The present invention relates to a method for modifying bituminous building materials by adding a rubber material and, in particular, to a method for modifying asphalt to produce materials for road surfaces.
The surface course of roads and country roads is usually produced by means of bituminous paving, which contains a stone material that is bound by bitumen, either by spreading the stone material and the asphalt separately from one another or by mixing the stone material and asphalt before spreading to form an asphalt concrete .
It is already known to modify the binding agent for the stone material in order to obtain certain desired properties of the pavement. Such properties are, for example, good cohesion and adhesion, so that the separation of the stone material from the asphalt is prevented, high elasticity to prevent cracking and low temperature sensitivity, so that softening and exudation are prevented.
The modifiers that give the best results in this regard are based on gum in various forms.
The mixing of the rubber with the asphalt has been accomplished in many different ways and in many different states of the rubber. The asphalt was mixed with non-vulcanized rubber in the form of a powder, regenerated old rubber or the like. In these forms the rubber does not dissolve significantly in the asphalt and therefore the modifying effect is small in relation to the amount of modifier added. The rubber was also added in the form of a VullkanisaXts, but due to the elastic state of the rubber it was not possible to dissolve the rubber in the asphalt, so that the modifying effect was also low in this case when economically justifiable amounts of modifier were added.
In order to facilitate the mixing of the rubber with the asphalt, the rubber was also added in the form of solutions in organic solvents, which has given unsatisfactory results, and in the form of a latex, which has given the best modifying effect in relation to the amount of rubber added. From these results it can be concluded that the fastest and most careful mixing is achieved when the modifier is added to the asphalt in plastic form and consists of relatively small molecules.
However, if small amounts of modifying agent are used, it is necessary that the modifying agent consists of relatively large molecules if a high modifying effect is to be achieved. For this reason, degraded rubber molecules from regenerated scrap rubber have a lower modifying effect than the same type of rubber that does not have degraded molecular structures and therefore the rubber in the final road surface should be vulcanized to give the best effect.
Accordingly, there is an inverse relationship between the requirement for a small molecule size and plasticity of the modifier to facilitate mixing and the requirement for a large molecule size and / or great elasticity to achieve the best modifying effect of the modifier in the final pavement. As already mentioned above, the best results were achieved when the modifying agent is added in the form of a latex, which is either added directly to the mixer with the asphalt compound or is used to produce a modified asphalt, which is diluted to the desired modification effect by unmodified asphalt and then is fed to the asphalt compound mixer.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a method for modifying bituminous materials, preferably asphalt, for road surfaces, by means of which the above requirements can be met and both a quick and precise mixing and a good modification effect can be achieved.
The method according to the invention for modifying bituminous building materials, in particular asphalt for road surfaces, is characterized in that a vulcanizable, low-polymer, liquid or semi-liquid rubber material is added to the bituminous material, that the rubber material is intimately mixed with the bituminous material that a vulcanizing agent is added to the mixture and that the rubber material is vulcanized in place.
The <(low polymer, liquid or semi-liquid rubber material has a lower molecular weight than natural rubber and should be as free of solvents and water as possible. The molecular weight should be so low that the rubber material can be easily mixed with hot asphalt, for example by Melting: While natural rubber has a Mooney viscosity (ML 4, 100 ° C.) of 48 to 65, the Mooney viscosity of the rubber material used according to the invention should preferably be around 40 (ML 4, 1000Cr.
According to a preferred embodiment of the method according to the invention, the rubber material can be mixed with the bituminous material in the monomeric state and then, e.g. by on-site polymerization, converted into the low-polymer, liquid or semi-liquid state.
The rubber material is added to the asphalt in the non-vulcanized state, preferably in the form of a waxy mass or a syrupy liquid, which can be mixed quickly and carefully with the asphalt, and then vulcanized to the asphalt compound by adding a vulcanizing agent. Both the rubber and the vulcanizing agent can be added directly to the asphalt compound mixer.
According to a further preferred embodiment of the invention, the asphalt is modified by polychloroprene (neoprene), for example Neoprene FC, sold by du Pont. The neoprene rubber is fed to the asphalt compound mixer in an unvulcanized and semi-liquid state. The temperature of the asphalt compound should usually be 150 to 160 C, and an amount of rubber of 11.4 to 5% by weight is usually suitable. Due to the fact that the rubber is in the form of small molecules and in a plastic state, a uniform and thorough mixture can be obtained easily and quickly.
After mixing, the rubber is vulcanized with a vulcanizing agent consisting of 9 parts of zinc oxide, 13 parts of petroleum oil (Sundex 53 type), 3 parts of diorthotolylguanidine, 4 parts of monoethanolamine and 2 parts of phenylalphanaphthylamine, based on 100 parts of the rubber. The vulcanizing agent can also be added directly to the asphalt mixer and it is not necessary to use special equipment for carrying out the method according to the invention. The relatively small rubber molecules are connected in the usual way by crosslinking to form larger rubber molecules when they are vulcanized, u. the modifying effect of these large molecules is large in relation to the amount of modifying agent used.
