Le composé solide d'un métal bivalent répond à la formule générale X2 _ nM(OR)n dans laquelle - M est un métal bivalent choisi de préférence parmi le calcium, le zinc, le manganèse, le cobalt ou le nickel, et plutôt le magnésium ; - X est un radical inorganique monovalent choisi de préférence parmi les radicaux halogénure, c'est- à-dire chlorure, bromure, iodure ou fluorure;

On chauffe à reflux (700 C environ) pendant 1 heure.
Process for the preparation of a polymerization catalyst The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of a catalyst and its use for the low pressure polymerization and copolymerization of olefins.
In Swiss Patent No. 477223 of October 11, 1967, in the name of the patentee, various processes for low-pressure polymerization of olefins in the presence of solid catalysts are described. These catalysts are prepared by reacting a solid compound of a divalent metal M having M-O bonds with a halogen derivative of a transition metal. They are activated by means of an organometallic compound.
Applied to the polymerization of ethylene, they exhibit an exceptionally high activity and make it possible to manufacture polyethylenes characterized by high linearity and adjustable melting indices in a very wide range.
Principal Patent No. 508416 relates to the preparation of modified and improved solid catalysts suitable for the polymerization and copolymerization of olefins under low pressure and which consist of a) an organometallic compound, and b) a solid obtained. by reaction of a solid compound of a divalent metal with an impregnating agent consisting of an organometallic compound, separation of the solid product of the reaction, reaction of this product with a halogenated derivative of a transition metal, separation and washing of the solid reaction product.
According to the main patent, the second constituent of the catalysts obtained by the process in accordance with the invention is obtained by treating a solid support and is itself solid. The solid support is a compound of a bivalent metal. It is preferably chosen from the compounds of calcium, zinc, manganese, cobalt or nickel and especially magnesium. It is also possible to use mixed compounds of two or more divalent metals.
Among the compounds suitable for serving as a solid support, mention may be made of hydroxychlorides, partially hydroxylated halides, simple or complex oxides, complex hydroxides, alcoholates and salts of inorganic oxides (sulfates, nitrates, phosphates). or silicates, for example). Salts of mono- or polycarboxylic organic acids are also suitable.
The impregnating agent is an organometallic compound chosen from the organic derivatives of the metals of groups I, II, III or IV of the Periodic Table, and in particular from the halides and the organometallic hydrides as well as the completely alkylated derivatives of these metals. It is also preferred to use trialkylaluminums, but it is also possible to employ dialkylaluminum halides, alkylmagnesium halides, alkylaluminum hydrides, alkyltin hydrides and organometallic compounds of silicon having at least one Si- bond. H.
It has now been found that when the solid support is an alcoholate of a divalent metal and in particular a magnesium alcoholate, or any other compound of the formula X2 _ "M (OR)" where M is a divalent metal, X is a monovalent inorganic radical, R is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical and n is a number such as 0 G n G 2, and when the impregnating agent is an alkylaluminum halide, catalysts are obtained which have particular properties and in particular a further improved activity.
The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of improved catalysts, used for the polymerization and copolymerization of olefins at low pressure, consisting of a) an organometallic compound, and b) a solid obtained by reacting a support consisting of of a solid compound of a divalent metal with an organometallic compound identical to or different from the preceding one, by separating the solid product of the reaction, by reacting this product with a halogenated derivative of a transition metal in the absence of diluent liquid and separating the solid product of the reaction according to claim I of the main patent,
in which the solid compound of a divalent metal consists of a compound of the formula X2 _ nM (OR) n where M is a divalent metal, X a monovalent inorganic radical, R a monovalent hydrocarbon radical containing from 1 to 20 ato mes of carbon, and n a number such that 0 <n G 2 and the organometallic compound which is reacted with it is an alkylaluminum halide of the formula AIR 'pY3-p where Y is a halide radical, R' a monovalent hydrocarbon radical containing 1 to 20 carbon atoms, and p is such that 1 <p <. 3.
These catalysts are used for the polymerization and the copolymerization of olefins preferably comprising from 1 to 6 carbon atoms and in particular the manufacture of polyethylene, polypropylene, and ethylene-propylene co polymers.
