The invention relates to a method for continuous
Decolorization and purification of wastewater containing dyes, such as those that arise in particular in textile finishing plants, also in the paper and photo industry and in the dyestuff-producing industry. Experience has shown that certain wastewater from dyeing and printing plants is often not completely or only with expensive means, e.g. B. by adding chemicals or treating with activated charcoal, can be decolorized, while the usual processing methods (aerobic biodegradation, flocculation) only eliminate some of the dyes.
The invention now proposes a process for decolorizing and purifying wastewater containing dyes, which can be carried out continuously and which eliminates the disadvantages of the known processes. According to the invention, this consists in that the wastewater is initially mixed with alkaline substances in order to set a pH value in the alkaline range, then brought into contact with finely divided metallic aluminum for the purpose of reductive destruction of the dyes, neutralized by adding acid, the aluminum flocculating as hydroxide and Finally, for the purpose of clarification, the hydroxide sludge is subjected to sedimentation and flotation.
The adjustment of the pH value of the wastewater can be done by adding caustic alkali or by mixing it with strongly alkaline wastewater, as is the case in the pretreatment of textiles, e.g. B. in the case of alkaline boiling or mercerizing, occur. The waste water can be adjusted to a pH value in the range of 12-14 at room temperature or 10.5-13 at 50 ° C.
For the purposes of the invention, metallic aluminum is pure aluminum or z. B. understood aluminum alloyed with copper or silicon, preferably turning chips, milling and grinding outlets, which form a large surface, can be used. Raw aluminum waste from aluminum production or from foundries can also be used. It has been shown that metallic aluminum in chip and semolina form is more suitable than aluminum powder, which can lead to flotation, which considerably reduces the effect. When the metallic aluminum comes into contact with certain dyes in waste water, the reductive destruction of the same occurs through the nascent hydrogen or possibly also through direct action: AL AL + 3e.
The neutralization of the waste water can be done with waste acid, e.g. B. sulfuric acid or with acidic operating wastewater. The Al (OH) 3 precipitated in the process holds not only the degradation products of the dyes but also a considerable part of the dissolved organic pollutants by adsorption, so that in addition to the discoloration, the wastewater is also partially cleaned. The aluminum hydroxide can be flocculated by adding flocculants, i.e. H. high molecular weight organic substances are favored.
The wastewater can now be clarified in such a way that it, together with the flocculation, is fed to a regional wastewater treatment facility and clarified together with the other wastewater. The sewage sludge containing the aluminum hydroxide can be used as fertilizer in agriculture after suitable post-treatment. However, it is also possible, after the aluminum hydroxide has flocculated, to direct the wastewater into a special settling basin and only then to feed it to the wastewater treatment facility. The deposited flocculation can be thickened using filter presses or centrifuges and processed to reclaim the aluminum.
The inventive method can be used particularly successfully in the degradation of reactive dyes for textiles, the removal of which from the wastewater has previously presented particular difficulties.
example
Dye-containing wastewater from a textile finishing company is adjusted to a pH of approx. 12 in a large iron tank with a capacity of approx. 100 m3 by adding used mercerising liquor. The container contains approx. 500 kg of aluminum turnings in a loose filling. The wastewater is kept in motion by means of a circulation pump. The development of hydrogen in the form of a fine-blasted foam begins. After a few hours, the discoloration has progressed so far that the liquid can be drained into a second container and neutralized by adding waste acid. The resulting aluminum hydroxide adsorbs a considerable part of the organic products contained in the wastewater.
The neutralized, largely decolorized wastewater is then fed to the primary clarifier of a biological wastewater treatment plant.
