Exemple N I
Parties Parties
Sable extra-siliceux 85-79 en particulier 83
Ciment noir a Lafarge 7-10 7
Bentonite à haut pouvoir
gélifiant 3- 4 3
Eau 17-20 17
Exemple No 2
Parties Parties
Sable siliceux 79-85 en particulier 83
Ciment noir Lafarge 7-10 7
Polystyrène expansé 3 4 3
Eau 5- 7 5
Exemple No 3
Parties
Sable extra-siliceux 80
Ciment noir Lafarge 7
Polystyrène expansé 3
Bentonite 3
Eau 17
Process for casting steel in ingot molds
The present invention relates to the technique of steelworks and relates to a process for casting steel in ingots.
It is known, in foundry, to use a metal frame and, inside the latter, a filling formed by a mixture of sand and clay to which water is added to cause the setting. This filling is produced from one or more models, a mold for casting one or more parts. Due to the shape of the frame, which is generally flat, the surface area of the filling in contact with the air is large, so that the evaporation of water can take place easily.
It is also known that in steelworks the longevity of an ingot mold is limited as a result of its contact with liquid steel at high temperature. The steel indeed attacks the cast iron constituting the mold by thermal shock and erosion, and it is normally considered that the useful life of an ingot mold is limited to 60 casting operations.
The application to the steelworks of the principle of producing a mold body formed by a mixture of sand, cement and water, for example for the establishment of an ingot mold lining, is not feasible. without difficulty. In fact, in this case, the lining is not in constant contact with the air, since it is isolated from the atmosphere to the outside by the cast iron mold and it is located inside in contact with the cast steel, so that contact with the atmosphere is in fact only provided by the edge of the lining.
Now, we know that if water is present inside the mold during casting, two dangers can result, namely an unfavorable action of the hydrogen in the water on the steel and risk of explosion due to the impossibility for water vapor to escape freely.
The aim of the invention is to create a process for casting steel in ingot molds which overcomes the aforementioned drawbacks.
The invention comprises a process for casting steel in ingots, characterized in that before casting the liquid steel, inside the ingot, a lining formed by a self-hardening mass consisting of a material is established. refractory, a fast-setting binder, requiring only a very small quantity of water, and at least one additive providing for the hardened mass forming the lining, after setting, a permeability allowing the escape of the waste water .
Due to the permeability thus created, the waste water can escape through the edge of the lining, given that channels or passages are formed in its mass, and the aforementioned dangers, due to the presence of water, are discarded.
The fact of making inside the mold a filling in self-hardening mixture, which is in contact with the liquid steel during casting, protects the internal walls of the mold by creating a new contact surface and eliminates the unfavorable effects on them due to this contact, so that a mold can be used in a theoretically unlimited way. Thus, it seems that an ingot mold can be used for at least 400 or even 500 castings, which represents a significant saving. Moreover, since the lining is renewed at each casting, its internal surface is always smooth, so that the surface quality of the ingot is improved and the defects which may appear during rolling are eliminated.
Finally, if this is desirable, the internal surface of the lining can be given any desired profile, for example corrugated or the like, and this profile can be modified at each casting.
The lining can be established inside the mold in any desired manner, but an advantageous solution consists in operating by spraying the mixture of sand or other refractory product, cement or other binder, additive, water and preferably catalyst, using for this purpose a fluid mixture, semi
fluid or pasty and achieving its adhesion or its
hanging on the walls of the mold of all my
appropriate, either because of its nature and its
application by projection, or by means of elements
hooking attached to the walls of the mold or re
held on them.
According to an implementation mode appearing before
tageux, one can use for the establishment of garnishes
wise a Torcrait type projection device, which
is able to project an almost dry mixture (tale
nant 1 or 2 O / o water) while allowing the addition
of a product which can, for example, be mixed with
rest of the water required (4 to 5 O / o) and whose nature is
such that it results in an acceleration of the setting, for
for example by a catalysis effect, at the time of the app
actual cation of the final mixture against the flax wall
gotière. In this way, premature setting is avoided,
making application by projection impossible, while
using mixtures with a minimum content of
water.
The device used can be removed from the mold
immediately after applying the filling. For
facilitate this extraction, a device can be used,
collapsible or deflatable which can occupy the
volume reserved for the ingot, or we can ensure the
release the device by lifting the mold it
even.
In fact, in this way, a double-walled or jacketed ingot mold is obtained. The mold body
can be made of cast iron, in the usual way, but it
It would be possible to design an ingot mold body in another metal or in plastic, the resistance required being simply that necessary to withstand the forces resulting from the action of the liquid steel on the lining.
As additives, the mixture may contain plant, mineral or synthetic materials capable of creating permeability in the lining, due to their elimination during setting or during the casting of the steel. Mention may be made, as examples of such materials, of wood flour, perlite, expanded polystyrene, bentonite, etc. The water vapor produced during the casting of the steel from the residual water of crystallization can then escape through the channels or passages created because of this permeability, to reach the edge of the lining in contact with it. the atmosphere. The catalyst used can be borax.
