<tb> geringem <SEP> Masse <SEP> kompressibel. <SEP> -Die <SEP> Volumenabnahme

'Huber <SEP> 0,736 <SEP> cm', <SEP> also <SEP> weniger <SEP> als <SEP> 1/,000.

Heat engine with liquid as working medium The invention relates to a heat engine with liquid (z. B. water) as working medium, deliberately avoiding converting the liquid into steam, since the principle of this machine is based on the incompressibility of liquids.
If you heat a liquid, it expands. The idea of using this extension for work performance seems obvious. Still, technology has apparently neglected to make use of it due to the lack of a favorable combination of known elements. The effect of explosion engines was and is in fact significantly greater and has led to a development. which today has to be described as a catastrophe when we think of the \ 'poisoning of the air we breathe and the noise in traffic centers.
The invention wants to give troubled mankind a machine. which works silently and burns fuel completely. d. H. without leaving toxic exhaust gases.
According to the invention, this is achieved by at least one pair of double-sided, closed working cylinders (z. B. twin cylinders) each with a piston plate and one-sided; on this attached piston rod, which protrudes outward through a sealed opening, furthermore at least one common heat exchanger working in countercurrent with subsequent heater and cooler, with two separate flow systems for a liquid serving as working medium (e.g.
Water) are provided in such a way that the liquid can flow from the cylinder space containing the piston rod via heat exchangers and heaters into the piston rod-free space on the other side of the piston plate of the same cylinder and vice versa, the cross section of the piston rod being dimensioned in such a way that it is at least approximately the difference in volume between cold and warm liquid in the two previous temperature limits, so that when cylinder, exchanger,
Heater and cooler and connections, instead of being filled with liquid and under pressure, in the working stroke, i.e. H. when the piston plate displaces cold liquid from the cylinder space containing the piston rod and through the exchanger, where the liquid absorbs heat, and the heater, where it is further heated up to the intended upper temperature range and thus expanded, into the piston rod-free space of the same cylinder, the pressure in the entire cylinder space is maintained at least to some extent,
so that the pressure on the cross-sectional area of the piston rod, by which area the piston plate is greater on the side free of the piston rod than on the other side, does work at least during a substantial part of the working stroke. The invention is explained below, for example. The working cylinders can be lying or standing, in the latter case the piston rod can protrude upwards or downwards from the cylinder.
For the sake of simplicity, a specific one, namely the last-mentioned La <, e, is assumed here, so that in the exemplary embodiment the piston rod protrudes downward from the cylinder. The piston plate divides the working cylinder into two cavities, which are connected to one another via the exchanger. The actual working piston, however, is the piston rod. The Kol benplatte, which is at its end, only has the task of separating hot and cold working medium and further that, through their movement, to convey the liquid from one cylinder chamber via the heat exchanger to the other.
The seal of the piston plate, which is conductive on the inner cylinder wall, can be of a simple type and does not cause any major frictional losses, because on both sides of the piston plate there is always pressure agreement with the restriction that on the side of the piston plate in the direction of stroke the dynamic pressure is added which is caused by the friction of the liquid in 1 Au, tau @ chcr vCrurSacht wirLi. In the drawing, a pair of cylinders A + B (twin cylinders) is shown in section. In between, the heat exchanger 1 is greatly simplified.
Heater 2 and cooler 3 are only hinted at, the former by a flame, the cooler by cooling fins on the connec tion pipe and a fan. The solid arrows show where these units are currently working, the dotted arrows show where they will work after the change in work cycle. The working medium (liquid) is indicated by short horizontal lines. On the warm side (above) these lines are drawn a little longer (than below) to show that the working medium here has a larger volume per unit of weight. The arrows in the exchanger show the current direction of flow. those in the piston rods 4 the current direction of thrust. A necessary additional guide for the piston rod in addition to the crankshaft is not shown.
On the piston plate 5, the short reinforced line in the middle indicates the head of the piston rod 6, i.e. H. the effective area for the working pressure. The two surfaces of the piston plate are insulated against excess heat (7). 8 is the pressure cylinder, 9 the pressure regulating piston, 10 an annular support for the same when the pressure in the Arbeitszy cylinder falls below the normal working pressure. 11 is a spiral spring, 12 the connection between the working and pressure cylinder and 13 an outflow opening in the event of excess pressure. <tb> With <SEP> the <SEP> movement <SEP> of the <SEP> crank <SEP> <SEP> starts the <SEP> piston plate, <SEP> <SEP> after <SEP> down <SEP> Move <SEP>. <SEP> <SEP> is still not <SEP>
<tb> Work performance <SEP> available.
<SEP> The <SEP> piston plate <SEP> presses
<tb> cold <SEP> water <SEP> from the <SEP> lower <SEP> room <SEP> through <SEP> the <SEP> heat exchanger <SEP> after <SEP> the <SEP> increasing <SEP> < SEP> upper
<tb> space. <SEP> The <SEP> water <SEP> warms up <SEP> itself <SEP> in the <SEP> exchange
<tb> something. <SEP> The <SEP> at the <SEP> exit <SEP> from <SEP> the <SEP> exchange <SEP> still
<tb> missing <SEP> heat <SEP> becomes <SEP> the <SEP> water <SEP> through <SEP> the <SEP> heater
<tb> supplied. <SEP> It <SEP> <SEP> expands <SEP> further <SEP>.
<SEP> Since <SEP> through <SEP> the <SEP> Um, etzun2 <SEP> the <SEP> crank- <SEP> in <SEP> ScfttibbcweLtin_, <SEP> the <SEP> flow through exchanger and heater slowly at first is, it heats up the water more and therefore expands more than the increase in space due to the exit of the piston rod from the cylinder. Before, immediately after the end of the return stroke, the feed pump d. -n cylinder fully filled and thus also made the small vacuum disappear. The difference mentioned (strong expansion of the water, initially slight movement of the piston rod) creates pressure.
Of course, this is transmitted backwards through the heat exchanger. against the flow of the water, also in the lower, cold cylinder space. As a result, the water heats up by a little, what a. is a small advantage, but does not play a role for these considerations. In this example, the working pressure builds itself up and the water can initially be heated to over 100 = in order to accelerate the pressure build-up.
As soon as the working pressure for which the machine is built is reached, it overcomes the spring tension in the pressure cylinder and lifts the pressure piston a little. The associated enlargement of the cavity slows down the further increase in pressure and since the piston movement has also become faster in the meantime, the water flows faster through the exchanger and the heater and thus heats up less. The pressure now remains more or less constant (with the correct setting of the heater). Irregularities are regulated within certain limits by the pressure piston.
But one must not assume that the pressure we have achieved is exhausted by the next short distance of the piston rod. The pressure is increased by the increasing volume of heated water and by the fact that the dimensions of the piston rod emerging from the cylinder chamber correspond exactly to the volume difference of the water at 70 = temperature difference (taking into account the

