  Filter element of a smoker's article
 The present invention relates to a filter element of an article for smokers, in particular cigars, cigarettes or pipes, in which a capsule containing a liquid and capable of being broken is adjacent to a material capable of absorbing the liquid from the capsule after breaking thereof, so that it is fully wetted, and which is characterized in that said material is a spongy, compressed dry material which expands under the influence of the liquid and in that buffers separate this tobacco material of the article and the smoker's mouth.



   The spongy, compressed and dry material can be either natural or synthetic. It is preferably finely divided, but may be in the form of compressed sponge fibers.



   Pulling through the moistened filter element is easy, the smoke is fresher when it reaches the smoker's mouth, and it also has lower tar and nicotine content.



   The appended drawing represents, by way of example, particular embodiments of the filter element, object of the invention.



   Fig. 1 is an enlarged elevation of a cigarette including a first embodiment of the element.

   In these figures, the number 10 indicates a cigarette having the usual paper envelope, with the exception of the tip 11 which is made of an elastic and impermeable material.



   While the body of the cigarette is essentially filled with tobacco 12, the end of the cigarette has a tubular chamber 13 which forms the interior of the tip 11.



   A capsule 14 filled with a liquid, for example water, and disposed inside the tubular chamber 13, is made of any suitable material, such as brittle plastic, which can be easily broken when pressed. sufficient is applied thereto, or of a flexible but impermeable material which can also be ruptured by such pressure.



   Adjacent to this capsule 14 is housed in the chamber 13 of compressed and dry spongy material 15 which may be finely divided or form a body of a suitable shape which entirely or partially surrounds the capsule 14. Plugs 16 of a fibrous material or another absorbent material, allowing the passage of air or smoke, are arranged at the ends of the chamber 13. One of these stoppers is adjacent to the tobacco and serves to protect the latter against contact with moisture. after the capsule has broken, and the other stopper, placed at the end of the cigarette near the smoker's lips, serves to prevent contact of his lips or his tongue with the spongy material both before and after the humidification of the latter.



   A similar construction is used in a filter element for cigars. The chamber 13 at the end can obviously in this case have a different shape from that of a filter for cigarettes which is generally cylindrical.



   A filter element arranged to be inserted into the stem of a pipe or into a cigar holder or cigarette smoke has the same components, i.e. a capsule containing the liquid, preferably water, and adjacent to it the compressed and dried spongy material, extending under the influence of water, and at each end of the element a permeable plug of fibrous material, by which, on the one hand, the moisture released into the spongy and stretchable material is held in the filter element and, on the other hand, the smoke cooled and cleaned by the damp sponge can be drawn through the filter element from the burning tobacco to the smoker's mouth .

  When the filter element is to be used in a pipe or cigar or cigarette holder, the capsule must be broken to release the liquid before the filter element is introduced into the pipe or cigar or cigarette holder.

CLAIM A filter element of a smoker's article, in which a capsule containing liquid and capable of being shattered is adjacent to a material capable of absorbing liquid from the capsule after rupture thereof, so that it is entirely moistened, characterized in that said material is a dry, spongy, compressed material which expands under the influence of the absorbed liquid and in that tampons separate this material from the tobacco from the article and from the smoker's mouth.
