Process for treating textile keratin fibers
In its French patent No. 1349140, the holder has already recommended, to treat textile keratin fibers, the use of polysulfonated polymers obtained by condensation of a mixed copolymer of maleic anhydride and of another monomer which can be copolymerized on an aminothiol, of formula HS-R-NH-R ', in which
R is an alkylene radical preferably comprising from 2 to 4 carbon atoms, optionally substituted by lower alkyls which may have up to 4 carbon atoms, by a carboxyl radical or by a carbalkoxy group, R ′ being constituted by an atom d 'hydrogen or lower alkyl such as -CH3, C.lH6, ...
In its Swiss patent No. 400087, the licensee described the treatment of textile fibers using poly - sulfhydryl polymers, in particular copolymers of maleic anhydride and vinyl monomers, polysulfhydrylated on the acid functions.
It has also been proposed, in French patent No. 1367854, to treat textile keratin fibers by means of a salt of a mercapto-amine and of an olefinic acid polymer, in order to modify their physical form and their configuration.
A subject of the present invention is a process for treating textile keratin fibers with a view to their mechanical reinforcement and / or their subsequent dyeing, according to which said fibers are stiffly impregnated with a solution containing a polysulfhydryl polymer.
This process is characterized in that the polymer is obtained by at least partial amidation of an acid anhydride homopolymer with a mercapto-amine.
A subject of the invention is also the application of the above process to the treatment of textile keratin fibers prior to their dyeing using reactive or metalliferous dyes.
The process according to the invention has the advantage that it uses polymers which are more soluble than those used in the process of Swiss patent No. 400087 and much less likely to hydrolyze at certain pH than the polymers used in the process of the patent. French No 1367854. This pH sensitivity of the polymers used in this prior process can cause serious disadvantages in practice. Thus, the ionic bond between the mercapto-amine and the acid function can split during a subsequent treatment of the keratin fibers carried out under unfavorable pH conditions.
To prepare the polysulfhydryl polymers used in the process of the invention, one can proceed as described in Swiss Patent No. 493572.
In particular, use may be made as the polymer of maleic polyanhydride, itaconic polyanhydride, acrylic polyanhydride, polyanhydride with mixed acrylic-methacrylic units, or methacrylic polyanhydride.
To sulfhydrylate the polymers, it is possible to use, for example, aminothiols having the formula:
HS-R-NH-R 'in which:
R denotes either an alkylene radical preferably comprising from 2 to 4 carbon atoms, optionally substituted by lower alkyls which may have up to 4 carbon atoms, or a carboxyl radical, or also a carbalkoxy group, and
R 'denotes a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl such as - CH3 or --C> Ha.
Among the amino-thiols corresponding to the above formula, there may be mentioned by way of example:
- B-mercaptoethylamine,
- cysteine, and
- ethyl cysteinate.
It is also possible to use sulfhydryl homopolymers derived from amine mercapto-amides of formula:
EMI2.1
in which:
Rt represents H, -CH3, -C2H5, or -CH2-CH2-OH
R2 represents H or COOH
q is an integer that can range from 1 to 5, these limit values being included,
q 'is equal to either 0 or 1,
p is either 0 or 1.
Among the mercapto-amide amines corresponding to the latter formula, there may be mentioned those which are obtained from esters of thioglycolic acid, of thiolactic acid or of β-mercaptopropionic acid and of diamines such as ethylene diamine, hexamethylene diamine, N-hydroxyethyl ethylene diamine.
It is also possible to use partially polysulfhydryl polymers which result from the simultaneous condensation, on the homopolymers of anhydrides, of amines not comprising —SH groups and of mercapto-amines.
These partially polysulfhydrylated homopolymers have a lower content of —SH groups but may contain groups giving them particular qualities.
It is possible, for example, to use polysulfhydryl homopolymers which result from the simultaneous condensation of mercapto-amines and alkylamines of the formula:
EMI2.2
in which:
R3 represents a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl,
R4 represents either a lower alkyl or a radical of formula:
EMI2.3
r and r 'being identical or different lower alkyls, or possibly forming part of a heterocycle such as that of morpholine or piperidine.
m is an integer equal to 2, 3 or 4.
Among the compounds according to the above formula, there may be mentioned: butylamine, N, N-diethylpropylene diamine and N, (P-aminoethyl) morpholine, without this enumeration being limiting.
In the case where such partially polysulfhydrylated polymers are used, it is possible to vary on the same homopolymer the proportions of mercapto-amine and unsulfhydrylated diamine within wide limits, ranging for example from 1 to 99%, but from preferably from 20 to 80% mercapto-amine relative to the unsulfhydrylated amine.
The homopolymers which are obtained by polymerization of an anhydride are capable of fixing a significantly greater quantity of - SH groups than the previously known polysulfhydryl polymers, which were made from resins consisting of copolymers of an anhydride and of a another monomer which does not bind SH groups.
This property allows these homopolymers to exhibit greater reactivity with respect to keratin substances.
Furthermore, the treatments carried out using these homopolymers exhibit greater regularity and greater homogeneity than the treatments carried out with polysulfhydryl polymers in accordance with French patent No. 1349140. In fact, during the polymerization of copolymers, the proportions of the two monomers entering into the composition of the copolymers vary from one molecule to another and the products obtained necessarily have a double distribution, namely: a first distribution as a function of chain lengths, on which is superimposed a second distribution which is a function of the proportions of the two monomers constituting the copolymers.
On the other hand, the homopolymers used according to the invention all have the same chemical structure, the only difference being able to exist from one molecule to another resulting only from different chain lengths.
It follows that the homopolymers used according to the invention are more easily reproducible and consequently give more regular results when they are applied to keratin fibers.
The following solutions can be used to impregnate the keratinous textile fibers as described in the examples below.

The temperature is raised to 95 ° C. over a period of 35 minutes and the bath is maintained at this temperature of 950 ° C. for 15 minutes.
After dyeing, scouring is carried out in a 1% detergent solution for 15 minutes at 500 ° C.
A beautiful olive green color is again obtained and the exhaustion of the bath, measured colorimetrically, reaches 100 0 / o.
For comparison, the dyeing of 4 g of woolen yarn is carried out in exactly the same way, but after having treated the yarn in a solution containing a polymer in accordance with Swiss patent No. 400087 and of the following formula:
EMI5.1
The treatment solution has the following composition:
Polymer above 1.17 g
Ammonia 220 Bé 2 cc
Water, q.s.p. 100 cc
The coloration obtained is markedly worse and the exhaustion of the bath is only 56.4%.
The amount of 1.17 g of polymer in the comparative solution was chosen so that the acid number of the solution was the same as that of the treatment solution of Example 8.

Distilled water, q.s.p. 100 cc
The fabric to be treated is moistened by rolling the ball of the bottle to the place where you want to make the fold, then ironing with a hot iron.
This gives a fold with excellent hold.
It can be seen that the process according to the invention makes it possible to easily and efficiently produce folds on textile articles containing keratin fibers such as wool.
