I'éthanol, le butanol, etc.
Exemple I

Composition for oil and water repellency of non-textile materials
Swiss Patent No. 455730 relates to the preparation of new mixed olefinic fluorinated esters monomers as well as their homo- and copolymers with each other or with copolymerizable olefinic compounds.
The homopolymers and copolymers thus obtained have advantageous oleophobic properties, which make it possible to envisage their use. for the treatment of any porous or non-porous material which it is desired to protect against soiling and to make it resistant to wetting by water, vegetable, animal or mineral oils or grease, hydrocarbons, organic solvents. However, the water-repellent properties of these fluorinated homopolymers and copolymers are not very marked.
Currently, there is a need for sizing compositions capable of rendering porous materials not only waterproof, but also resistant to greasy soils. In practice, it is furthermore highly desirable that such compositions exhibit a character of permanence, so that articles impregnated with said compositions remain impermeable to water and grease, even in the event that the substrate in question should be subjected to washing. with an aqueous bath containing soap and / or detergents, or dry cleaning with solvents.
By combining the polymerized olefinic fluorinated compounds described in the aforementioned patent with suitable substances, it is possible to prepare new compositions which remarkably satisfy the aforementioned requirements with regard to the oil and water-repellent properties and their permanence.
The present invention relates to a composition for the oil repellency and hydrogugation of non-textile materials which contains:
- a constituent (A) chosen from the group consisting
both olefin mixed ester homopolymers
Fluorinated nics having the formula R'CO2-Y-O2CR "
in which R'CO2 represents an acid residue
perfluoroalkanoic acid,
R "CO2 a residue of polymeric alkenoic acid
sand,
Y a divalent aliphatic, aromatic or
aliphatico-aromatic whose chain can be
interrupted by oxygen atoms,
and copolymers selected from the group consisting
both as copolymers of said olefin mixed esters
fluorinated nics with each other and with copolymers of said
olefinic mixed esters fluorinated with monomers
copolymerizable selected from the class consisting of
alkyl acrylates,
alkyl methacrylates, acrylamide
and methacrylamide, mixed with
a constituent (B) consisting of at least one
copolymer chosen from acry copolymers
alkyl lates and alkyl methacrylates with a
olefinically unsaturated compound having a
reactive group selected from N-methyl groups
olic, N-alkoxymethyl, aldehyde and
epoxy, etgou
- a constituent (C) consisting of at least one
aminoplast resin.
Hereinafter, examples of execution of the composition according to the invention will be described.
As component (C), a resin based on melamine or urea and formaldehyde is preferably used, or a reaction product of such a resin with alcohols, in particular a urea-formaldehyde or an alkylated melamine-formaldehyde resin.
A preferred composition contains by weight 1 to 50% and preferably 3 to 20% of component (A), 0 to 99%, preferably 0 to 60%, of component (B) and 0 to 99%, preferably 0 to 60% of component (C), at least one of components (B) or (C) being present.
Fluorinated olefinic mixed esters and homopolymers and copolymers of these compounds, which can form component (A), as well as the preparation of these substances are described in the aforementioned Swiss patent. Component (A) may be in the form of a solution in organic solvents or of an aqueous emulsion or dispersion generally containing 1 to 30% by weight of homo- and / or copolymers.
Component (B) may comprise at least one copolymer of acrylate and / or alkyl methacrylates with an olefinically unsaturated derivative having an N-methylol, N-alkoxymethyl, aldehyde or epoxy function.
Examples of acrylates and / or methacrylates which can be used for the preparation of these copolymers are acrylates of hexyl, 2-ethyl-hexyl, n-heptyl, n-octyl, n-nonyl, etc. and methacrylates of butyl, isobutyl, amyl, n-hexyl, n-heptyl, noctyl, 2-ethylhexyl, n-nonyl, etc.
As an example of an olefinically unsaturated derivative having an N-methylol, N-alkoxymethyl, aldehyde or epoxy function which can be copolymerized with the abovementioned esters, there may be mentioned N-methylolacrylamide and its alkylated derivatives such as N-methoxymethylacrylamide, N- methylol-methacrylamide and its nikylated derivatives such as N-methoxy-methylmethacrylamide, N-methylolmaleimide, acrolein, methacrolein, glycidyl acrylate and methacrylate, etc. Component B preferably contains 90 to 99.5% by weight of acrylates and / or methacrylates and 10 to 0.5% by weight of olefinically unsaturated derivative having an N-methylol, N-alkoxymethyl, aldehyde or epoxy function.
