Ignition device for igniting a gas and / or vapor discharge tube The invention relates to an ignition device for igniting a gas and / or vapor discharge tube provided with preheatable electrodes, which device is intended for indirect connection to an alternating voltage source whose voltage as a function time, is practically sinusoidal, the input terminals of the device are connected via a semiconductor element that is only permeable in one direction, and the connections of the input terminals of the device with the semiconductor element are practically free of impedances.
In a known ignition device. The type mentioned above, a semiconductor structure is provided which consists of a series connection of a breakdown diode and a conventional diode. A disadvantage of this known ignition device is that the voltage available for igniting the tube is at most approximately equal to the maximum value of the AC supply voltage. Another disadvantage is that the resistance in the series circuit, which bridges the tube, is still relatively high even when this series circuit is carrying current, so that the electrode preheating current is limited and undesirable heat is generated in the series circuit .
The invention aims to avoid these disadvantages or at least to reduce them.
The ignition device according to the invention is characterized in that the semiconductor element consists of a controlled semiconductor rectifier, that the controlled rectifier is connected in parallel with a series connection of a capacitor and a resistor, which are dimensioned so that the reactance of the capacitor practically corresponds to the impedance. the series connection determines that a control circuit is provided for the controlled semiconductor rectifier, and that at least one of the input terminals of the control circuit is connected to a main electrode of the controlled semiconductor rectifier.
It is known per se to use a heating circuit for feeding and ignition of a tube provided with preheated electrodes, in which a controlled semiconductor element, namely a transistor, is located. In this known case, however, the heating circuit also contains impedances. The inevitable losses in these impedances limit the preheat current, which is a disadvantage.
The resistor in series with the capacitor is used to limit the capacitor current through the controlled rectifier.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawing and will be described in more detail below. 1 shows a circuit diagram of an ignition device according to the invention with: a vapor discharge tube, FIG. 2 shows a graphic representation in which some voltages occurring in the ignition device of FIG. 1 are plotted as a function of time.
In Fig. 1, 1 and 2 are the connection terminals to a supply network of 220 V, 50 Hz. Terminals 1 and 2 are bridged by the series connection of an inductance 3 and a low-pressure mercury vapor discharge lamp 4. 3 is a choke coil, but the inductance may also be formed by a leakage transformer. The lamp 4 is provided with preheated electrodes 5 and 6. The input terminals of the igniter are connected in series with a resistor 7 and a capacitor 8 connected to each other. The aforementioned input terminals are also connected to one another via a controlled semiconductor rectifier (Thy ristor) 9. The controlled semiconductor rectifier is provided with a control circuit.
This control circuit consists u. a. of two resistors 10 and 11 which, connected in series, bridge the main electrodes of the thyristor 9. The connection point of the resistors 10 and 11 is connected to the control electrode of the thyristor 9 via a breakdown element 12. The connection point of the resistors 10 and 11 is further connected to the cathode of the thyristor 9 via a capacitor 13. Finally, the connection point of the breakdown element 12 and the control electrode of the thyristor 9 is connected to the cathode of the thyristor 9 via the resistor 14.
The ignition of the tube 4 in the circuit described takes place as follows: If .the terminals 1 and 2 are connected to the power source, the capacitor 13 auxiliary capacitor 13 in the control circuit of the thyristor 9 is charged via the inductance 3 and the resistor 10. When this capacitor 13 has reached the breakdown voltage of the element 12, the thyristor 9 is made lei tend. A current then flows in the series circuit of the inductance 3, the electrode 5,: the thyristor 9 and the electrode 6. If .the current through the thyristor 9 is zero, this is non-conductive. The capacitor 8 is now quickly charged to about twice the current line voltage. If the lamp does not ignite, the thyristor 9 is made conductive again a little later.
The electrode preheating current then begins to flow again and so on. This is repeated until the lamp 4 ignites. When the lamp is ignited, the voltage across it drops to such a low value that there is a voltage across the counter 11 and thus also across the capacitor 13 at which the element 12 is no longer broken. In other words, the thyristor 9 is then no longer made conductive.
In a practical embodiment, the inductance 3 had a value of 1.2 Henry. The tube 4 was dimensioned for 40 watts. The operating voltage was 103 V. In the operating state of this lamp, the lamp current was about 0.44 A. The capacitor 8 had a value of 0.15 F. The resistor 7 was 30 ohms, the resistor 10 was 100 kOhm, the resistance 11 was 20 kOhm, the capacitor 13 was 56 kpF, the breakdown element 12 had a breakdown voltage of 32 V and a holding value of 27 V, and the resistor 14 was 200 ohms. In this embodiment, the impedance of the capacitor 8 (0.15 F) thus corresponded to about 21200 ohms.
The internal impedance of the tube 4 was approximately in the operating state
EMI0002.0009
Ohm, d. H. about 240 ohms. The quotient of the impedance of the capacitor 8 (for 50 Hz) and the impedance of the tube was thus
EMI0002.0010
There was a peak voltage of around 550 V across the tube.
In FIG. 2, the mains voltage En (voltage across terminals 1 and 2 in FIG. 1) is plotted as a function of time. to represents a zero crossing of this mains voltage. This mains voltage has a maximum value at a point in time 4 that is T / 4 seconds away from to, where
EMI0002.0013
is the period of the AC supply voltage. Just before i, d. H. at time point t1, the thyristor 9 (Fig. 1) is made conductive. The current through the thyristor 9 is marked in Fig. 2 with i be. This current becomes zero at time t3. At this point in time there is a voltage Eb (about 550 V) across the lamp, due to the rapid charging of the capacitor 8 (FIG. 1).
