Q = UC
C = 0,0085K-5

Q = 0,0885I(U
e = 00885KU S =K
Electrophysical method for determining the average thickness
a protective layer of dielectric nature covering a metal surface and installation for implementing the method
The present invention relates to an electrophysical method for determining the average thickness of a dielectric layer covering a metal surface as well as an installation for carrying out the method.
The method according to the invention is applicable in a wide variety of fields. For example, in the aerosol industry, the packaging of commonly used solutions is carried out in metal containers.
For the good conservation of these solutions, the containers are covered internally with a layer of resin thus avoiding any contact between the solution and the metal.
It is important to know how to control the amount of this covering and in particular to know quantitatively, on the one hand, the size of the pores passing through the layer of varnish, and on the other hand, the thickness thereof. A very general method for determining the through porosity of a dielectric layer covering a metal surface is already known from Swiss Patent No. 520331 of the holder, according to which the electroplating of at least one layer is carried out on the unprotected surface. at least one of the components of an electrophoretic varnish, said component not being a conductor after its electrodeposition, and the surface area of the deposition layer is determined by measuring the amount of current consumed.
The present invention relates to a method for determining the average thickness of this dielectric layer, this method being applicable, optionally, in combination with the method which is the subject of Swiss patent No. 520331.
This electrophysical method for determining the average thickness of a protective layer of dielectric character covering a metal surface is characterized in that the charge accumulated in a capacitor consisting of a known portion of said metal surface, the dielectric, is measured. formed by the protective layer, the electrolyte covering said layer, and at least one electrode in contact with said electrolyte.
The subject of the invention is also an installation for implementing the method, characterized in that it comprises a current source with stabilized direct voltage, a timing device determining the duration of the application of the voltage to the terminals. of said capacitor and a device for measuring and integrating the discharge current of the capacitor.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the installation for implementing the method according to the invention.
Fig. 1 schematically represents this installation.
Fig. 2 is a diagram of the charging and discharging voltage and current.
The installation shown in the drawing comprises a source of direct current at stabilized voltage 1, for example a rectifier connected to the mains, delivering a stabilized voltage whose value is between 20 and 100 volts.
The positive pole of the rectifier is connected by a timing device 2 triggering the voltage source after a given time. In series with this timing device is placed a shunt 3, across which are connected in parallel, two integrators 4 and 6.
The integrator 4 is associated with a display instrument 5 for measuring the permeability of the dielectric layer deposited electrophoretically on a metal surface as described in Swiss patent No. 520331.
The integrator 6, of a design known per se, comprises an active RC system, associated with an amplifier, and a locking diode so that it only works when the current flows through the shunt 3 in the opposite direction. in the sense indicated by the polarity of the source 1. This integrator is associated with a display device 7 graduated directly in units of thickness (microns). It could also be associated with a digital meter.
In the circuit are also arranged a conductive support 9 on which rests a metal container 10 to be tested, the latter containing an electrophoretic solution for the electrophoretic deposition of a dielectric-forming varnish on the inner wall of the metal container 10. It is 's' This is for example a solution of varnish of the acid polar resins type, in which an electrode 8 connected to the negative terminal of the current source is immersed. The circuit is completed by a resistor 1 1 mounted in parallel to the assembly formed by the elements 8, 9 and 10.
Referring also to fig. 2, the process involved in the installation shown is divided into two phases I and II. In phase I the voltage from source 1 is applied to assembly 8, 9 and 10 for a time determined by timer 2. During this phase an electrophoresis current flows which decreases until defects in the protective layer on the inner wall of the container 10 are sealed, as described in Patent No. 520331.

The capacitor can however immediately discharge. through shunt 3 and resistor 11. This discharge occurs in interval II, the charge Q6 displayed by device 7 of integrator 6 being equal to

being considered in this case as infinite.
The charge of the capacitor formed by elements 8, 9 and 10, that is to say the quantity of current restored, is measured by the integrator 6, and given by the known relation:
Q = UC
The capacity being given by the following formula:
C = 0.0085K-5
e where K is the dielectric constant of the protective layer, S the area in cm2 and e the thickness of the layer in cm. The load returned in As becomes:

Q = 0.0885I (U
e the thickness of the layer being given by the relation S K '
e = 00885KU S = K
Q Q K1 being a constant comprising the numerical coefficient 0.0885, the compensated dielectric constant K, the stabilized voltage and the compensated measurement surface S.
The thickness of the deposited layer being proportional to the display device 7 can be directly graduated in units of thickness. The result of the thickness measurement, like the result of the permeability measurement, appears and remains readable until the next measurement.
The thickness measuring device can of course be used independently of the permeability measuring device. In this case, an electrolytic solution can replace the electrophoretic solution.
For the measurement of the thickness on the flat metal surface, the following installation is advantageously used: the electrolytic solution is retained in a suction cup which is applied hermetically on the flat surface which determines a known surface area on it The shunt 3 is connected to the metallic part of this surface and the electrode 8 is immersed in the electrolytic solution.
For measurements to be carried out on metal objects other than hollow bodies and flat surfaces, the following variant can be used: a metal tank is partially filled with electrolyte and connected to the negative terminal of the current source. On the other hand, a device for suspending the controlled object allows the object to be immersed in the electrolyte, while ensuring its electrical connection with the positive pole of the current source.
