Process for the preparation of fluorine-containing aliphatic or cycloaliphatic compounds
The invention relates to a process for the preparation of fluorine-containing aliphatic or cycloaliphatic compounds from corresponding halogenated compounds in which the halogen is not fluorine, using a new complex catalyst.
Processes are known for the substitution of halogen or hydrogen atoms by fluorine in organic compounds. Most of these processes are unsuitable for technical purposes, however, because the resulting products are very impure and because the costs for the equipment to be used are too high. Almost all of the industrial fluorination processes currently in use use an organic halide, hydrogen fluoride and sometimes a metal halide catalyst in the liquid phase and under high pressure.
These high pressure processes consume the metal halide catalyst, they have slow reaction rates, and often the yields and purity of the products are poor. There are also known fluorination processes in the vapor phase, in which activated carbon is used as catalyst, which is impregnated with metal halides. However, these methods have the disadvantage that the life of the catalyst is very short and therefore the catalyst has to be replaced frequently because metal halide is lost from the catalyst.
The inventive method for the preparation of fluorine-containing aliphatic or cycloaliphatic compounds with up to 24 carbon atoms by reacting the corresponding halogen-containing and at least one double bond-containing compounds in which the halogen is not fluorine, with chlorine or bromine and hydrogen fluoride for 0.5 to 60 seconds at a temperature of 20 to 5000 C in the presence of a catalyst, with first a chlorination or bromination of the double bond and immediately afterwards the replacement of at least one of the halogen atoms by a fluorine atom, is now characterized in that the catalyst is a metal Aluminum fluoride complex, the metal of which belongs to group Ib, IIb, VIb or VIII of the periodic table, is used.
The halogenated aliphatic or cycloaliphatic compounds to be used in the process according to the invention can be unbranched or branched compounds which can also contain substituents other than halogen atoms.
The fluorination catalyst to be used according to the invention proves to be extremely stable and reactive. With the aid of this catalyst, the halogenated compounds can be fluorinated by continuous processes. Possible halogens which are substituted by fluorine in the process according to the invention are chlorine, bromine and iodine atoms and the reaction can be carried out either in the vapor phase or in the liquid phase. However, the reaction is preferably carried out in the vapor phase.
The aliphatic or cycloaliphatic halogenated alkenes to be used in the process according to the invention can be unbranched or branched and preferably contain 1 to about 12 carbon atoms.
Of course, partially fluorinated aliphatic compounds can be further fluorinated according to the invention provided they also contain other halogen substituents.
Examples of aliphatic and homocyclic compounds which can be fluorinated according to the invention are halogenated dienes such as hexachlorobutadiene and halogenated alkenes such as perchlorethylene and their isomers, homologues and analogs. A homocyclic starting material is z. B. Octachlorocyclopentene.
The aliphatic compounds to be used by the process according to the invention can be partially or completely halogenated. It has been found that fluorination is faster with fully halogenated compounds. In addition to the halogen substituents, other non-interfering substituents which are stable under the reaction conditions can also be present. In numerous cases, functional groups can be present as substituents on the aliphatic carbon chain, such as carbonyl groups, cyano groups, nitrile groups, sulfide groups. Hydroxyl groups or ether groups.
In the fluorination of alkenes or cycloalkenes, the compound is first halogenated by simultaneously introducing both a fluorinating agent and the halogenating agent, namely chlorine or bromine, into the reaction zone.
Since the fluorination process according to the invention is preferably carried out in the vapor phase, the aliphatic compounds which can be fluorinated most easily are those compounds which can be evaporated without decomposition at atmospheric pressure, overpressure or underpressure. However, the reaction can also be carried out in the liquid phase. The reaction conditions for the vapor phase are specifically described in the examples. Similar - conditions and ranges are adhered to when converting in the liquid phase. However, the reaction in the liquid phase preferably takes place from about 200 ° C. to the boiling point of the reaction mixture, but not above the temperature at which decomposition of the starting material occurs or at which considerable amounts of metal are lost, e.g. B. up to 500 to 6000 C for the copper complex catalyst.
Although no solvent is normally used for the liquid phase reaction, it can facilitate the reaction. Examples of such solvents are aromatic hydrocarbons, for example benzene, perfluorinated solvents, e.g. B. perfluorinated alkanes. Of course, any solvent can be used which behaves in the manner described.
The ratio of the fluorinating agent to the halogenated aliphatic compound depends on the desired product, but generally a stoichiometric to excess amount of fluorinating agent is used. An excess of more than 100% of the required amount of fluorinating agent can be used, but preferably an excess of up to about 50%.
The pressure and the temperature at which the reaction is carried out depends on the nature of the reactants used, e.g. B. on their volatility, responsiveness and stability. The temperature is normally in the range from 100 to 5000 C, preferably between 150 and 3500 C. Temperatures above 4500 C often result in a shorter catalyst life, but they are sometimes necessary to ensure a more complete conversion.
The process is normally carried out at atmospheric pressure, but it is also possible to work under positive or negative pressure.
The catalysts to be used in the process according to the invention, which are practically non-volatile and can be used at temperatures up to about 6000 ° C., are generally prepared by using hydrogen fluoride with a complex of aluminum oxide and a metal compound of group Iv, IIb, VIb or VIII for Metal-aluminum fluoride complex is implemented.
Metals of groups Ib, IIb, VIb and VIII of the Periodic Table which may be mentioned are in particular copper, silver, gold, chromium, nickel, cobalt, zinc, cadmium, iron, ruthenium, rhodium and palladium. For the sake of simplicity, specific reference is made to copper and cobalt in the description and examples.
The catalyst can e.g. In the form of small particles, granules, chips or cookies. Granular catalysts are preferred. Inert solid diluents such as graphite particles can optionally be mixed with the catalyst.