Working stroke <SEP> [in <SEP> Zwillinst >> @ linder <SEP> and <SEP> a <SEP> necessary flywheel for overcoming the dead center, if at least a second pair of twins is not available, that at 90 degrees shifted stroke works on the same crankshaft. During the return stroke, the process is repeated in the opposite direction. The water flowing back into the lower cylinder space is cooled and contracted. The reduction in volume is continuously compensated for by the appropriately dimensioned piston rod coming back into the cylinder.
If the piston rod were thinner, this would have the already mentioned disadvantage in the working stroke. If it were too thick, however, when it entered the cylinder it would fill more space than would be released by the contraction of the water. Pressure would arise which would counteract the return movement of the piston rod.
The level of the working pressure and also the size of the cross-sectional area of the piston rod are of course essential for the performance of the machine. The level of the working pressure is limited by the necessary seals when the piston rod passes through and the pressure regulating cylinder.
This heat engine is best suited for a reasonably constant continuous output. It is clear that this is a relatively slow-running machine, because liquid cannot be forced through pipes and exchangers as quickly as gaseous working media. Since the machine is not small compared to its output, it is particularly suitable for stationary systems.
It can also work in the lower heat ranges and can therefore even utilize low-quality waste heat. If air cooling is used, the heated air can

In the example described above, water was assumed as the working medium. It will be the task of technology to look for more suitable liquids. For a stationary machine in continuous operation, what is known as Wood's metal or a similar alloy containing bismuth with a very low melting point would be conceivable. Liquid metal has the advantage of good heat conduction, so that less extensive heat exchangers would be required.
Mercury, a very excellent conductor of heat, would be conceivable if it is possible to absorb leakage losses in the piston rod leadthrough and thus avoid evaporation (poisonous). The lower thermal expansion coefficient can be more than compensated for by a higher temperature difference.
If at least two pairs of cylinders work in a cycle offset by 90 degrees, it is conceivable to connect the working cylinders to one another using pressure relief valves. Example: Cylinders A-B form a pair (twin cylinders) and y C- D form another pair. The piston in cylinder A has reached the middle of the work cycle (crank position 3 o'clock). In cylinder C, the piston is at top dead center (12 o'clock) and thus begins its work cycle. The heater upstream of cylinder A is briefly used more intensively by means of automatic control. An overpressure builds up in cylinder A to which the overpressure valve responds, i. H. the pressure is transferred to cylinder C, which immediately begins to work fully.
The problems of air cooling of the working medium during the return cycle are all the easier, the higher the temperature of the liquid compared to the outside air. If the boiling point of the liquid is to be taken into account, it is conceivable that the return stroke is not carried out when the
