Abstract
Agent of high absorption capacity for binding substances which are insoluble in water, (oil impurities), contains absorbent organic and/or inorganic substances and hydrophobic silica which has been rendered hydrophobic by treatment with organosilicon cpds. such as organohalogen silanes or which has been prepared by the prohydrolysis of silicon tetrafluoride. Sawdust or cork powder are preferably used as the absorbent organic substances since they float in water and have a high capacity, particularly for oils. Suitable absorbent inorganic substances are natural or synthetic silicates or silicas. The hydrophobic silica is preferably added to the mixture in quantities of 4-20% based on the absorbent substance.
Description
MAIN PATENT High absorbency agent to bind water-insoluble substances
The invention relates to an agent of high absorbency, containing absorbent organic and / or inorganic substances, for binding non-water-soluble substances, which is characterized by increased absorption of non-water-soluble substances.
For many purposes, e.g. To keep organic or inorganic contaminants suspended in water, to incorporate highly dispersed fillers into organic media and to remove oil contaminants from soils and waters, it is desirable to give these substances organophuic or hydrophobic properties or to remove oil contaminants with such hydrophobicized substances .
So it is known, e.g. B. powdered precipitated silica by treatment with suitable organic silicon compounds, e.g. Alkylchlorosilanes to be rendered hydrophobic in the form of a coating. Here, the chlorosilane also reacts with water adsorbed on the surface of the silica, forming hydrochloric acid. The silica which has been made hydrophobic in this way must then be freed from the hydrochloric acid formed. In the case of powdered silica, the hydrophobization was also carried out using silicone oils. To do this, however, the dry powdery silica must be suspended in an organic liquid. It is also known that pyrogenic silica can also be modified in its surface by treatment with silanes so that it has hydrophobic properties.
Minerals of volcanic origin, which had been expanded and rendered hydrophobic by thermal post-treatment, have also been used to remove oil contamination from soils and bodies of water.
Both the hydrophobized silicas and the volcanic minerals mentioned last are too expensive and therefore unsuitable for the removal of oil contamination or the purification of waste water by holding the substances leading to contamination in suspension due to their relatively complex production.
The invention was therefore based on the task of specifying a means of high absorption capacity, which contains absorbent organic and / or inorganic substances and is characterized by an increased absorption capacity of non-water-soluble substances.
The invention is characterized in that it contains hydrophobic precipitated and / or hydrophobic pyrogenically obtained finely divided silica together with other absorbent organic and / or inorganic substances for binding organic, water-insoluble substances. Precipitated or pyrogenically obtained silicas which have been rendered hydrophobic by treatment with organohalosilanes have proven to be particularly suitable. However, it is also possible to dispense with this additional process of hydrophobing if, as an additive to the absorbent materials, a hydrolysis or
Silica obtained from the pyrolysis of silicon tetrafluoride and which is directly hydrophobic from the manufacture is used. This can be added to the absorbent materials without preparation as a raw product, as is the case during manufacture.
As absorbent organic substances, wood or cork flour is expediently used, since these substances are buoyant due to their low specific weight and are known to be characterized by high absorbency, especially for oils.
Natural or synthetically obtained silicates or silicas are suitable as absorbent inorganic substances, which can be suspended by themselves with water, but are kept in a buoyant state by adding the hydrophobic sio2 additives used according to the invention.
To produce the absorbent, it is sufficient to mix the absorbent organic and / or inorganic substances mentioned with hydrophobic silica, the individual particles being enveloped by the hydrophobic silica without losing their absorbency. The hydrophobic silica is expediently added to the mixture in amounts of 2-100 / 0, preferably 4-20%, calculated on the absorbent substance.
The agent according to the invention is suitable, for. B.
to remove harmful substances that have escaped from collecting tanks, in particular fuel or heating oils, and also to keep other non-water-soluble substances suspended, such as those that occur in coking plants, in soot production and in plastics production, etc. as contamination of waste water.
By introducing the agent according to the invention into the waste water or directly into the sewage treatment plant, the impurities are captured and can be removed as a foam-like coating from the waste water.
In the case of leaked heating oils or fuel oils, the agent according to the invention can be mixed with this and burned after collecting, so that a complete mixing of the oils is guaranteed and an introduction into the earth, for. B. near what; catchment areas, is prevented.
Another possible application arises when using wood flour, cork flour, kieselguhr, synthetic silicas as fillers for organic media, e.g. B. in plastics processing, building materials and rubber production, as these fillers enable easier and permanent incorporation by adding hydrophobic silica.