The catalyst, the optionally used diluent for the catalyst and the quantitative ratio of the reactants to the diluents used for the reactants depend on the type of reactants used and on the desired reaction products. In general, the amount of catalyst used depends on the reaction rate and residence time. Thus, in vapor phase fluorination, the catalyst is used in an amount which gives a nominal residence time of from 0.5 to about 60 seconds, preferably from 5 to about 25 seconds, resulting in a satisfactory reaction. With certain compounds, degrees of conversion up to 98% and yields in excess of 90% have been obtained.
The fluorinated aromatic compounds which can be prepared according to the invention are suitable for a wide variety of purposes; they are particularly valuable as chemical intermediates and dye intermediates, but they are also used as solvents, medicaments, herbicides or pesticides. Furthermore, many of the compounds that can be prepared according to the invention are non-corrosive and non-toxic.
The fluorinated aliphatic compounds which can be prepared according to the invention are particularly valuable as coolants and propellants for spray cans.
In the examples, parts are based on weight unless otherwise stated.
example 1
In this and the following examples, fluorinations were carried out using a tubular reactor made of nickel, the length of which was 30 times its diameter. The tubular reactor is filled with a catalyst bed up to about 80% of the internal volume of the reactor. The reactor was equipped with an evaporator to evaporate the organic feed. Both the organic feed and the fluorinating agent were introduced into the evaporator. The inside of the reactor was also equipped with a moveable thermocouple to measure the temperature of the catalyst load. The vapors emerging from the reactor were cooled in a water-cooled condenser and the product was collected.
The non-condensed gases, which go through the water cooler and the receiver, were passed through another cooler, which was cooled to about -750 ° C.
This example explains the vapor phase fluorination of perchlorethylene (C2Cl4), which is also known as tetrachlorethylene. First, 2273 parts of the fluorinated copper-aluminum oxide catalyst consisting of about 8.02% copper, 42.3 mg aluminum and 49.67% fluorine are placed in the tubular reactor. The particle size of the catalyst is such that it passes through a sieve with an internal mesh size of 1.651 mm and is retained by a sieve with an internal mesh size of 0.701 mm.
781 parts of perchlorethylene with a specific gravity of 1.612 at 240 ° C. and a refractive index of 1.5035 at 240 ° C. are passed through the evaporator and then through the catalyst bed. At the same time as the perchlorethylene, chlorine gas is fed in to chlorinate the double bond and hydrogen fluoride is passed in to replace the chlorine. The feed rate of perchlorethylene is 2.72 parts by weight / minute, the hydrogen fluoride feed rate is 1.85 parts by weight / minute, and the chlorine gas feed rate is 1.43 parts by weight for 1 minute. The gas mixture flowing through the reactor has a residence time of 19 seconds in the catalyst bed.
During the reaction, the temperature in the catalyst bed was between 250 and 4050 C; the average temperature was 3630 C. After 287 minutes, the reaction was terminated.
The organic reaction product obtained was washed with sodium hydroxide solution and then with water.
601.7 parts of product were obtained. This product had a specific gravity of 1.627 at 240 ° C. and a refractive index of 1.4695 at 240 ° C. The ultra-red analysis showed that the main component of the product was fluorinated ethane, along with unreacted perchlorethylene and hexachloroethane. The main constituent of the fluorinated compounds was tetrachloride fluoroethane.
Instead of the copper aluminum fluoride catalyst used in this example, the copper in the catalyst was replaced by a mixture of copper and cobalt by precipitating copper chloride and cobalt chloride together with sodium aluminate and then treating the copper-cobalt-aluminum oxide precipitation with hydrogen fluoride. This copper-cobalt-aluminum fluoride complex was then used for the reaction and the results obtained were as good as with the cobalt-free catalyst.
Example 2
Hexachlorobutadiene was fluorinated in the vapor phase according to Example 1 by passing it in a mixture with hydrogen fluoride and chlorine over 2240 parts of the copper aluminum fluoride catalyst. The hexachlorobutadiene used was 98% pure and had a refractive index of 1.5522 at 250 C and a specific gravity of 1.666 at 250 C. The hexachlorobutadiene was fed into the reactor at a rate of 2.51 parts / min in a mixture of 1, 56 parts / min of hydrogen fluoride and 0.78 parts / min of chlorine. The amount of chlorine introduced into the reactor was sufficient to chlorinate a double bond of the hexachlorobutadiene. The flow rate of hydrogen fluoride and hexachlorobutadiene corresponded to a molar ratio of 8.12: 1.
The temperature of the catalyst bed was between 260 and 4100 C; the average temperature was 3830 C. The average residence time of the gas mixture in the catalyst bed was 12 seconds. The reaction was carried out for 638 minutes. The product was collected in the condenser system, washed with sodium hydroxide solution and then with water.
858.8 parts of product with a refractive index of 1.3851 at 250 ° C. and a specific gravity of 1.630 at 25 ° C. were obtained.
The gas chromatographic analysis showed the following composition of the product: 36% 2,3-dichlorohexafluorobutene-2 (trans) and 31, Xo 2,3-dichlorohexafluorobutene -2 (cis). In addition, low-fluorinated products and 17% unconverted hexachlorobutadiene were present.
The procedure described in this example was repeated using an iron-aluminum fluoride catalyst. This catalyst was prepared by co-precipitating iron (III) chloride, dissolved in hydrochloric acid, with sodium aluminate solution. The resulting iron-aluminum hydroxide precipitate is then converted into the iron-aluminum fluoride complex with hydrogen fluoride. With this catalyst, equally good results are obtained in the fluorination of hexachlorobutadiene.