Component (B) can be prepared according to the methods in use for polymerization in organic solution, in emulsion or in aqueous dispersion in the presence of conventional polymerization catalysts such as inorganic or organic peroxides, hydroperoxides, peracids, persalts, diazocompounds, redoc systems, etc. The polymerization in emulsion or in aqueous dispersion can be carried out in the presence of anionic and / or nonionic surfactants, emulsion stabilizers, etc. Component (B) can be in the form of an organic solution, an emulsion or an aqueous dispersion containing 2 to 40% by weight of dry matter.
Component (C) consists of at least one aminoplast resin, chosen from the polymer products obtained by reaction of amino compounds, such as melamine and urea, with aldehydes, such as formaldehyde, and optionally alcohols, such as methanol,
Ethanol, butanol, etc. These resins can be prepared according to the usual methods. These resins are preferably used in the form of aqueous solutions or emulsions, or in the form of solutions in organic solvents. These solutions or emulsions can contain 20 to 80% by weight of dry matter.
As indicated above, the preferred compositions contain by weight 1 to 50%, preferably 3 to 20% of component (A), 0 to 99%, preferably 0 to 60%, of component (B) and 0 to 99%, preferably 0 to 60%, of component (C), at least one of components (B) and (C) being present.
In fact, these compositions usually additionally contain either solvents or water and surfactants, emulsion stabilizers, etc. They can be prepared by mixing together solutions, emulsions or dispersions of constituents (A) + (B) and / or (C) in the proportions defined above.
The compositions thus obtained can be supplied as they are in commerce, or they can be concentrated by removing part of the solvent or water by evaporation, or they can be diluted by adding a certain amount of solvent or water. 'water.
In general, the sum of the essential constituents in the solutions, emulsions or dispersions represents 0.1 to 50% by weight, preferably 0.5 to 35% by weight.
The compositions can also be used in the form of aerosols.
In order to promote the crosslinking and the attachment of the water-repellent and oil-repellent coatings to the materials to be water-repellent and oil-repellent, a catalyst such as, for example, zinc nitrate hexahydrate, ammonium nitrate, etc., is generally added to the compositions in one amount representing 1 to 30% by weight of the total of constituents (A) + (B) and! or (C).
With a view to use for the impregnation of non-textile materials to be water-repellent and oil-repellent, the solutions, emulsions or dispersions described can be diluted either with an organic solvent or with water. The solutions, emulsions or dispersions thus diluted are called baths. The concentration of these baths obviously varies according to the nature of the material to be impregnated, the weight of water-repellent and oil-repellent resin that it is desired to fix on the material, etc. In general, the sum of the essential constituents in the oil and water repellent baths represents 0.1 to 20% and preferably 0.5 to 10% by weight of the baths.
The non-textile, porous and non-porous materials which can be treated with these baths with a view to oil and water-repellent them are for example paper, wood, aluminum, steel, brick, asbestos, asbestos-cement materials. concrete, leather, hides, etc. These materials can be made impermeable to water and to grease by spraying, dipping or impregnating with the solutions, emulsions or dispersions described. They can then be dried at a temperature between 15 and 100) C to evaporate the water or the solvents, then they can be subjected to a temperature of 130 to 1800 C for a period which varies from 5 minutes to 15 seconds to fix durable coating on the material.
As one of the most important uses of the compositions described is the water repellency and oil repellency of paper, the following description relates more particularly, but not limited to, the treatment of this material.
The paper is impregnated in the bath as described above and then squeezed between rollers. Depending on the pressure under which the paper is squeezed between the rollers, the paper absorbs a greater or lesser amount of bath. If, for example, after impregnation and squeezing the weight of the paper has increased by 70%, its squeezing rate is said to be 70%.
The paper is then dried in air for about 30 minutes or in a dryer at 1000 ° C. for a few minutes to evaporate the solvent or the water.
Then, the paper is brought to a temperature of 130 to 1800 C for a period of between 5 minutes and 15 seconds, the duration of the treatment being shorter the higher the temperature.
