They can be an active component of cleaning disinfectants and can be used for this and other purposes in the form of an aerosol material. They can also be used to protect plants and other crops against attack by microorganisms (including fungi). The use of these bactericides to make plastics, in particular polyvinyl chloride, resistant to attack by microorganisms is a preferred embodiment of the invention.

The effectiveness of the identified compounds in the practice of the invention can also be demonstrated by the standard agar diffusion assay (filter paper disk method) as set out in Table III. In this standard experiment, compounds were diluted with acetone to form the following stock solution: 5, 2.5, 1.25, 0.63 and 0.31% strength, respectively. Filter paper disks having a diameter of 10 mm were immersed in the test solution, and the solvent was then allowed to evaporate. AATCC bacteriostasis agar kept at 45 ° C. was inoculated to the extent of 1% with an 18- to 24-hour old stir-broth culture of S. aureus.
The inoculated agar was distributed in an amount of 15 cm per Petri dish (10 cm diameter) and left solid. The treated filter paper disks were placed on the inoculated agar. The dishes were then incubated at 37 ° C. for 48 hours. The effectiveness could be determined by a bacteria-free court.

The compounds preferably used show an unexpectedly high activity against gram-negative bacteria. It is clear that previously used bactericides have little or no effectiveness against gram negative bacteria when used in concentrations at which the preferred compounds of the invention (for example those containing phenylantimony dichloride) also have an extended biocidal effect exercise gram negative bacteria. For example, when comparing phenylmercuric acetate (a typical bactericide of the state of the art) with the aid of a broth dilution test, it was found that phenyl antimony dichloride is effective against A. aerogenes and P.
aeruginosa was twice as effective as phenylmercuric acetate.

It can be done, for example, by applying the compound to the surface of the material to be protected and or by mixing the compounds with the material to be protected during production or
Processing of said material can be carried out. The compounds can be used per se, especially if they are incorporated into the material during manufacture or processing. Many materials, particularly fibrous products, can be treated by applying the compound to the surface by dipping, padding, rinsing, etc. The active compounds can be used in the form of a bactericidal agent in which the compound is the active component or one of the active components. Liquid agents in which the compound is dissolved and / or suspended in a solvent can be used.
Solid means in which the compound is mixed with a carrier can also be used. The carrier can be inert, such as talc, clays, diatomaceous earths, kieselguhrs, flours, etc., or even have a effectiveness as z. B. is unfolded by the quaternary ammonium compounds. The emulsion type liquid compositions often contain a dispersant such as anionic, cationic or nonionic surfactants.
To achieve fungicidal and / or bactericidal agents with an extremely wide range of effectiveness, the compound with other active compounds, such as triorganotin compounds, pentachlorophenol, copper-8-quinolinolate, bis-phenols, o-phenylphenol and polybromosalicylanilides, be mixed.
Small amounts of active compound are generally sufficient to achieve the desired protection. The concentrations of the agents used can be, for example, 0.001 to 0.002%, up to 90 to 100%. These concentrations permit effective amounts to be achieved, for example 0.0001 to 0.01 (1 to 100 parts per million) for water treatment, 0.005 to 0.2% (50 to 2000 parts per million) for plastics treatment, etc. . can be in the medium accessible to the attack at the point to be protected.