The polymerization and the copolymerization can be carried out according to known techniques: in the gas phase, that is to say in the absence of any liquid medium, or else in the presence of a dispersant in which the monomer is soluble. As dispersant, it is possible to use an inert hydrocarbon which is liquid under the conditions of the polymerization, or else the monomers themselves maintained in the liquid state under their saturation pressure.
Depending on the temperature at which the operation is carried out, the polymerization and the nature of the polymerization medium, the polymer is dissolved in the polymerization medium or else is dispersed therein in the form of solid particles. The dispersion process is especially economical because it allows to operate at a lower temperature and to recover well-formed polymer particles.
The catalysts obtained according to the process of the invention comprise two constituents. The first of these constituents is an organometallic compound chosen from organic derivatives of metals of groups I, II, III and IV of the Periodic Table. It is in particular possible to use the halides and the organometallic hydrides, as well as the completely alkylated derivatives of these metals. By way of example, mention may be made of dialkylaluminum halides, alkylmagnesium halides, alkylaluminum hydrides, alkyltin hydrides and organic silicon compounds having at least one Si — H bond. However, it is preferred to use trialkylaluminums.
The amount of organometallic compound, the first constituent of the catalyst, to be used during the polymerization is not critical. However, there must be a molar excess of this first constituent in the polymerization medium relative to the amount of transition metal chemically bonded to the solid support. The molar ratio between the two is preferably between 10 and 200.
The solid compound of a divalent metal has the general formula X2 _ nM (OR) n in which - M is a divalent metal preferably chosen from among calcium, zinc, manganese, cobalt or nickel, and rather magnesium; - X is a monovalent inorganic radical preferably chosen from halide radicals, ie chloride, bromide, iodide or fluoride;
- R is a saturated or unsaturated monovalent hydrocarbon radical comprising from 1 to 20 carbon atoms and preferably from 1 to 10, chosen from alkyl radicals, branched or not, cycloalkyl radicals, optionally substituted, aryl radicals , arylalkyl and alkylaryl; - n is a number greater than 0 and less than or equal to 2; it is not at all necessary that it be an integer because the non-staichiometric compounds are very suitable for carrying out the invention.
Examples of compounds which can be used for the preparation of the new polymerization catalysts are: alcoholates and phenolates of magnesium, calcium, zinc, manganese, cobalt and nickel; - alkoxy and phenoxymagnesium halides and similar derivatives of other divalent metals mentioned above; - reaction products and intimate mixtures of alcoholates and / or phenolates of the biva slow metals with halides of the same metals; - mixtures and combinations of two or more of the compounds mentioned above.
It is understood that the terms phenoxy and phenolate should be understood in their general sense and that, if they cover the derivatives of the benzene series, they extend to the corresponding polycyclic derivatives, for example to the derivatives of naphthalene, phenanthrene, anthracene, etc.
The solid compounds undergo before any reaction a treatment aimed at drying them perfectly. It is in fact essential that the solid compounds be very dry before being used because the alkylaluminum halide reacts with water.
The particle size of the solid compound is not critical. It is, however, chosen relatively coarse so as to avoid the blockages which too fine support particles could produce.
The alkylaluminum halide used for the first reaction is a compound of formula AIR'pY3-p where Y is a halide radical either chloride, fluoride, bromide or iodide, p is such that 1 <p <3, but must not not be an integer because it only indicates the composition of the reagent which may be a mixture of several alkylaluminum halides, and R 'is a hydrocarbon radical comprising from 1 to 20 carbon atoms and preferably from 1 to 10.
In particular, ethylaluminum dichloride, ethylaluminum sesquichloride, n-butylaluminum dichloride and n-octylaluminum dichloride are used.
For its first reaction, the solid compound can be suspended in a diluent which is inert with respect to organometallic compounds. An alkane or a cycloalkane (hexane or cyclohexane for example) is generally chosen as diluent. The operation is preferably carried out in a closed container with an inert gas such as nitrogen flushed out and stirred throughout the duration of the impregnation.
