Abstract
Reflective glass Spheroids are incorporated in a road surface to warn motorists of hazards, their intensity being increased at say danger zones, bends or junctions. The reflective particles are either pref. incorporated in the concrete or asphalt carriageway wearing course mix, or they may be rolled or otherwise inserted into the surface, or bonded to the surface by a suitable adhesive. The application to a straight road may involve spaced longitudinal lines (1) of particles which gradually increased in number approaching an accident black spot. There may be similar lines (4) running transverse to the road direction increasing in intensity on the approaches to a crossroads (5) and a similar by random intensification on a sharp bend.
Description

The present invention relates to a method for coating a roadway, as well as to a roadway coated by applying said method.
This process consists in giving the surface of the roadway light-reflecting properties having a variable reflecting power along said surface, so as to create therein zones having a greater reflecting power than others.
The roadway obtained by applying said method has a surface capable of reflecting light in a way the intensity of which varies with the location.
This makes it possible to increase the visibility of certain parts of a roadway and to signal danger zones there at night, for example on airstrips, at crossroads or in bends.
This result can be obtained by mixing with a mass of asphalt or cement and gravel coating reflective particles in greater or lesser quantity, that is to say in percentage varying according to the desired effect.
It is also possible to disperse a reflective material on the asphalt or the cement when laying these materials.
Strong adhesives containing suspended reflective material can also be applied to the pavement.
As reflective material, crushed glass or round or faceted reflective beads of desired caliber can be used, for example. It is also possible to use certain crystals, certain plastics, in balls, scales, poundings, etc., of the desired size.
The appended drawing represents three embodiments of the object of the invention, given by way of example.
The first embodiment according to FIG. 1 relates to an airstrip or a straight roadway requiring the marking, at night, of a danger zone, or to which, for one reason or another, special attention must be paid.
At 1, laterally and in the center, reflective bands are provided occupying only part of the width of said track or road, bands whose reflective power or frequency can also increase in the direction of arrow 2, up to the place that you particularly want to point out. This is in 3 and constitutes a zone reflecting the light in a more intense way.
The second embodiment, according to FIG. 2, relates to a crossroads, at the approach of which the roadway is made more and more reflective, in 4, to reach a maximum density, in 5, at the place of intersection proper.
The third embodiment according to FIG. 3 shows a curve, at the approach of which the roadway is made reflective on either side, at 6, to pass through a maximum of 7 in the curve itself.
CLAIMS
I. A method of coating a roadway consisting in giving the surface of the roadway light-reflecting properties having a variable reflecting power along said surface, so as to create therein zones having a reflecting power greater than others.
II. Roadway obtained by applying the method according to claim I, characterized in that it has a surface capable of reflecting light in a way whose intensity varies with the location.
SUB-CLAIMS
1. Method according to claim I, characterized in that particles of reflective material are mixed with the mass of asphalt or cement and gravel covering the roadway.
2. Method according to claim I, characterized in that a reflective material is applied by dispersion on the asphalt or the cement forming the pavement coating.
3. Method according to claim I, characterized in that a strong adhesive is applied to the roadway containing reflective material in suspension.
