Abstract
Surface water and industrial waste water, contaminated with suspended solids, are cleared by adding to the water, at pH 7-8, a granular mineral clearing additive at not 10 vol. times the suspended matter present in the water, treating the water with coagulants and chain polymer polyelectrolytes, transporting the water to a reactor in which a dynamic sheet of slime can be formed at the flow rate required for clearing the treated water, separating the cleared water, and separating the slurry which comes from the clearing reactor, and consists mainly of suspended impurities and the granular clearing additive, in a suitable appts. eg a hydrocyclone battery, recycling the clearing additive, compacting the suspended impurities to a high density, and if wished adding a combustible material, to render the treated slime combustible. Pure water, of good and constant quality is obtd. The process is independent of variations in the quality of the water to be treated, in the temp. and in the operation. The volume of slime is reduced, and the slime is suitable for further treatment. The water loss is low. The residue time of the untreated water is short.