The highly effective biocides of the formula (R) nSb (X) 3-n, where n = 2, R are alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, cycloalkyl and cycloalkenyl radicals and X is an etherified mercapto group, are new Compounds that exhibit valuable properties. For example, compounds of this type are particularly effective biocides for use in plastics such as polyvinyl chloride.
These compounds have the formula (R) nSb (X) 3-n, in which n = 2 and X stands for an etherified mercapto group or R Sby, where y is a thio group. Preferably they have the formula (R) 2Sb-S-R ', wherein R is as defined above and R' is of the same type as R, i.e. H. that R and R 'are independent of one another of the type of alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, cycloalkyl and cycloalkenyl radicals.
These compounds can be prepared by reacting (R) 2SbC1, in which R is defined as above, with an alkali metal mercaptide, for example sodium-n-dodecyl mercaptide or sodium lauryl mercaptide, or by reacting [(R) 2Sb] 20 with a mercaptan, for example Phenyl mercaptan, butyl mercaptan, etc. can be produced. For example, di (phenyl) antimony chloride can be mixed with an alkali metal mercaptide, such as sodium n-dodecyl mercaptide, sodium lauryl mercaptide, sodium phenyl mercaptide, sodium butyl mercaptide, sodium ethyl mercaptide, sodium n-propyl mercaptide, sodium isopropyl mercaptide, sodium n-butyl mercaptide, sodium seobutyl mercaptide, sodium butyl mercaptide etc., are implemented, e.g.
B. according to the following equation: (C6H5) 2SbCl + Na (S-C4H9) -> (C6H5) 2Sb-S-C4H9 + NaC1 The reaction is preferably carried out by mixing the (R) 2SbC1 with the sodium mercaptide in equimolar amounts in The presence of an inert diluent, for example benzene, and heating of the reaction mixture thus formed under reflux for a sufficient time to complete the reaction, for example 0.5 to 20 hours, preferably 4 to 6 hours. The by-product sodium chloride can be filtered off and the solvent, for example benzene, can be stripped from the product.
These compounds can also be prepared by reacting [(R) 2Sb] 20 with a mercaptan. For example, bis [di (phenyl) antimony] oxide can be reacted with ethyl mercaptan, n-propyl mercaptan, sec-butyl mercaptan, phenyl mercaptan, benzyl mercaptan, cyclohexyl mercaptan, n-dodecyl mercaptan, lauryl mercaptan, p-tolyl mercaptan, and allyl mercaptan will.
The reaction of [(R) 2Sb] 20 with a mercaptane is preferably carried out by mixing 1 mole of the former with 2 moles of the latter in the presence of an inert hydrocarbon solvent, for example benzene, and refluxing the reaction mixture thus formed for about 0.3 to 10 hours, for example 1 to 2 hours, accomplished with the aid of a Dean-Stark trap to remove the water. If no further reaction is observed, the remaining solvent can be stripped off to obtain the product as a residue.
Examples of compounds of the formula (R) nSb (X) 3 - "" which can be used according to the invention: in which n is 2, R is an alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, cycloalkyl or cycloalkenyl radical and X is an etherified mercapto group , or the formula RSbS, include: di- (n-butyl) - (n-dodecyl-thio) -antimony, di- (phenyl) - (n-dodecyl-thio) -antimony, di- (tolyl) - (n-amyl-thio) -antimony, di- (benzyl) - (benzyl-thio) -antimony, di- (allyl) - (cyclohexyl-thio) -antimony, di- (phenyl) - (allyl-thio) - antimony, di- (cyclohexyl) - (n-hexyl-thio) -antimony, di- (tolyl) - (benzyl-thio) -antimony, di- (isopropyl) - (2-ethylhexyl-thio) -antimony, di- (p-chlorophenyl) - (n-butyl-thio) -antimony, di- (phenyl) -antimony- (ethyl mercaptoacetate).

These new compounds can be prepared by using the desired alcohol and antimony halide in the process described above. Preparation 4: 90 g (0.29 mol) of di- (phenyl) -antimony chloride were dissolved in 2 liters of anhydrous benzene and filtered clear in a 5-liter flask in a nitrogen atmosphere. Ammonia gas was then introduced or blown into the solution over a period of 4.5 hours, during which time a white di (phenyl) antimony chloride / ammonia complex was precipitated.
Then 400 cm (0.29 mol + 5% excess) of anhydrous n-butanol were added over a period of 15 minutes, and the resulting cloudy or opaque white reaction mass was brought to the reflux temperature and stirred for 7.5 hours and heated to reflux. The reaction mass was then cooled and filtered to remove ammonium chloride. The solvent was stripped from the filtrate under vacuum with a vessel content temperature of 100 C / 2.5 mm Hg. The oil residue of 89.4 g (88.5% yield), which crystallized on standing, had a boiling point of 133 to 1411 ° C. at 0.5 mm Hg. On hydrolysis, it gave n-butanol.
The analysis showed 37.7% Sb (theoretical for di (phenyl) antimony butoxide: 34.9% Sb).
Preparation 5: 187.0 g (0.69 mol) of phenylantimony dichloride were dissolved in 2 liters of anhydrous benzene and filtered under nitrogen in a 5-liter wide-necked flask. Then ammonia gas was bubbled into the solution over a period of 4 hours during which time a white ammonia complex precipitated. Then 1920 cm (1.39 mol + 50% excess) of anhydrous n-butanol were added over a period of 0.5 hour, whereupon the reaction mass was brought to the reflux temperature and for 3 hours with stirring and under Was heated to reflux.
The reaction mass was cooled and filtered to remove ammonium chloride, and the solvent was stripped from the filtrate with a vessel temperature of 100 ° C. at 2 mm Hg. The product had a boiling point of 134 to 147 ° C. at 0.3 mm Hg. The analysis showed 35.9% Sb (theoretically for phenylantimone di (butoxide): 35.3% Sb).
