a) Einzugszone b) Kompressionszone c) Ausstosszone

Process for the injection molding of thermoplastic polyester molding compounds
The invention relates to an improved process for the injection molding of thermoplastic polyester molding compositions, in particular molding compositions based on polyethylene terephthalate, and a molding produced by means of this process. The improvements according to the invention make it possible to largely prevent the degradation of the heated molding compounds without impairing their flow behavior in the melt.
The injection molding processing of thermoplastics has been known for a long time. The solid, mostly granular plastic is compressed under the action of heat until it changes into a highly plastic to liquid state, and the liquefied plastic is pressed or injected quickly and with great force from a cylinder through a nozzle into a tool that is held closed. Since the tool has a lower temperature than the plastic flowing in, it begins to cool down and finally solidifies completely. After a certain short standing time, the solidification has progressed to such an extent that the tool can be opened and the rigidly solidified injection-molded part can be removed or ejected.
The injection molding processing of polyethylene terephthalate is also already known from British patent specification No. 609 795. From this patent it is known to largely exclude the presence of moisture and air when processing the polyethylene terephthalate molding compositions. It is also expressly emphasized in this patent specification and in German Offenlegungsschrift No. 1 569 591 that the dwell time of the casting material in the liquid state should be kept as short as possible and the temperature of the liquid casting material (melt temperature) in the cylinder of the injection molding machine should be kept as low as possible, in order to avoid a decrease in the molecular weight of the polyethylene terephthalate.
The cylinders of most commercially used injection molding machines have several temperature zones, usually three or four, e.g.
a) Feed zone b) Compression zone c) Discharge zone
In the processing instructions published by Algemene Kunstzijde Unie on the processing of a thermoplastic polyester based on polyethylene terephthalate (the spraying of Arnite-A 150 from September 1968), the processing temperature is 2600 C and the temperatures calculated from the filling funnel of the injection molding machine 270-260-250 and 2600 C. In British Patent No. 609,795, the cylinder temperatures in the three cylinder zones are given as 290, 290 and 2900.degree.
If polyester molding compounds are processed according to the above teachings, i.e. if the melt temperature of the liquid casting compound is kept as low as possible above the melting point, there is only a slight degradation of the polyester, but only a very moderate flowability of the liquid casting compound is obtained. This fluidity is characterized by the flow path covered by the melt in an injection molding tool designed as a spiral with a certain wall thickness (flow path / wall thickness ratio). In order to achieve a more favorable flow behavior, the melt temperature of the casting material can be increased by uniformly increasing the cylinder temperature in the cylinder zones following the teaching of English patent specification number 609 795. This significantly improves the flow behavior, but at the same time the polyester is degraded much more strongly.
This degradation leads to a further improvement in the flow behavior, but only at the expense of the mechanical properties of the injection-molded body. It has thus hitherto not been possible to process polyester casting material in such a way that the degradation of the liquid casting material could be kept to a minimum with a desired high flowability.
The present invention relates to a method which allows thermoplastic polyesters to be processed into molded bodies with a high flow path / wall thickness ratio in such a way that the degradation of the casting material is kept to a minimum. It has been found that, surprisingly and in deviation from the known teachings, the temperature of the liquid molding compound can be kept well above the melting point of the solid molding compound without thermal damage, provided that the temperature in the cylinder feed zone is as low as possible above the melting point the solid molding compound is held.
The present invention therefore relates to a method for the injection molding of thermoplastic polyesters, in particular based on polyethylene terephthalate, which is characterized in that a temperature is set in the temperature zone closest to the filling funnel of the injection molding machine which is around the melting temperature of the solid polyester molding compound, while the temperature of the subsequent temperature zones in the direction of the discharge side of the injection molding machine is set increasing to 600 C higher than the melting temperature of the solid polyester molding compound.
The compression zone should expediently have a higher temperature than the temperature zone closest to the filling funnel, preferably up to 300 C above the melting point of the solid casting material, while the subsequent cylinder ejection zone in turn should have a higher temperature, preferably 200 to 600 C above the melting point of the solid casting material should have. According to the invention, e.g. Polyethylene terephthalate masses are processed at cylinder temperatures in the compression and in the discharge zone of 290 to 3300 C, although the previously known teachings on technical action expressly warned against this.
The procedure according to the invention for processing the polyester casting material at elevated temperatures now has the advantage that, due to the high working temperatures, a high flow path / wall thickness ratio can be set. With the method according to the invention, the addition of plasticizers, which are added in order to increase the flowability of a liquid casting compound, can be reduced or omitted.
