Aluminum alloy The invention relates to an aluminum alloy with improved casting properties and a method for its production.
The properties of eutectic aluminum-silicon alloys that have been modified by the addition of sodium are well known and such alloys are widely used in the manufacture of castings.
However, these alloys have certain disadvantages for this field of application, which consist in the fact that the viscosity increases and thus the flowability decreases with an increase in the sodium content of the alloy, and the alloy quickly changes its modifying properties due to the loss of sodium from the Melt loses due to volatilization, the alloy continues to show variable casting properties due to variable surface tension and flow properties.
The alloy thus tends to form shrinkage cavities in the interior of a casting and shows, in particular, variable shrinkage from approach to approach of the alloy.
The aluminum-silicon alloy, modified in the normal way with sodium, has a surface tension that changes in the range of 600-800 dynes / cm and increases rapidly to higher values as soon as the sodium is volatilized from the melt. Furthermore, the formation of excessively thick and tough dross films on the melts in this alloy class, especially where the amount of sodium is above 0.020%, is well known.
The object underlying the invention is thus that an aluminum alloy is created that has improved casting properties due to its own low and practically constant surface tension, due to increased and practically constant flow properties, and a markedly reduced tendency to form dross.
According to the invention, this object can be achieved by controlling the addition of surface-active substances which modify and improve the surface tension, the flowability and the dross formation of the alloys as they are currently used for the manufacture of castings.
The aluminum alloy according to the invention is characterized in that it contains 10-15% by weight of silicon, 0.003-0.040% by weight of sodium and a total of at most 1% by weight of at least one of the following additives: lithium, titanium, bismuth , Lead or rare earth metals.
The alloy according to the invention preferably contains 0.003-0.040% lithium, the amount of each of the additives not being greater than 0.50%.
The silicon content is preferably 11.5-13%, the sodium content 0.005-0.020%, the lithium content 0.005-0.015%,
with regard to the impurities iron preferably in an amount of not more than 0.40% and copper, magnesium, manganese, zinc, nickel, chromium, tin, calcium, vanadium,
Gallium and boron are present in an amount preferably not more than 0.10%.
The process according to the invention for producing this alloy is characterized in that an aluminum-silicon alloy containing 10-15% silicon is incorporated with 0.003-0.040 0lo sodium and at least one of the following additives:
Lithium, titanium, bismuth, lead or a rare earth metal, the amount of each of the additives not being greater than 0.50% and the total amount of the additives not being greater than 1.0%.
The additives of sodium and / or lithium can either in metal form or as chemical connec tions, such as. B. sodium and / or lithium salts, he follow, the sodium and lithium additives in the molten aluminum-silicon alloy ent either one after the other or at the same time in a kombi-ned additive can be introduced. .
The method can also include the addition of one or more of the following elements before or after the addition of the sodium and lithium or equivalen th product: titanium, bismuth, lead, the rare earth elements and any alloy or chemical equivalent thereof in individual amounts up to 0.50%, the total amount not exceeding 1.0%,
and the preferred amount of each ingredient is 0.005%. Alloys of the above compositions show a modified structure with significantly lower amounts of sodium added than have previously been used for the modification,
and the modified structure is maintained for a substantial period of time after the sodium has evaporated from the melt.
Since the surface tension has a significant influence on the modification effects and thus on the type of solidification, which in turn causes the formation of shrinkage cavities, the alloys according to the invention offer improved casting properties compared to the alloys according to the prior art.
Because of the low addition of sodium, these alloys do not suffer from the pronounced increase in viscosity that occurs with alloys according to the prior art when sodium is added in amounts of more than 0.010%. This factor combined with low surface tension enables an improved and constant flowability of the alloy.
This alloy class normally shows a flowability as measured by the flow length due to the action of gravity along a channel of 12.7-15.2 cm (while the alloy according to the invention has a constant flow length of 25.4-28 cm) . This increased fluidity significantly aids in filling intricate cavities in the mold, particularly those that have thin cross sections, and assists in supplying the alloy to solidify, thereby reducing the formation of shrink cavities.
With regard to the formation of shrink cavities, a measure of this inclination results in an alloy through the centerline feed resistance (CFR). The normal alloy of this class has a variable CFR of 75-95 0 / \ o depending on the sodium content and the surface tension,
while the alloy according to the invention enables a constant CFR of 65% regardless of the sodium content. This low and constant CFR is a result of the low and constant surface tension, the improved flowability and the maintenance of the modifying properties in each alloy.
Again, the low sodium content and the high surface activity of the lithium and / or other additives enable a marked reduction in dross formation.
Execution, example A specific alloy according to the invention has the following composition:
EMI0002.0078
Silicon <SEP> 12.20 <SEP> 0l0
<tb> Iron <SEP> 0.18 <SEP> 0/0
<tb> Sodium <SEP> <B> 0.0080 / 0 </B>
<tb> Lithium <SEP> 0.005 The remainder consists of aluminum and the usual impurities. This alloy has a tensile strength of 1.99 t / cm = and shows an elongation of 10,
5% before breakage. This alloy is subjected to laboratory tests which serve to evaluate the casting properties of the metals. The following results are achieved:
EMI0002.0093
Flowability <SEP> 27.4 <SEP> cm <SEP> flow length
<tb> Surface tension <SEP> 545 <SEP> Dyn / cm
<tb> Centerline loading resistance <SEP> 64 <SEP> 0/0 After holding at 700 ° C for 1 hour, it is found that the microstructure has been completely modified.
Two further alloys according to the invention, hereinafter referred to as alloy A and alloy B, are subjected to practical casting tests under normal production conditions and compared with a conventional casting alloy, which is identified below as alloy C.
The compositions of these alloys are given below:
EMI0002.0094
Component <SEP> alloy <SEP> A <SEP> alloy <SEP> B <SEP> alloy <SEP> C
<tb> silicon <SEP> 12.30 <SEP> 0/0 <SEP> 12.10 <SEP> 0/0 <SEP> 12.50 <SEP> 0/0
<tb> Iron <SEP> 0.21 <SEP> 0l0 <SEP> 0.28 <SEP> 0/0 <SEP> 0.28 <SEP> 0/0
<tb> Sodium <SEP> <B> 0.0091 / 0 </B> <SEP> 0.0040 / 0 <SEP> 0.018 <SEP> 0 / <B> 0 </B>
<tb> Lithium <SEP> 0.0041 / 0 <SEP> <B><I>0.005010</I> </B> <SEP> - The results of the tests show that alloys A and B are at lower molten metal temperatures (about 50 C lower) than alloy C could be cast while still maintaining equivalent mold fill, and the resulting increased production,
how it is achieved with alloys A and B due to the improved cast properties, amounts to approximately 15%.
