Process for the purification of surface water and process water through clarification
The invention relates to a method for clarifying surface water or process water, whereby drinking water can be produced or process water can be treated before it is drained.
Increasing the capacity and economy of the known vertical flow water purification systems is an important technical task. In practice it often happens that the amount of purified water has to be regulated as required, and the known methods are not sufficient to regulate the water throughput sufficiently suitable. Another important task is to eliminate the relatively toxic and expensive synthetic chemicals used in making drinking water.
The present invention aims, on the one hand, to develop a new method for clarifying surface water and process water by means of a process which is more economical than the known processes. The new method also makes it possible to adapt the water throughput to the water demand and at the same time to replace the synthetic polyelectrolytes used in water clarification with cheaper substances of natural origin.
The present method for cleaning surface water and process water by clarifying using trivalent metal salts is characterized in that the clarification of the raw water to be cleaned in the presence of trivalent metal salts and a solid granular clarifying aid with a grain size of 10 to 200 microns and a specific surface of 100 to 500 cm% g is carried out, after which, after the purified water has been obtained, the clarification aid is separated from the foreign substances contained in the raw water and, if necessary, kept in circulation in the water clarification system.
An advantageous embodiment of the present method provides that the clarification of the raw water to be purified is carried out in the presence of trivalent metal salts and a solid granular clarifying aid of the defined grain size and specific surface area as well as substances of natural origin and higher molecular weight. A solid, preferably mineral-like substance is used as a clarifying aid, the grain size of which is 10-200 microns, specific surface area 100-500 cm (according to Lea Nurse).
Quartz sand of a corresponding grain size is preferably used as a clarifying aid.
A favorable embodiment for separating the foreign substances contained in the raw water from the solid, granular clarifying agents is to use a hydrocyclone battery.
Carboxymethyl starches, alginates or pectins are preferably used as substances of natural origin and with a higher molecular weight. The amount of clarifying aid is generally set within the limit values of 0.1 and 15 g / l.
The invention is based on the knowledge that the stable operation of the water clarification reactors or water purification systems, free of quality fluctuations, is ensured by the presence of the granular, mineral-like auxiliary substances added together with the traditional water-clarifying chemicals and adjusted to optimal concentration, which substance is recovered almost without loss can be. In addition to ensuring uniform quality, it was surprisingly found that a combination of inorganic, hydrolyzing metal salts and a granular, mineral-like auxiliary, e.g.
Quartz sand, the capacity, d. H. the performance of the known water purification systems can be increased by 100-120%. The method according to the invention enables good utilization of the waterworks at low cost and at the same time ensures that, in the event of increasing water requirements, the use of further additives of natural origin of the polysaccharide type can increase or regulate the performance of the waterworks with simple means.
With regard to the flocculation effect, the polysaccharide products based on natural raw materials come from the effects of synthetic chemicals, e.g. B. of the polyacrylic type, close to or exceed these, where they meet the strictest regulations in terms of hygiene.
The following groups of compounds of the polysaccharide type were used to increase the flocculation effect:
Alginates (polyalgic acid and its salts, e.g. Ca-,
Na, K and NH salts)
Cellulose derivatives:
Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and its acid amide
Cellulose phosphate
Cellulose sulfate
Starch derivatives:
Carboxymethyl starch and its acid amide
Starch sulfate
Starch phosphate
Pectin (polygalacturonic acid and its derivatives)
In addition to all these compounds, other polysaccharide derivatives naturally also exert a similar effect, provided that their functional groups are identical to those mentioned. In addition to the compounds of the polysaccharide type, glue and gelatin also have a beneficial effect.
In the following experiments, the effectiveness of the method according to the invention was compared with known methods.
In experiments, the following compound of the polysaccharide type was produced: Potato starch was treated with 30% sodium hydroxide solution and the obtained solution was reacted with monochloroacetic acid or with the sodium salt thereof, and the starch-ether (carboxymethyl starch) thus obtained is used as an additive. Similarly, carboxymethyl cellulose can be produced by the reaction of soda cellulose and monochloroacetic acid.
The clarification tests were carried out according to the provisions of the jar test: 1 liter of raw Danube water was measured into each of eleven glasses, which were provided with stirrers with variable, low speed.