To the suspension of the solid compound in the diluent, the alkylaluminum halide is added as such or dissolved in a solvent. This solvent can be chosen identical to the diluent which is used to suspend the support.
The reaction time can have some influence on the performance of the catalyst. It is generally between 5 and 240 minutes, preferably between 10 and 60 minutes. It seems that in most cases a period of thirty minutes is sufficient. Throughout the reaction, the suspension of solid compound is maintained at a temperature between room temperature and that of boiling of the diluent at normal pressure. Preferably, the temperature is maintained between 20 and 1400 C.
The transformation of the solid is often marked by an exothermic phenomenon occurring after a variable period of time depending on the reaction conditions. Due to the existence of this phenomenon, the reactions are carried out with vigorous stirring.
The reaction is accompanied by a very deep transformation of the solid: it is observed in particular that its specific surface area, if it is low at the start, for example less than 10 m2 / g, passes, after reaction, to several times its initial value. , for example more than 40 ml / g, and preferably more than 100 ml / g.
From a chemical point of view, the reaction involves an at least partial exchange of alkoxy or phenoxy radicals and halogens between the bivalent metal and aluminum and is accompanied by the attachment of a certain quantity of the latter metal. in combined form.
The extent of the exchange and the amount of fixed aluminum are influenced by the nature and amount of the alkylaluminum halide used for the impregnation. An excess of alkylaluminum halide results in further exchange which may even be substantially complete if the reaction conditions are sufficiently vigorous.
At the end of the reaction time, the stirring is stopped and the solid product of the first reaction is separated, for example by filtration. The product is then washed with an inert solvent so as to remove the excess reagent.
At the next stage in the preparation of the second component of the catalyst, the solid product is treated with a halogenated derivative of a transition metal. This treatment is preferably carried out in the absence of any diluent, in suspension in the halogenated derivative of a transition metal maintained in the liquid state at the temperature at which the operation is carried out. This temperature is usually between 40 and 1800 C. The treatment is carried out in a dry place.
It is generally continued for about an hour after which the treated product is washed with an inert diluent so as to remove the excess of the halogenated derivative of the transition metal not fixed on the support. It can then be dried, for example in a stream of inert gas. The second component of the polymerization catalyst is thus obtained.
The halogenated derivatives of transition metals which can be used for the treatment of solid products are chosen from the chlorides, bromides, alkoxyhalides and oxyhalides of the metals of groups IVa, Va and VIa of the Periodic Table, and more particularly from the chlorinated derivatives of titanium and vanadium (TiC14, VC14 or VOC13 for example). The best results are. obtained with TiCl4.
After the reaction with the alkylaluminum halide and after treatment with a halogen derivative of a transition metal, the solid compound, the alkylaluminum halide and the halogenated derivative are chemically bound in an activated complex. None of these components of the activated complex can be separated by physical means such as washings with solvents.
The activated complex, the second constituent of the catalyst, can be brought into contact with the organometallic compound, in the polymerization chamber or prior to its introduction into this chamber. It can then undergo a maturing treatment in contact with the organometallic compound at room temperature or at a higher temperature.
The catalysts prepared by the process according to the invention exhibit very high activity. As a result, the catalytic residues are found in such a low concentration relative to the polymer that their presence is in no way a nuisance for any application. It is therefore superfluous to purify the polymers produced according to the process of the invention.
The polyolefins produced with these said catalysts exhibit remarkable properties. In particular, they are characterized by a high molecular weight. Thus, the polyethylenes obtained with the catalysts of the invention have a melt index (Standard ASTM D 1505-57 T) generally less than 1 g / 10 min even when polymerization at relatively high temperature and in the presence of hydrogen.
For the manufacture of high molecular weight polyolefins, catalysts prepared from products of the first reaction containing a high proportion of halogen are especially well suited. In order to manufacture these polyolefins, it is preferred to start from products of the first reaction whose halogen / metal atomic ratio M is greater than 1.5. The best results are obtained when this ratio is greater than 1.7.