Several examples of mixtures which can be used for the implementation of this process will be given below.
Example N I
Parties Parties
Extra-siliceous sand 85-79 in particular 83
Black cement a Lafarge 7-10 7
High potency bentonite
gelling agent 3- 4 3
Water 17-20 17
(If desired, add 1 to 2 0 / o of sodium hydroxide to accelerate the gel setting capacity of the bentonite.)
In this mixture, the bentonite absorbs the water forming a gel. When the cement sets, the temperature rises and even exceeds 100 "C, so that
the gel decomposes and the water then released evaporates
and frees the spaces previously occupied by the gel.
The bentonite returns to its original volume, so that it
remains in the filling resulting from many ca
nals which allow this escape of water, as well as
that of gases which can form either during setting,
either during casting. These channels occupy a space
relatively large because bentonite can absorb
ber up to 12-14 times its weight in water.
Example No 2
Parties Parties
Siliceous sand 79-85 in particular 83
Lafarge black cement 7-10 7
Expanded polystyrene 3 4 3
Water 5- 7 5
In this example, the bentonite is replaced by
expanded polystyrene. The polystyrene used is presented
in the form of small balls 0.5 to 4 mm in diameter. When the spray mixture is applied, the volume of the polystyrene changes only very
little, so that it occupies a significant volume in the applied filling. At the time of taking, when the
temperature rises and reaches approximately 60-800 C, the polystyrene decomposes and the gases formed escape, leaving as many cavities in the packing.
These cavities communicate by creating channels providing the desired permeability and making it possible at the time of casting the escape of gases (water vapor).
Example No 3
Parts
Extra siliceous sand 80
Lafarge black cement 7
Expanded polystyrene 3
Bentonite 3
Water 17
In this mixture, the combined use of bentonite and expanded polystyrene makes it possible to obtain particularly good permeability.
In any of these examples, it is possible to mix certain additional products with the sand, for example chamotte, or else flour or paper pulp which, under the effect of the high temperature, is transformed into carbon, providing for the lining a more resistant surface.
It will be noted that, in each of these examples, a binder consisting here of Lafarge black cement of the fast-setting type and resistant to high temperatures and requiring only a small quantity of water for setting, as opposed to usual cements, which require the use of 20 to 35 O / o of water.
In another particular implementation of the process of the invention, there is produced inside the mold, at the same time as the aforementioned filling or else before or after the latter, an insulating and (or) exothermic masselottage coating. , which forms the extension of said lining and which is intended to act on the cast steel during its solidification, in the usual manner, to cause its reflow or to keep it longer in the liquid state, by delaying its solidification, in order to fill the shrinkages which form as a result of the withdrawal of the steel during its cooling, so as to reduce in a known manner the drop at the top of the ingot.
The description which follows, given with reference to the appended drawing, given without limitation, will make it possible to better understand the invention.
The single figure is a schematic view in vertical section of an ingot mold used for implementing the invention.
In the drawing, the reference 1 denotes the cast body of the mold in the form of a truncated cone or a truncated pyramid, the large base of which is oriented downwards (straight mold), resting on a base 2. We have shown at 3 an interior lining produced from a mixture of sand, quick-setting cement, for example aluminous cement, a removable material creating permeability, for example bentonite and water. The application of this mixture, for example in the semi-fluid or pasty state, against the internal walls of the mold, can take place by spraying, as indicated above.
The base 2 has a cavity 5 which is filled with a filling 6 of a nature similar to that of the lining 4, the free surface of this lining preferably exceeding the upper face of the base by a few millimeters to provide a good seal for the mold. 4 has shown an exothermic masselottage coating overlying the aforementioned packing.
As can be seen in the drawing, the coating forms an extension of the packing, the transition between them taking place in a curvilinear profile comparable to a bottle neck. The elimination of sharp edges in the transition zone prevents, during rolling, the formation of folds due to these parts with sharp edges, which correspond to an increase in the drop. Thus, it is possible in the present case to roll the whole of the ingot, including the part corresponding to the weight, due to the particular profile of the zone of the transition, and the fall is represented simply by the jawbone which is formed during rolling.
It is easily seen that, for the casting, we first apply the lining 3 and the coating 4 inside an ingot mold, we fill the cavity 5 of the base, and we allow the setting to take place. . During the subsequent casting of the steel, the residual crystallization water vapor still produced under the effect of the high temperatures which then occur escapes through the edge of the lining due to the permeability of the latter, which eliminates all danger of ingot pollution or explosion.
Due to its nature, the lining crumbles and becomes dust after peeling and can be easily separated from the ingot.
It can therefore be seen that the mold, which is not in contact with the liquid steel, suffers no damage or attack and can be used for a very long time.
