générale (I) dans laquelle R désigne le radical R'- S - CH2-,

The cosmetic composition according to the invention generally contains a mixture of compounds of formula (I) in which the number of-CH2-CHOH-CQ-O-j units is variable around a mean statistical value equal to n.
In addition. in these mixtures. the R radicals can be the same or different.
For the majority. the compounds of formula (I) are in the form of more or less consistent pastes, the properties of which differ according to the nature of the radical R, of the intermediate ether group. thioether or hydroxymethylene when they exist and the degree of polymerization n.
These are surfactants and, depending on the case, foaming agents. wetting. thickeners, peptizers or emulsifiers.
Their water solubility is obtained with a relatively low degree of polymerization n.
So. for example, the products for which the lipophilic part consists of 11 to 14 carbon atoms are remarkable foaming agents in comparison with conventional nonionic compounds, and this for values of n which are appreciably lower.
With longer hydrocarbon chains, we rather obtain thickening or emulsifying products. Emulsifiers of this type are more particularly effective for polar oils and similar products.
The very nature of the hydrophilic groups of these nonionic compounds also allows very good compatibility with concentrated solutions of alkalis, a property which allows their use in the textile industry. for example for mercerization.
The compositions according to the present invention are intended for use in cosmetics, in particular as shampoos, hair dyes. these compositions generally containing the products of formula (I) in a proportion of
I to 80% and preferably 3 to 25%.
The compositions according to the present invention can also be provided in the formula of dispersions and emulsions, in particular polar oils, more especially in oil-in-water form. As examples of polar oils, mention may be made of vegetable oils such as peanut oil,
Castor oil; the triglycerides of fatty acids such as those of octanoic and decanoic acids; fatty alcohols such as 2-octyl-1-dodecanol; alkyl esters of fatty acids such as those of adipic, myristic or palmitic acids; solvents such as chlorobenzene.
Oil-in-water emulsions can contain 10 to 60 O / o of oil, 5 to 20 O / o of emulsifier and 30 to 80 O / o of water.
The polyhydroxylated nonionic compounds of formula (I) can also be used to disperse alkaline earth soaps and in particular calcium and magnesium soaps. They can therefore be used in foam baths to avoid the troublesome action of alkaline earth soaps.
Per gram of soap to be dispersed, 0.02-1 g and preferably 0.1-0.2 g of compounds of formula (I) are used in 100 ml of a 400 ppm solution of calcium chloride.
The test used to demonstrate this property is the one proposed by J. Alba Mendoza and C. Gomez
Herrera at the 5th International Detergents Congress in Barcelona in 1968.
The table below indicates, for a few compounds of formula (I). the preparation of which appears in the examples described below, the minimum quantities Q (in milligrams) necessary to disperse under the test conditions described by Alba Mendoza 50 mg of sodium oleate in 50 ml of water of a hardness corresponding to a content of 400 ppm of calcium chloride.
Sodium lauryl sulfate shown in the table was chosen as a control because it represents the average dispersant type for alkaline earth soaps.

The compositions, dispersions and emulsions can be packaged in an aerosol can. They can also ren
closing various adjuvants, for example other surfactant compounds.
The compounds of formula (I) can be obtained by means of the process described in Swiss patent N 531999 and in particular as described below:
1. Preparation of a mixture of compounds of formula (I) in which R denotes a mixture of alkyl radicals com
carrying 9 to 12 carbon atoms, n represents a value
average statistic of 3.5 by polycondensation of glycidol
on a mixture of C11-C14 α-diols sold by the Company
Archer Daniels Midland, Minneapolis (USA) under the name of
ADOL 114.
A 54 g of the mixture of the above-mentioned diols having a hy index
520 droxide 3.75 ml of a methylate solution are added
sodium in methanol at a concentration of 4.6 meq / g
(milliequivalent / gram). We heat up to temperature
from 155 ° C., eliminating the methanol and the mixture is introduced, drop
per drop over 70 minutes 72 g of glycidol (0.87 equi
are equivalent to epoxy).
The product thus obtained is a thick and brown oil by
readily soluble in water and soda 40%. Point
of Kraft for a solution at 1 Olo is less than 10o C. The
cloud point for a 0.5% solution is greater than
100O C, both in demineralized water and in water containing
10 Nazi oxo.
Foam heights measured using the
Ross-Miles for concentrations of 0.05%, 0.2% and 0.5%
at 350 C in hard water are respectively 13 cm, 18.5 cm
and 20 cm.
Applied as a 5 u / o aqueous solution in the eyes of
rabbits, the product is absolutely harmless.
2. Preparation of a mixture of compounds of formula (I)
in which R denotes a mixture of alkyl radicals com
carrying 13 to 16 carbon atoms, n represents a value
average statistic of 3.1 by polycondensation of glycidol
on a mixture of C1-C10 α-diols, sold by the Company
Archer Daniels Midland as ADOL 158.
A 43 g of mixture of the aforementioned diols having a hy index
droxyl 430, 1 ml of methylate solution is added
sodium in methanol at a concentration of 4.6 meq / g and at
1550 C, drop by drop, over 105 minutes, 38 g of
glycidol.
The product obtained is soluble in water with a
very slight opalescence.
The Kraft point is less than 00 C.
The cloud point for a 0.5% solution is greater
at 1000 C both in demineralized water and in water
containing 10% of Nazi.
3. Preparation of a mixture of compounds of formula
general (I) in which R denotes the radical R'- S - CH2-,
R 'representing a mixture of chain alkyl radicals
straight and branched in Cts-Clo of which about 14% of methyl-2
alkanols and sold by the Shell Company under the name Doba
nol 25, n represents an average statistical value of 2.5.
In a first stage, the alkyl thioethers of
glycerol by reaction of the above-mentioned mixture of alcohols on the medium
thane sulfochloride, then condensation of thioglycerol in
alkaline medium.
205 g (1 mole) of Dobanol 25 are mixed with 101 g of triethylamine in 250 ml of benzene and the mixture is introduced in
90 minutes at 30-40çC 114g (1 mole) of methane sulfochlo
rure. After 1 hour of additional stirring, the reaction rate is 97.5%.
After filtration of the triethylamine hydrochloride,
adds the stochiometric amount of sodium thio derivative
glycerol in a nitrogen atmosphere. We carry the reaction medium
at 100 ° C., partially removing the benzene and adding 30 ml of methanol during the reaction to avoid thickening of the reaction mass.
The alkyl thioglycerol is then released with 100 ml of water, decanted and then dried under vacuum up to a temperature of 100 ° C.
To 65 g (0.2 mol) of the product thus obtained, 2 ml are added.
of methanolic solution of sodium methoxide at 4.6 meq / g.
It is heated to a temperature of 1550 C and introduced,
drop by drop, over 90 minutes, 0.5 mole of glycidol.
The thioether thus prepared can be oxidized to sulfoxide with stoichiometric amounts of hydrogen peroxide in the presence of 0.5% acetic acid, giving a water soluble product.
Its 1% Kraft point is 190 C. Its hole point
ble at 0.5% is 800 C in demineralized water and 680 C in water containing 10 / o NaCl.
Foam heights measured using the
Ross-Miles, at 350 C in hard water, are respectively
10.5 cm, 16.5 cm and 18 cm for concentrations of 0.05 O / o, 0.2 / o and 0.5 / o.