High molecular weight polyolefins are of considerable technical importance as they are preferably employed in applications where the polymer is extruded such as, for example, for the manufacture of profiles or bottles (by extrusion blow molding). Example 1: 10 g of Mg (OC2H5) 2 are introduced into 20 ml of a solution containing 165.5 g of Al2 (C2H5) 3C13 per 100 g of hexane, which corresponds to a Cl / Mg atomic ratio of 1.5.
The whole is maintained at 250 C for 1 hour. After separation and drying of the reaction product, a solid is collected which elemental analysis shows that it contains 209 g of Mg and 19 g of A1 per kg.
Its specific surface is 250 m 2 / g while that of the starting magnesium ethoxide was less than 10 m 2 / g. This shows the depth of the transformation undergone.
The product of this first reaction is treated with TiCl4 for 1 hour at 140 ° C. It is then washed until all traces of chloride are removed in the washing solvent, then dried under a stream of dry nitrogen.
Analysis of the catalytic solid thus obtained indicates the following composition Mg: 197 g / kg A1: 7.6 g / kg Cl: 678 g / kg Ti: 49 g / kg 11 mg of this solid are introduced into an autoclave of 1 , 51 containing 0.51 hexane and 200 mg Al (i.C4H9)

178 g of polyethylene are obtained, which corresponds to a specific activity of 33,000 g PE / hg Ti.atm C2H4 and to a catalytic productivity of 1620 g PE / hg solid.atm C2H4.
The polyethylene obtained is characterized by a melt index (measured according to standard ASTM D 1505-57 T) of 2.59 g / 10 min. Examples 2 to 7: A series of catalytic solids is prepared as in Example 1, but starting from varying amounts of Al (C2H5) CI2. The data concerning the preparation of the catalysts and the polymerization tests are given in Table I. In Examples 2, 4 and 6, the first reaction is carried out at 700 ° C. instead of 250 ° C.
Examples 2 to 7 show that the products of the first reaction, characterized by a high Cl / Mg atomic ratio, lead to polymers of low melt index and, consequently, of high molecular weight.
Examples 6 and 7 show that the first reaction can give rise to the formation of a product containing practically no more alkoxy groups. The Cl / Mg ratio is greater than 2 because part of the chlorine is fixed on the aluminum. Examples 8 to II With the catalytic solid of Example 3, a series of polymerization tests were carried out with activators of various kinds. The results of these tests are given in Table II below.

The procedure is then as in Example 1.
The magnesium ethoxide which has reacted with Al (C2H5) CI2 is then treated with VOC13 heated under reflux for 1 hour.
The solid product obtained, after washing and drying as in Example 1, contains 142 g of magnesium, 15 g of aluminum, 607 g of chlorine and 132 g of vanadium per kg. A polymerization test identical to that of Example 1 is carried out except that 21 mg of solid product are used.
14 g of polyethylene are obtained, which corresponds to a specific activity of 470 g of polyethylene / h. g V. kg / cmê 02H4. The melt index of this polyethylene is 1.03 g / 10 min. Example 13: 20g of magnesium phenate Mg (OC6H5) 2 are introduced into 50 ml of hexane, then 72 ml of a solution of Al (C2H5) Cl2 in hexane are added with stirring (415 g / l solution). The mixture is heated at reflux (approximately 700 C.) for 1 hour.
After separation and washing with hexane at 700 ° C., a solid is collected, the elemental analysis of which shows that it contains 192 g / kg of magnesium, 36 g / kg of aluminum and 493 g / kg of chlorine. The CI / Mg atomic ratio is therefore 1.75. This solid is then reacted as in Example 1. A catalytic solid is obtained whose analysis shows that it contains Mg: 179 g / kg Al: 32 g / kg Cl: 668 g / kg Ti: 50 g / kg A polymerization test is carried out as in Example 1, except that 7 mg of catalytic solid are used.
103 g of polyethylene are obtained, which corresponds to a specific activity of 29,400 g PE / hg Ti.atm C2H4 and to a catalytic productivity of 1470 g PE / hg solide.atm C2H4.
The polyethylene obtained is characterized by a melt index of 0.58 g / 10 min.