The process according to the invention can be applied to all thermoplastic polyester molding compositions. In particular, polyester molding compositions can be processed whose acid component is made up of at least 85% terephthalic acid and whose alcohol component is made up of at least 85% aliphatic and / or alicyclic diols, ie molding compositions based on polyalkylene terephthalate. In addition to terephthalic acid radicals or instead of terephthalic acid radicals, the polyester molding compositions used in some cases contain the radicals of the other aromatic dicarboxylic acids, which contain 1 to 2 benzene rings and 8 to 20 carbon atoms, as further acid components.
The molding compositions usually contain difunctional alkanediols containing 2 to 10 carbon atoms or 1,4-bis (hydroxymethyl) cyclohexane or diethylene glycol as alcohol components. However, the molding compositions can also contain small amounts (0.001 to 1 mol%, based on the total amount of acid component) of branching and crosslinking more than divalent components (polyfunctional carboxylic acids, alcohols, hydroxycarboxylic acids), e.g. Glycerine, erythritol, pentaerythritol, tricarballylic acid, trimellitic, dioxybenzoic and grape acid.
The achievable flow path / wall thickness ratio depends on the processing parameters, apart from the cylinder temperature, the injection pressure, the mold temperature and the injection speed. It is therefore within the scope of the invention to also apply the proposed temperature settings of the injection molding machine when varying the other processing parameters.
Examples: The following examples are carried out on the Arburg Allrounder screw injection molding machine. The spiral shape (cross-section 3 x 7 mm) is used to determine the flowability (flow path / wall thickness ratio) of the liquid polyester molding compound. With the exception of the three independently controllable cylinder temperatures of the injection molding machine, all other processing parameters are kept constant: the mold temperature is always 1400 C, the injection pressure is always 890 kp / cm2, the closing time is always 60 seconds.
A polyethylene terephthalate granulate with an intrinsic viscosity of [11] = 1.10, measured on a 1% solution of phenol: tetrachloroethane (1: 1) at 300 ° C., is used as the polyester molding compound for these experiments.
The test results are summarized in the following table. Examples 1 to 4 serve to illustrate the invention. Comparative Examples A to F characterize the prior art. The limiting viscosity number of the moldings contained is given in column 4. The cylinder temperatures (funnel side / middle / nozzle side) are set by checked temperature regulators.
The flowability of a molding compound is higher, the higher the flow path given in column 3 of the table with a wall thickness of 3 mm.
Examples 1 to 3 are characterized by a temperature profile increasing from the feed zone towards the discharge zone, example 4 by a constant temperature level in the feed and compression zone and by a higher temperature level in the discharge zone. In all the examples which define the scope of the invention, the temperature in the feed zone is kept as low as possible, at a maximum of 2600.degree. The temperature in the other two cylinder zones varies from 260 to 3100 C.
The comparative examples, on the other hand, assume a temperature of at least 2700 C in the feed zone, since it is not possible to process polyethylene terephthalate with a constant or falling temperature profile of 2600 C in the feed zone, since the liquid molding compound would either already solidify or it would become too had high melt viscosity.
Comparative Examples A to C show the effect of constant and falling temperature profiles on the flow behavior of the molding compound and on the intrinsic viscosity of the molded bodies produced. Although the flowability of the liquid molding compositions is good, the strong decrease in molecular weight is expressed in the greatly reduced intrinsic viscosity of the molded body.
Although the comparative experiments D to F show a rising temperature profile, the severe damage to the enamel masses from the drop in the intrinsic viscosity values in the molded body in experiments E and F can be clearly seen. The damage caused by the reduction in molecular weight in Comparative Experiment D is almost as little as in the examples of the invention, but the flowability of the liquid molding composition D is significantly lower than in the examples according to the invention.

Particularly noteworthy in Examples 1 to 4 is the reduction in the decrease in molecular weight. The lower the temperature of the heating cylinder on the funnel side, the lower the degradation values. The reduction in molecular weight is also almost unaffected by the temperature of the central and nozzle-side heating cylinders. The achievable flow path / wall thickness ratio becomes greater, the higher the temperature selected in the discharge zone. The inventive method allows very high
Temperatures in this zone should be selected because the examples show that the degradation values are practically independent of the temperature in the discharge zone.
The higher flowability of the liquid molding compounds is not, as before, bought at the price of a decrease in molecular weight and a corresponding loss of mechanical properties. Furthermore, it can be seen from Examples 1 and D that, in order to prevent a loss of mechanical properties of the molded body, the processing temperatures would have to be greatly reduced. However, this means that the molding compound has a significantly reduced flowability.
The method according to the invention thus enables the production of thin-walled and long molded parts with the lowest possible reduction in molecular weight.
