The present invention relates to a bondable polyolefin and a method for its production.
In contrast to polyvinyl chloride, molded articles made of non-polar polyolefin, e.g. B. made of polyethylene, not glued, but only weldable.
In contrast to the gluing of pipes made of polyvinyl chloride, which can be carried out without any problems and does not produce any rejects, the welding of pipes made of polyethylene is not only time-consuming, but also requires greater care if the welded joint is to meet the standard requirements for strength and tightness.
In order to remedy the disadvantage that non-polar polyethylene cannot be glued, there are already a number of chemical or physical pretreatment processes for polyethylene, namely:
1. the treatment of polyethylene with chlorine gas, 2. the halogenation of polyethylene,? .. the treatment of polyethylene with ozone and chromosulfuric acid,
4. the flaming of the polyethylene,
5. allowing corona discharges to take effect,
6. The treatment of the polyethylene by the electro contact method.
These known chemical and physical processes have various disadvantages; above all, they require a great deal of time and additional costs.
In addition, the mentioned pretreatment processes can often only be carried out with sufficient precision on construction sites with unfavorable working conditions, since either there are tight spaces or unfavorable temperatures or only poorly trained personnel are available. However, the quality of an adhesive bond carried out after one of the aforementioned pretreatment processes depends on the care with which the surfaces to be bonded have been pretreated.
Attempts to create a bondable polyolefin that can be bonded without using any of the aforementioned pretreatment methods. failed to this day.
It is therefore a very important technical and economic advance to provide a bondable polyolefin that can be bonded without the use of the aforementioned time-consuming and additional cost-causing preparatory processes and that ensures a foolproof and extremely low-waste production of bonded connections of high quality and durability.
According to the invention, non-polar polyolefin is combined with ionomer. Here and in the following, an ionomeric ethylene polymer should preferably be considered under ionomer.
In the case of the polyolefin according to the invention, non-polar polyethylene is combined with ionomeric ethylene polymer. Moldings produced according to the invention consist of non-polar polyolefin in plate or tube shape with one or both sides or inside and / or outside coating with ionomeric ethylene polymer or a mixture of non-polar polyolefin and ionomeric ethylene polymer.
Moldings made according to the invention from gluable polyolefin consist of an extrudable mixture of non-polar polyethylene and ionomeric ethylene polymer in a weight ratio of 50:50 to 25:75. According to the process according to the invention for the production of bondable polyolefin, non-polar polyolefin is mixed with ionomeric ethylene polymer and extruded, or non-polar polyolefin is first extruded and then either the ionomeric ethylene polymer is used alone or in a mixture with non-polar polyolefin and this is applied to the previously extruded non-polar polyolefin on. The ionomeric ethylene polymer is applied in layer form to the previously extruded non-polar polyolefin either alone or in a mixture with non-polar polyolefin.
To prepare the mixture, z. B. non-polar polyethylene and ionomeric ethylene polymer and mixes in a weight ratio of 50:50 to 25:75.
To produce moldings from the polyolefin according to the invention with a surface that can be glued in sheet or tube form, either two extruders with one slot each or a so-called double extruder with at least two slots, with non-polar polyolefin extruding through one slot and the other or
the other slots are extruded ionomeric ethylene polymer alone or in a mixture with non-polar polyolefin and then apply the ionomeric ethylene polymer or the mixture of non-polar polyolefin and ionomeric ethylene polymer as a layer or layers on the non-polar polyolefin. The extruded ionomeric ethylene polymer or the mixture of non-polar polyolefin and ionomeric ethylene polymer is passed over rollers coated with the branded product TEFLON of a take-off device after extrusion.
Various customary additives, such as pigments, antistatic agents, antioxidants and antibacterial agents, can of course also be added to the polyolefin. etc. are added.
Moldings according to the invention made of polyolefin with a bondable surface can, in contrast to the usual polyolefins, with an adhesive, e.g. B. an epoxy adhesive, especially the branded product ARALDIT, with each other or with other materials, e.g. B. metals, plastics are glued.
Three implementation examples of the method according to the invention are explained in more detail below. the description of the second and third example, since it is to be carried out analogously to the first. done summarily.
example 1
17 kg of polyethylene with a bulk density of 0.950 to 0.953 and a melt index between 1.6 to 2.4 are mixed with 51 kg of anhydrous ionomeric ethylene polymer with a specific weight of 0.928 and a melt index of 1.5 g / 10 minutes with the addition of 1 to 2% of a colored pigment dry mixed. then dried in a drying cabinet for at least six hours and then extruded at a temperature of 205 to 2100 Celsius. The extrudate leaving a slot nozzle is then pressed between rollers of a take-off device covered with the branded product TEFLON to form a strip of constant thickness, a cutting device being expediently provided in order to produce a strip of constant width.
The above mixture of 17 kg of non-polar polyethylene and 51 kg of ionomeric ethylene polymer can be extruded perfectly at the stated temperature range, provided that the ionomeric ethylene polymer, which is hygroscopic per se, is completely anhydrous; a very sticky mixture results at this temperature, which is why the Teflon coating of the roller surface to achieve a smooth, i.e. H. homogeneous surface of the extruded tape is unavoidable.
A sample of this mixture of non-polar polyethylene and ionomeric ethylene polymer prepared in this way was glued to a plate made of pure aluminum. which was previously degreased with acetone and then roughened with a grinding wheel. An epoxy resin with a hardener was used as the adhesive. 100 parts of the epoxy adhesive AW 106 are mixed with 80 parts of an amine hardener. z. B. HV 953 U mixed and used immediately, as the pot life of the mixture is about 1 hour. With this mixture and at a temperature of 100 Celsius, the hardening of the glue joint takes about 30 minutes. If you take an anhydride hardener instead of the amine hardener and add an accelerator, the hardening of the glue joint at 1300 Celsius is complete after 10 minutes.
The hardening of the adhesive joint was carried out on the test piece in a drying cabinet and resulted in a tensile shear strength of the adhesive joint which was greater than that of the extruded mixture of non-polar polyethylene and ionomeric ethylene polymer.
The mixture was extruded in a screw extruder from Maillefer SA, Renens, at a temperature of 205 to 2100 Celsius. The width of the slot die of the extruder was adjusted to result in a ribbon 13 cm wide and about 3 millimeters thick.
The distance between the outlet nozzle of the extruder and the first pair of rollers of the haul-off device was 42 cm and the number of revolutions of the screw was 15 rpm.
In this way, practically all conventional polyethylene products can be produced on commercially available screw or blown extruders; however, the production of thin foils and complex solid profiles is uneconomical.
The polyethylene obtained in the manner described with a bondable surface is similar in its chemical and physical properties to the non-polar polyethylene; it is homogeneous and visually indistinguishable from non-polar polyethylene, it is pigmentable and inert to most solvents, oils, acids, bases and salt solutions. It can also be used safely in contact with food.
It is important not to be underestimated that the polyethylene with a bondable surface can be stored for practically unlimited periods without losing its bondability.
Example 2
21 kg of non-polar polypropylene were mixed dry with 58 kg of ionomeric ethylene polymer, dried in a drying cabinet for at least six hours and then extruded at 2150 Celsius. The same extruder and take-off device as mentioned in Example 1 were used.
This extrudate can also be glued with the epoxy adhesive mentioned.
Example 3
23 kg of unpolate polybutylene were mixed with 62 kg of ionomeric ethylene polymer, dried for at least six hours in a drying cabinet and extruded with the addition of 1 to 2% pigment. The same extruder and the same haul-off device as mentioned in embodiment 1 were used. This extrudate can also be glued with the epoxy adhesive mentioned.