The voltage mentioned swings out (Fig. 2) until the mains voltage is again produced across the lamp. From FIG. 2 it can be seen that with the aid of the circuit arrangement according to FIG. 1, both a comparatively long preheating current i, which lasts longer than a half cycle, and an ignition voltage (Eb) are achieved.
One advantage of the ignition device described is that the voltage available for ignition can be greater than the maximum value of the AC supply voltage. This can be explained as follows. If it is assumed that the controlled semiconductor rectifier in such an ignition device is made conductive at a point in time that is T / 4 seconds after the AC supply voltage has passed zero, then a current results through the series connection of the inductance 3, the two electrodes 5, 6 the discharge tube 4 and the controlled rectifier 9 (if the current direction of the controlled rectifier corresponds to the polarity of the mains voltage). Of course, a small current also flows through the capacitor B bridging the tube.
However, this current is negligibly small due to the comparatively large impedance of this capacitor. Since the electrodes of the discharge tube have only a low resistance, making the controlled rectifier conductive actually only means connecting an inductor to an AC voltage source. If the inductance at the time mentioned, d. H. T / 4 seconds after the zero crossing: the AC supply voltage is switched on, so the current is about
EMI0002.0023
Seconds after this zero crossing of the alternating supply voltage equals zero.
The current tries to change its direction, but is prevented from doing so by the controlled semiconductor rectifier. This actually means that the circuit in which the semiconductor rectifier is located is switched off. In other words, the short circuit across the capacitor bridging the tube is eliminated. However, because the controlled rectifier was conductive, this capacitor had no charge. But it is at the point in time at which the controlled semiconductor rectifier becomes non-conductive, i.e. H.
EMI0002.0026
Seconds after the alternating feed voltage has passed zero, the mains voltage is just at its maximum. As a result, the capacitor charges to about twice the maximum value of the mains voltage. This voltage is now produced across the ends of the discharge tube. It causes the tube to ignite.
Would the controlled rectifier at a slightly earlier point in time, e.g. B. a seconds after the zero crossing of the AC supply voltage, where a is less than T / 4, made conductive, the current flowing through the steer th rectifier would only (T-a) seconds after the mentioned zero crossing of the AC supply voltage become zero.
This is because the resistance in the circuit is so small compared to wL (where L is the value of the inductance in series with the discharge tube). The smaller a is, the closer (T-a) approaches the value T, i.e. H. the closer is the point in time of the non-conducting of the controlled semiconductor rectifier at the corresponding subsequent zero crossing of the AC supply voltage, and the lower the instantaneous value of the mains voltage at the point in time of the non-conducting of the controlled semiconductor rectifier, i.e. H.
the lower the voltage peak across the capacitor.
When the controlled rectifier becomes non-conductive 30 arc degrees before the mains voltage crosses zero
EMI0003.0001
the instantaneous mains voltage is just half the peak value of the mains voltage
EMI0003.0004
It was stated above that when the controlled rectifier becomes non-conductive, the voltage across the capacitor is increased to about twice the instantaneous value of the mains voltage. At
EMI0003.0006
thus the voltage across the capacitor 8 becomes twice the half peak value, i.e. H. to the peak value of the mains voltage.
To achieve an ignition voltage that is greater than the peak value of the mains voltage, a must therefore be greater than
EMI0003.0010
Seconds.
In a corresponding way, an upper limit for a can be derived, namely
EMI0003.0011
In view of losses, however, it turns out that a more practical upper limit is due
EMI0003.0014
is given.
From the foregoing it is therefore apparent that in the case of the ignition device described, in which the point in time of making the controlled rectifier conductive is between
EMI0003.0015
and seconds after one
EMI0003.0016
Zero crossing of the alternating supply voltage lies, the voltage across the discharge tube can be swayed above the maximum value of the mains voltage.
As a rule, the ignition device is connected to the AC supply voltage at any point in time. In this case, a transient process usually occurs during a few periods of the AC voltage before the controlled rectifier is made conductive in the specified time interval.
Since the resistance of a controlled semiconductor rectifier, when it is in the conductive state, is very small, only little heat is developed in the series circuit which connects the ends of the electrodes facing away from the AC power source.
It should also be evident from the above description that the duration of the electrode preheating current can be adjusted by using a controlled element. There is thus the possibility of setting a favorable compromise between the available voltage and pre-heating current for the ignition of the tube. In general, it is advisable to select the point in time of making the controlled rectifier conductive before T / 4 seconds after the zero crossing of the AC supply voltage.
In this case, the electrode current can flow for a relatively long time (per period of the alternating supply voltage), which means that these electrodes can be heated up quickly.
The impedance of the capacitor 8 in the series circuit bridging the tube must lie between two limits. This impedance must namely be smaller than a certain multiple of the impedance of the tube, namely smaller than 150 times the impedance of the tube in the operating state. This is necessary in order to obtain not a very brief high voltage across the tube during the ignition process, but rather a voltage which is both high and occurs across the tube for a relatively long time. The tube ignites much more reliably. A lower limit is also required for the impedance of the capacitor 8.
The impedance of the capacitor 8 must namely not be less than about 40 times the impedance of the tube in the operating state. This last requirement is necessary to prevent the current curve from deviating too much from the sinus shape while the tube is burning. This can namely reduce the service life of the tube with it. Another reason why the impedance d es capacitor 8 must not be too low lies in the fact that otherwise the above-mentioned transient process does not run as it was described above.
The ignition device, which contains elements 7 to 14 (FIG. 1), could be accommodated in a space measuring 2.5 x 3.5 x 4.5 centimeters. This ignition device can be designed as a separate component. The space required is not much larger than the space required for a glow light igniter. The electronic device described is also significantly less vulnerable than a glow light igniter.
