Ruler for determining and controlling the notch point in archery
Determining the notch point, i.e. the position of the tip of the arrow on the bowstring, is of the utmost importance for the accuracy of the shot.
This notch point is determined by the angle formed by the arrow resting, on the one hand, on a support affixed to the body of the bow and, on the other hand, against the string of the latter and the string it -even. Experience has shown that this angle should be equal to or greater than 900 depending on personal shooting technique. As is known, the diameter of the arrows, as well as the slotted ends intended to be attached to them, vary according to the manufacturers. The horizontal, that is to say the ideal position that the arrow must occupy in the shooting position on the bow, is thus dependent on the shape of the tips, since there may be a space between the diameter of the arrow and the underside of the nozzle.
In addition, the fulcrum of the arrow on the arrow rest affixed to the body of the bow is also dependent on the diameter of the arrow, which has a direct influence on the position of the arrow on the string.
The instruments currently on the world market, intended to allow the determination of the notch point, are flat and do not take into account the diameter of the arrow, nor the configuration of the tip.
They are therefore unsuitable for the precise determination of the notch point.
The ruler for determining and controlling the notch point in archery, according to the invention, is intended precisely to remedy this drawback.
It includes an elongated body provided with two attachment points to allow its suspension from the bowstring, this body bearing a graduation. This strip is characterized by the fact that its body has means for guiding the arrow with a view to determining the notch point on the string. Preferably, these guide means comprise at least one face perpendicular to the general plane of the strip and square with respect to the cord passing through the attachment points.
The appended drawing represents, schematically and by way of example, two embodiments of the strip according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is a general view, in elevation, of a bow and the arrow ready for firing.
Fig. 2 is a view on a larger scale of the arrow.
Fig. 3 is a view of the arrow in a plane perpendicular to that of FIG. 2.
Fig. 4 is a section through the arrow in position on the support affixed to the body of the bow.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the strip according to the invention in position on an arc.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view along VI-VI of FIG. 5.
Fig. 7 is a second embodiment of the strip.
Fig. 1 clearly shows the position of the notch point 1 of an arrow 2 resting at 3 on the body 4 of the bow, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, at point 1 against the string 5. C It is precisely the angle a formed between the arrow 2 and the string 5 which is of the utmost importance for the accuracy of the shot. In general, this angle is chosen slightly greater than 900.
Fig. 2 shows an arrow 2 whose body is cylindrical and of a given diameter, while the tip 6 of this arrow 2 has a different shape. Furthermore, the thickness of the tip 6 in its end part, in which the notch 7 is formed, is generally thinner than the diameter of the tip. It is precisely the space 8 existing between the plane tangent to the arrow and the facing face 9 of the end piece 6 which creates difficulties for the precise determination of the notch point 1 on the string 5. Another difficulty is created due to the different diameters given to arrows 2. In fact, as shown in FIG. 4, representing an arrow 2 in the support 3 arranged in the body 4 of the arc, the geometric axis of the arrow 2 will vary in position depending on the diameter of the latter, as will the fulcrum 10 of this arrow 2 on the arc 4.
The strip shown in fig. 5 and 6 comprises an elongate body 11, preferably of molded material such as synthetic plastics. This body 11 is provided with two attachment points 12 allowing the suspension of the strip 11 to the string 5 of the bow. This rule has means for guiding the arrow 2 on it. These guide means are formed, in the example shown, by a face 13 of a projection 14 integral with the strip 11. This face 13 is perpendicular to the general plane of the strip 11 and square with respect to the string. 5 passing through the attachment points 12. A graduation 15 is marked on the body of the strip 11, the zero point of which is located in the extension of the plane passing through the face 13 of the projection 14.
It is therefore against this face 13 that the arrow 2 must be kept applied for the determination of the notch point 1, while the arrow is pressed at 3 on the body 4 of the arc. The graduation 15 also makes it possible to place and control other reference points common in archery, such as the position of a pacifier 16 and a visette 17.
To facilitate the reuse of such a strip, it is advantageous to provide the latter with means for fixing the boom 2 against the guide face 13. In the embodiment shown in FIG. 5, these means are formed of an elastic tongue 18 cut from the material forming the body of the strip 11. The arrow 2 must therefore be forced under the tongue 18 which will keep it pressed precisely against the face 13.
As a variant, this tongue 18 could, of course, be formed of a metal leaf spring partially embedded in the plastic material forming the body of the strip 11.
In the second embodiment, shown in FIG. 7, the means for fixing the boom 2 against the face 13 of the projection 14 formed on the strip 11 comprise a push tab 19 capable of sliding on a screw 20 for fixing said push tab against the body of the strip 11 This screw 20 must therefore be loosened to allow the engagement of the arrow 2 against the face 13, after which the arrow is blocked against said face 13 by pushing the tab 19 against the arrow and by locking the screw 20.
Of course, the graduation 15 can be any, either a millimeter graduation, that is to say decimal, or a graduation according to the units of measurement in use in Anglo-Saxon countries, or even according to a graduation established arbitrarily.
As a variant, of course, the means for guiding the boom 2, instead of being constituted by a single face 13, could be formed of two projections of the type of the projection 14 formed at a distance from one another on the body 11 of the strip, the faces 13 of each of these projections 14 determining the plane tangent to the arrow 2 passing through the zero point of the graduation 15.
