The object of the present invention is an accounting installation for the payment of purchases made in self-service stores and in multiple branches, in which each customer, identified by an account number, holds a capital deposited or for the benefit of '' a credit for his purchases, the account number and the amount of capital or credit being recorded on a card presented by the customer during each purchase.
Its main purpose is to simplify and accelerate the purchase payment transactions made by customers.
Its more general aim is to prevent the course of the evolution of the policy of such enterprises from passing through systems of credit sales such as certain known systems which pose extremely complex problems in the field of information processing. and more particularly in determining the solvency of clients.
The installation according to the invention is characterized by the fact that it comprises a central computer, means for recording, in this computer, each account number and the amount of capital or credit associated with this number, and transmit to the calculator, during a purchase, the account number and the total amount of the purchase made, and in that the calculator is designed to make the difference between the amount of capital or credit associated with the transmitted number and the total amount of the purchase, and to record this difference as a new amount of capital or credit associated with this number, said means being further arranged so as to allow this difference to be carried over to the card presented.
In the event that the customer pays a certain amount of capital, it is no longer the store which gives credit to the customer, but the latter who trusts the store. It is obvious that customers will be attracted to companies applying this process to the extent that they will benefit from a special advantage which could be constituted, for example, by an interest rate higher than that enjoyed by a conventional saver.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the installation according to the invention.
Fig. I is a schematic view.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the cash register.
Fig. 3 is a view of a punched card.
The installation shown includes (fig. 1) a computer A, placed in a central unit, cash registers B distributed among the various self-service stores and teleprocessing links between computer A and cash registers B.
The installation also includes punched cards C (fig. 3), intended to be given to the company's customers against payment of a certain sum.
These cards bear the name and address of their holder in clear, as well as a serial number and the account number in code; and, at the top of five columns, the following information: store, date, position, purchase, balance.
When a card is handed over to its holder, the amount paid or the credit granted is printed at the top of the position column.
The computer A is arranged so as to be able to memorize the sums paid by each customer and thus constitute a central file, to receive from each store by the teleprocessing line information relating to the purchases made by the customer, to determine if the amount of each purchase is covered by the capital or the available credit, in the affirmative calculate the new capital or the new credit after deduction of the amount of the purchase, finally transmit by the teleprocessing line to the store concerned information relating to this new capital, or this new credit .
The cash register B comprises a traditional keyboard 5, a window 6 in which the tipped amounts are displayed, a slot 7 in which the receipt 8 is presented, a cash drawer 9, a slot 10 intended to receive cards C from buyers.
Each cash register is arranged so as to be able, after introduction of any card C into the slot 10, to transmit to the computer information allowing the latter to identify the account of the card holder, to print in the column position the capital or the available credit that the computer communicates to it via the teleprocessing line, calculate the total amount of the purchase, print it in the purchase column, send it to the computer, print the difference calculated and transmitted by the computer in the balance column, and eject the card after printing this balance.
The computer A and the cash registers B are furthermore arranged so as to allow the cashier to check the operation of the installation and to be immediately notified of any errors or operating faults.
To this end, the fund includes, in addition to the bodies already mentioned:
- means not shown making it possible to block the keys of the numeric keypad,
- a key marked OUT, 11, allowing the blocked keys to be unlocked and the operation of the cash register to be completely independent,
- a key 12 marked O allowing a signal to be sent to the computer giving it the order to reset the requested count to zero,
- a key 13 marked OB allowing the keys of the numeric keypad to be unlocked (these three keys are normally locked),
- a warning light 14 marked IN, illuminating in continuous green or in flashing green if the card is respectively correctly or incorrectly inserted in slot 10,
- an indicator 15 marked OFF LINE)> lights up in yellow if the teleprocessing line is
busy,
- a LED marked RETYPE, flashing white if the cashier has to retype the purchase,
a warning light 17 illuminating red if the installation is faulty,
an indicator light 18 illuminating in flashing orange if the account is blocked,
an indicator 19 illuminating in flashing red for example, if the purchase amount exceeds the available amount.
These two indicator lights are recessed so that they are visible only to the cashier.
The described installation operates normally as follows:
1. The customer, while going through the cash register with the items purchased, presents her card to the cashier who inserts it into the slot 10, the indicator light 14 lights up continuously green.
2. The cashier types the amounts of the items, amounts that are entered on a receipt, as well as the total.
3. When the cashier presses the total key, the cash register automatically sends the computer via the teleprocessing line a stream of information containing the number of the cardholder's account and the amount of the purchase.
4. In possession of this information, the calculator determines the position of the account, calculates the difference between the available and the purchase amount, records this difference as new available.
5. The computer sends to the cash register via the teleprocessing line an information stream containing the available account before the purchase and the new position.
6. In possession of this information, the cash register prints on the card the name of the store in the first column, the date in the second, the available in the position column, the amount of the purchase in the purchase column, and the difference. in the balance column.
This sequence of operations may present the following anomalies:
a) The card is incorrectly inserted or damaged: indicator light 14 flashes, the keys of the numeric keypad are blocked automatically. In this case, the cashier withdraws the card, reinserts it correctly or introduces a new one given to her by the customer.
This new entry, if it is carried out correctly, unblocks the keys of the numeric keypad and causes the indicator to light in solid green.
b) The teleprocessing line is busy, indicator light 15 lights up yellow, the total key on the numeric keypad is blocked automatically. As soon as the line is free, indicator light 15 goes out and the total key is released.
c) The account is blocked, for example, at the request of the account holder, who has lost his card (it is then assumed that the person presenting a card from this account is using it illicitly).
As soon as the information is transmitted to the cash register, the indicator light 18 flashes, the numeric keys are automatically locked and button 13 is unlocked. In this case, the cashier settles the question with the store management and then presses key 13, which unlocks the keys on the numeric keypad, turns off the light and ejects the card. In any case, the account is debited.
d) The account shows an unauthorized overflow. As soon as the information has been transmitted to the cash register, the indicator light 19 flashes, the numeric keys are automatically locked and button 12 is unlocked. The excess is printed in red in the balance column. The card is ejected.
In this case, the cashier resolves the problem with the customer, for example by taking back part of the items, or by collecting, in cash, the equivalent of the overrun, but in any case by bringing the account to zero. To do this, she may also have to return money to the customer - reinserts the card, presses the total key, then the 12 key, which unlocks the number keys, resets the account to zero, turns off the light 19 and ejects the card.
e) The transmission of information does not take place correctly, for example as a result of an error on the part of the cashier (handling error for example) or an external cause disturbing the information (interference on the teleprocessing line for example) warning light 16 comes on. In this case, the cashier presses the total key, which transmits the same information and turns off indicator 16.
f) The installation is faulty, indicator light 17 comes on, the numeric keys are locked automatically and key 1 1 is unlocked. In this case, the cashier presses button 11, which unlocks the numeric keys and allows the collection of purchases to continue on the internal-cash register circuit, the card is unstuck, which allows the cashier to withdraw it, to read the last balance, to tip it, to print the previous balance in the position column, to deduct the total of this report, to print the real balance in the balance, to temporarily do without the calculator because it is necessary to keep all the cards of the customers to then debit them globally, to unlock the cash drawer.
