Process for preparing a catalyst in binary nickel-based alloys and the catalyst obtained The main patent relates to a: process for preparing catalysts in binary nickel-based alloys, the phase diagram of which shows a) a variation as a function of temperature, of the solubility in nickel of the metal which is alloyed with it, and b)
the presence of an intermetallic compound or of an intermediate, metastable phase of a flax nickel / alloy metal crystal system, a process which is characterized in that 1)
prepares by melting a binary solution rich in nickel, the concentration of the alloyed metal of which is between that forming a single solid solution and that corresponding to said intermetallic compound or to said intermediate phase, 2) the alloy is subjected, after having caused its solidification,
in a combined operation of annealing and quenching, 3) a shaped article is prepared by cold mechanical processing, 4) the shaped article is subjected to isothermal tempering, until a maximum activity catalytic, measured by the activation energy of the para-ortho-hydrogen conversion, is achieved, and 5) the article thus treated is cooled.
The process according to this invention tends to modify the structure of the catalyst, in particular by creating active centers located in the mass of the alloy and, more particularly, in the immediate vicinity of the surface of the latter.
The process according to the invention thus aims to make the electronic factors of the bodies present more favorable, in particular, by making d orbitals available within the catalyst.
In its main patent, the proprietor also indicated, as a preferred example, the data. particular relating to the activation of binary solutions on saturated beryllium and aluminum. In the main patent, a certain number of test reactions were indicated in particular allowing <B> to </B> to demonstrate, during the recommended treatment,
the appearance of privileged zones, particularly favoring the activation of the catalytic properties of the alloys during treatment. Such test reactions are, for example,; the measurement of the activation energy in the reaction of conversion of para-hydrogen into ortho-hydrogen, the determination of the intensity corresponding to the ionization of hydrogen in solution in potash, etc.
The present invention relates to a method according to claim I of the main patent, and this method is characterized in that the metal alloyed with nickel is silicon, indium or tantalum.
As regards the preliminary conditions imposed on the phase diagrams of the alloys to be treated by the present process, they are the same as those described in the main patent - variability, as a function of temperature, of the solu bility in nickel, of the additional metal, - .existence of an intermetallic compound, or even of an intermediate, metastable phase,
of a nickel / alloy metal crystal system.
We therefore first prepare by melting a binary solution with limitation, in atomic proportion, of the second metal in the alloy, the two limits imposed being respectively: a lower limit, which is the maximum content leading to a single solid solution , rich in nickel at room temperature; an upper limit, corresponding precisely to the intermetallic compound or to the aforementioned intermediate phase.
The assays of the second metal show optimum values which are indicated below for the new metals which will be discussed. However, it remains of course that improvements in the catalytic properties of the corresponding alloys are also observed on either side of said values, but to a lesser degree.
These proportions are established as follows

<tb> - <SEP> Indium ............... <SEP> 5 <SEP> 0 / o
<tb> - <SEP> Tantalum <SEP> ............
<SEP> 5 <SEP> to <SEP> 10 <SEP> 0 / o As for the succession of the different steps of the process according to this invention, said succession and the number of steps are very substantially the same as those indicated in the main patent for the case of beryllium and aluminum.
It is nevertheless advisable to indicate certain preferred points for each of the new metals.
Thus, the purity of the silicon will be at least 99.99 The annealing is preferably carried out at 10,000 ° C., for a period of around one hundred hours. The samples will be maintained, during the preferred dissolving annealing, under vacuum for approximately two hours, at 11000 C before being quenched with water:
The income generally takes place at 7000 C; as in the case of the main patent, it is recommended to repeat the operation several times.
For indium, we will start with a first annealing (homogenization) at 7800 C, also for a period of a hundred hours, before quenching. The solution annealing will be carried out at 9000 C, after which an isothermal tempering is carried out at 6500 C.
For tantalum, the initial annealing usually takes place at 10500 C, for about seventy-five hours, after which the sample is quenched. The isothermal tempering will be done at 8000 C, always under vacuum.
The figures appended hereto show in graphs, as a function of the three tests selected, the evolution over time of the various parameters characterizing the catalytic power of the aforementioned alloys.
The tests selected were

Other features and advantages of the invention will emerge more clearly in the course of the following description and with reference to the appended diagrams, description and diagrams relating to particular cases of embodiment of the invention, given purely by way of illustration.
Fig. 1 summarizes the results obtained for the Ni-Si alloy.
Fig. 2 summarizes these same results for the Ni-In alloy.
Fig. 3 gives the results in question for the Ni-Ta alloy.
It can be seen in FIG. 1, that for Ni-Si, the activation energy in the para-ortho-hydrogen reaction has two minimums, for respective tempering times of six and sixty minutes. As for the ionization intensity, it exhibits a maximum for a tempering period of approximately three hundred minutes.
It seems possible to affirm that, by comparison with Ni-Al, the Ni-Si catalyst has a lower catalytic power, which could be explained by a less extensive evolution of the structure of the alloy. , in this last case.
Two causes could be cited in support of this thesis

In the case of the Ni-In alloy, shown in fig. 2, we see that the activation energy has a single maximum, for a tempering time of about sixty minutes, for this same time, we see the appearance of a <U> minim </U> um of the ionization intensity, the combination of the two phenomena being able to be interpreted as an increase in the catalytic power of the sample considered.
It should be noted, however, that, for a period of tempering greater than one hour, a practically continuous decrease in the hardness of the sample was observed.
As regards tantalum, it can be seen in FIG. 3 that if a <U> minim </U> um -of the ionization intensity is indeed detectable after a treatment of approximately one hour, the corresponding variation -of the activation energy is fairly insensitive; the same applies to the hardness of the sample.
The structure: of this catalyst is therefore relatively stable and its catalytic power lower than that of the other alloys described.