The samples designated with numbers 1-11 were admixed with chemicals and auxiliaries according to the table below: Sample No. 1: raw Danube water, without chemicals Sample No. 2: 30 mg / 1 aluminum sulfate Sample No. 3: 30 mg / 1 aluminum sulfate, 5 mg / l ferric chloride, 1.5 mg / 1 starch ether sample no.4: 30 mg / l aluminum sulfate, 5 mg / l ferric chloride, 1.8 mg / l starch ether sample no.5: 30 mg / l aluminum sulphate, 5 mgp ferric chloride, 2 mg / t starch-ether sample no.6: 30 mg / l aluminum sulphate, 5 mg / l ferric chloride, 2.2 mg / l starch-ether sample no.7:
30 mg / l aluminum sulfate, 5 mg / l ferric chloride, 2.5 mgp starch-ether sample No. 8: 30 mg / l aluminum sulfate, 5 mg / 1 ferric chloride, 1.7 mg / l starch-ether as well
4 g / l 20-100 micron grain size of quartz sand, sample No. 9: 30 mg / l aluminum sulfate, 0.2 mg / l polyacrylamide, 4 g / l 20-100 micron grain size of quartz sand, sample No. 10: 40 mg / l aluminum sulfate, 4 g / l 20 to
100 micron grain size
Quartz sand sample No. 11: 30 mg / l aluminum sulfate, 5 mgp ferric chloride, 1 mg / l alginate, 4 g / l 20-100
Micron grain size quartz sand.
The quality (the suspended matter content) of the raw water and the quality (purity) of the test samples treated in various ways were measured with a Pulfrich photometer fitted with a turbidity measuring attachment and the results were given in terms of the relative degree of turbidity. The turbidity level of the starting raw water was 110. The series consisting of 11 samples was conditioned for 2 minutes by means of rapid stirring and then for 13 minutes by means of slow stirring (50-60 rpm) and allowed to stand for 30 minutes according to instructions - for the purpose of settling.
At the end of the settlement period, the turbidity of the individual samples was as follows:
Sample # 1: 106
Sample # 2:47
Sample # 3:32
Sample # 4:30
Sample # 5:25
Sample # 6:17
Sample # 7:18
Sample # 8:10
Sample No. 9: 8
Sample No. 10:36
Sample # 11:10
The same series of experiments was carried out according to the method described above, with the difference that instead of starch-ether, Tylose or commercially available carboxymethyl cellulose and alginate were used. The results practically agree with the values given in the table, with the difference that the optimum amount of carboxymethyl cellulose was 6 mg / l and that of alginate was 1 mg / l.
On the basis of the tests, it can be established that rapid clearing which takes place during a short dwell time can be ensured by means of the method according to the invention.
In the case of sample no. 8, it was also noticed that the flake formation takes place very quickly and that the flakes of low specific gravity, which tend to flow upwards, settle on the bottom of the test vessel in a very short time (within one minute) due to the action of quartz sand addition.
The process according to the invention was carried out on an industrial scale in the following manner: the diameter of the reactor used with vertical flow and with contact sludge filter (modified reactor of the Graver type) is 17 m, its volume is 1100 m 3. In the course of the operational test, 35 mgp aluminum sulfate, 5-7 g / m3 ferric chloride and 1.8 g / m3 starch-ether were added. The starch ether was added in the form of a 1% proprietary solution.
In the tests, the degree of turbidity of the raw water used was approximately 100, that of the clarified water was approximately 15. The degree of turbidity of the filtered water was 4. The output of the sewage treatment plant was 36,000 m3 / day. The reactor was fitted with a sand pump and a hydrocyclone battery, and the introduced quartz sand was circulated. The amount of quartz sand circulating in the sewage treatment plant was 8 tons. In the same plant, tests were also carried out with the addition of alginate, namely 1 g / m3 alginate, 35 g / mS aluminum sulfate, 5 g / m3 ferric chloride and 8 tons of quartz sand were kept in circulation in the clarification plant. The output of the sewage treatment plant was also 36,000 ma / day.
The degree of turbidity of the clarified water fluctuated between 13 and 20, the degree of turbidity of the filter water was 4. It should be noted that the above sewage treatment plant, operated according to the known technology (using aluminum sulphate and without quartz sand), only 8-10,000 m3 per day Generated water.
Another operational test was also carried out in order to be able to determine which performance could be achieved in the above system by adding aluminum sulfate and ferric chloride chemicals by means of quartz sand circulation without adding polyelectrolyte. In the course of the experiment, water of the same quality as described above was obtained, the maximum achievable output being 24,000 m8 / day.
