaluation after 42 days related to the condition of the crop and that of the naturally emerged grasses. The damage to the plants is given in percent in Table 3 below, the area of greater damage being shown in a more differentiated manner than the area of moderate or slight damage.
It can be seen that the compound used according to the invention is superior to the known compound B in the weed action.

The agents according to the invention are prepared in a manner known per se by intimately mixing and grinding active ingredients of the general formula I with suitable carriers and / or distributing agents, optionally with the addition of dispersants or solvents which are inert towards the active ingredients. The active ingredients can be present and used in the following working-up forms: solid working-up forms:
Dusts, grit, granules, coating granules, impregnation granules and homogeneous granules; Active ingredient concentrates dispersible in water:
Wettable powders, pastes, emulsions; liquid processing forms:
Solutions.
The active ingredients are mixed with solid carriers for the production of solid forms (dusts, grit, granules). Carriers include kaolin, talc, bolus, loess, chalk, limestone, lime grit, attapulgite, dolomite, diatomaceous earth, precipitated silica, alkaline earth silicates, sodium and potassium aluminum silicates (feldspars and mica), calcium and
Magnesium sulfates, magnesium oxide, ground plastics, fertilizers such as ammonium sulfate, ammonium phosphate, ammonium nitrate, urea, ground vegetable products such as grain flour, tree bark meal, wood flour, nut shell meal, cellulose powder, residues from plant extractions, other activated charcoal, etc., individually or as mixtures Question.
The grain size of the carrier materials is expediently up to approx. 0.1 mm for dusts, approx. 0.075 to 0.2 mm for grit and 0.2 mm or more for granulates.
The active ingredient concentrations in the solid work-up forms are 0.5 to 80%.
Additives stabilizing the active substance and / or non-ionic, anion-active and cation-active substances can also be added to these mixtures, which for example improve the adhesion of the active substances to plants and parts of plants (adhesives and adhesives) and / or better wettability (wetting agents) and dispersibility (dispersants ) guarantee.
Suitable adhesives are, for example, the following: olein-lime mixture, cellulose derivatives (methyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose), hydroxyethylene glycol ethers of mono- and dialkylphenols with 5-15 ethylene oxide residues per molecule and 8-9 carbon atoms in the alkyl residue, ligninsulphonic acid, its alkali and alkaline earth metal salts, polyethylene (Carbowaxe), fatty alcohol polyglycol ethers with 5-20 ethylene oxide residues per molecule and 8-18 carbon atoms in the fatty alcohol part, condensation products of ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, polyvinylpyrrolidones, polyvinyl alcohols, condensation products of urea-formaldehyde and latex products.
Active ingredient concentrates dispersible in water, d. H.
Wettable powders, pastes and emulsion concentrates are agents that can be diluted with water to any desired concentration. They consist of active ingredient, carrier, optionally additives stabilizing the active ingredient, surface-active substances and anti-foaming agents and optionally solvents. The concentration of active ingredients in these agents is 5-80%.
The wettable powders and pastes are obtained by mixing the active ingredients with dispersants and pulverulent carriers in suitable devices until homogeneous and grinding. Suitable carriers are, for example, those mentioned above for the solid work-up forms. In some cases it is advantageous to use mixtures of different carriers.
The following can be used, for example, as dispersants: condensation products of sulfonated naphthalene and sulfonated naphthalene derivatives with formaldehyde, condensation products of naphthalene or naphthalene sulfonic acids with phenol and formaldehyde, and alkali, ammonium and alkaline earth salts of ligninsulfonic acid, further alkyl aryl sulfonates, alkali metal sulfates, alkali metal sulfates, alkali metal sulfates and alkali metal sulfates such as salts of sulfated hexadecanols, heptadecanols, octadecanols and salts of sulfated fatty alcohol glycol ethers, the sodium salt of oleyl methyl tauride, ditertiary acetylene glycols, dialkyldilaurylammonium chloride and fatty acid alkali and alkaline earth salts.
Silicones, for example, can be used as antifoam agents.
The active ingredients are mixed, ground, sieved and passed with the additives listed above in such a way that the solid portion of the wettable powders does not exceed a particle size of 0.02 to 0.04 and of the pastes 0.03 mm. To produce emulsion concentrates and pastes, dispersants such as those listed in the previous sections, organic solvents and water are used. Examples of suitable solvents are the following: alcohols, benzene, xylenes, toluene, dimethyl sulfoxide, N, N-dialkylated amides, N-oxides of amines, especially trialkylamines, and mineral oil fractions boiling in the range from 120 to 350 ". The solvents must be practical odorless, non-phytotoxic and inert to the active ingredients.
The agents according to the invention can also be used in the form of solutions. For this purpose, the active substance or several active substances of the general formula are used
I dissolved in suitable organic solvents, solvents, water or mixtures of organic solvents with water. Aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, their chlorinated derivatives, alkylnaphthalenes, mineral oils, alone or as a mixture with one another, can be used as organic solvents.
The solutions should contain the active ingredients in a concentration range of 1 to 20%. These solutions can be applied either with the help of a propellant gas (as a spray) or with special syringes (as an aerosol).
Other biocidal active ingredients or agents can be admixed with the agents according to the invention described. Thus, in addition to the compounds of general formula I mentioned, the new agents can, for example, be insecticides, fungicides,
Contains bactericides, fungistats, bacteriostats or nematocides to broaden the spectrum of activity. The funds according to the invention can also be plant fertilizers,