The compositions described exhibit significant advantages over the fluorinated compositions of the state of the art. Thus, excellent oil repellency can be obtained by using a much smaller amount of fluoropolymer, resulting in lower cost of the oil repellency treatment. On the other hand, the applied coatings exhibit excellent resistance to washing with soapy water and dry cleaning with solvents. Finally, the compositions make it possible to obtain excellent water repellency. These properties will be demonstrated in the examples which follow.
The demonstration of the oleophobic properties of the compositions is carried out using the scale of E. J.
Grajeck and W. H. Petersen (Textile Research Journal, 32 (1962), 323). In this test, one begins by preparing paraffin-hydrocarbon mixtures (n-heptane) in proportions by volume ranging from 0% to 100% of paraffin and respectively from 100% to 0% of hydrocarbon, each mixture thus obtained being assigned an oleophobicity coefficient according to the table below:
Hydrocarbon
Paraffin oil coefficient (n-heptane)
of oleophobia in o / o in í (,
50,100 t)
60 90 10
70 80 20
80 70 30
90 60 40
100 50 50
110 40 60
120 30 70
130 20 80
140 10 90
150 0 100
The higher the coefficient, the less the material tends to be stained by the mixture of oil and solvent.
For the test, a drop of one of the above mixtures is deposited on the substrate treated with the oleophobic compound and the drop of composition richest in hydrocarbon is sought, the beading of which is maintained for at least 3 minutes on the substrate. , that is to say without entering the latter. The oleophobicity test is considered satisfactory when the coefficient amounts to at least 90 and it is obviously all the better as said coefficient is greater.
To demonstrate the water-repellent properties of the compositions, use is made of the method described in Belgian standard 593.06 for the determination of the degree of water-repellency by the spray test (Spray
Test); the results are expressed by arbitrary rating.
80 being the lower limit tolerated, 90 being an acceptable rating and 100 being an excellent rating.
Example I
Kraft paper weighing 80 g / m0 is used in this example. A sample of this paper is impregnated in a bath containing per liter, 30 g of aqueous emulsion at 10% of cuttlefish material of a homopolymer of 2,2-dimethylpropane-1,3-diol perfluorooctanoate methacrylate, 30 g of aqueous emulsion 20% dry matter of a 2-ethylhexyl and N-methylolacrylamide methacrylate copolymer (96% and 4% respectively), 15 g of aqueous emulsion 20% dry matter of an acrylate copolymer of 2 -ethylhexyl and N-methylolacrylamide (96% and 4% respectively) and 34.4 g of a 70% aqueous solution of dry matter of the methylated melamine-formaldehyde resin, marketed under the name Synkamine
MF.
The bath also contains 8 g of zinc nitrate hexahydrate as a catalyst. The paper thus treated is then expressed at a squeezing rate of 60%, then dried in air for about 30 minutes and finally it is treated for 3 minutes at 1300 C. After this treatment, the paper contains 0.18 g of fluorinated compound and 2.17g of total resin per 100g of paper.
The oleophobicity obtained corresponds to the value 110. In addition, when a 3 x 10 cm strip of treated paper is suspended vertically, so that the lower end is immersed by approximately 3 mm in peanut oil. , it is observed that after 24 hours, there is no rise of oil in the mass of the paper. On the other hand. if this same test is applied to a sample of untreated Kraft paper, an immediate rise of the peanut oil in the mass of the paper is observed and after 24 hours, the paper is fully impregnated throughout its mass.
Example 2
Example of treatment of brick, wood, asbestem, aluminum and mild steel.
We use a solution which contains per liter,
18 g aqueous emulsion of metha homopolymer
2,2-dimethylpropane perfluorooctanoate crylate
diol -1.3 to 10% dry matter,
52g of aqueous metha copolymer emulsion
2-ethylhexyl and N-methylolacrylamide crylate
(96/4) at 20% dry matter,
50 g of a 70 5S aqueous solution of dry matter
a methylated melamine-formaldehyde resin com
marketed under the name Synkamine MF and
5 g of zinc nitrate hexahydrate.
This solution is then sprayed (by means of a compressed air gun of the type commonly used for the application of paints) on bricks and asbestos-cement panels. For materials such as aluminum, iron and wood, these are immersed in the solution described above. Thus treated, these materials are dried for 15 minutes at 1100 C and treated for 10 minutes at 1600 C.
After this treatment, the materials have very good oil and water repellent properties. Below are the results of the water-repellency (Spray-test) and oil-repellency tests as described above:
