Method for producing an oleophilic graphite The present invention relates to a method of oleophilic graphite which has new and useful properties.
It is known to use graphite in the air using z. B. of ball or vibratory mills to mah len. It is also known to mill graphite in water, which graphite oils milled in this way can be incorporated into dispersions.
The present invention relates to a method for the production of an oleophilic graphite, which is characterized in that natural or synthetic graphite is ground in an organic liquid in the absence of air until the graphite particles have a surface area of 20 to 800 m '/ g, preferably 30 to 200 m '-' 1'g. The graphite produced in this way is briefly referred to below as oleophilic> graphite in order to distinguish it from the untreated starting material.
In contrast to the untreated starting material, oleophilic> graphite absorbs n-dotriacontane more than n-butanol.
Both natural and synthetic graphite are known and readily available. The synthetic mate rial is z. B. made of petroleum coke by heating it to 1000 to 3000 C in a vacuum or in an inert gas. Usually it contains 95 to 100 wt. ' Carbon. The natural material can have a slightly lower carbon content and usually has larger crystals.
Satisfactory products can be obtained by milling most organic liquids, but it is preferred to use a liquid the majority of which can be easily removed from the oleophilic graphite. Hence, liquids become. preferred which distill below 500 ″ C and have a viscosity of less than 600 centistokes at 38 C. Liquids which have a surface tension of less than 72 dynes / cm and preferably 10 to 40 dynes / cm at 25 ° C. are preferred.
Suitable organic liquids are hydrocarbons with a low molecular weight, including straight-chain or branched-chain, saturated or unsaturated alkyl compounds, saturated or unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted cycloalkyl compounds and substituted or unsubstituted aromatic compounds.
Examples of such compounds are n-heptane, octene-2,2,2,4-trimethylpentane, cyclohexane, benzene and toluene. Branched-chain alkyl compounds are particularly preferred. Other suitable organic liquids are those compounds which contain fluorine, chlorine or phosphorus and chlorine, e.g. B. Carbon tetrachloride.
Other suitable organic liquids are the polar oxygen compounds, e.g. B. Isopropyl alcohol. Silicone fluids can also be used.
Low molecular weight hydrocarbons such as B. propane, butane and pentane can be used as grinding fluids under pressure.
In order to achieve the best results, the amount of graphite in the mixture of the graphite with the organic liquid should not exceed 50 wtA; Preferably, it should be 2 to 20 wt.
Milling can be carried out in any suitable mill or milling device; As said, it should be continued until an oleophilic graphite with a (z. B. determined by the adsorption of nitrogen) surface of 20 to 800 and preferably of 30 to 200 m = Ig is obtained. This can usually be achieved by milling at normal temperature for the required time, but the temperature of the mixture may optionally e.g. B. be artificially increased up to 400 ° C. In this case, liquids that have a viscosity of up to 600 centistokes at 38C, such as
B Mineral lubricating oils, from spindle oils to bright stock-s>, can be used. One of the quickest and most effective methods is to use a vibrating mill to grind.
When grinding it is necessary to exclude air as much as possible; This can be achieved most easily if the mill is charged with the organic liquid and then with the balls and the graphite. A useful method is to charge the mill with the liquid and half of the balls, then with the graphite and finally with the remaining balls. Such a grinding process can be referred to as (, closed system.
Of course, when using a ball mill, it is desirable to use balls made of a material which does not react with the graphite and which does not wear unduly during grinding. Vibratory mills usually have steel balls which work well for the purpose at hand. It is particularly preferred to use a hard steel core for the balls and grinder.
If desired, a magnetic filter can be used to remove fine steel particles that may be present in the grinding slurry. A recirculation system can also be used in which the slurry is pumped through an external magnetic filter and then returned to the mill. The recirculation system can be semi-continuous with the slurry being pumped out after the milling period and fresh material added to the system.
A suitable vibratory mill is manufactured by Pilamec Limited and sold under the name Megapact.
In an initial stage, the slurry of the oleophilic graphite achieved during grinding can be separated from the grinding balls by sieving or displacing the grinding liquid by another liquid and then sieving.
If an organic liquid with a relatively high boiling point is used for grinding, it may be desirable to replace this liquid with one with a low boiling point. This latter liquid can then be removed by sieving. IT is preferred to use vigorous simmering.
It is also possible to filter the slurry in order to obtain a filter cake consisting of the oleophilic graphite.
In one case, as in the other, it is preferred to remove the last traces of grinding liquid or displacement liquid by placing the oleophilic graphite in a vacuum furnace for several hours. B. is heated to 100 'C and 1 mm He.
In an alternative, which is preferred in certain cases, the milling or displacing fluid is not removed from the oleophilic graphite that remains in the slurry. This approach is most preferred when the milling fluid can also act as a base oil for a lubricating composition.
<I> Example 1 </I> Two oleophilic graphite products according to the present invention were produced from synthetic graphite as described below. In Table 1 below, the properties of these products are compared with those of a ground graphite having the same surface area, which was produced by grinding in air with a very large surface area, the highly absorbent activated charcoal.

A larger oscillation amplitude was achieved. The base oil, BG 150g75, was an unmixed mineral lubricating oil with a viscosity index of 75 and a Redwood I viscosity of 150 seconds at 60 C.
Table 3 above shows that oleophilic graphites can form fats, while this is not possible with graphites ground in oil in the air. It also shows that with substances in branched hydrocarbons, such as. B. Isooctane, ground graphite fat formation can be achieved more easily.
The mill used for grinding was a vibrating mill, which the manufacturer calls the lviegapact mill. In the embodiment used, the grinding chambers were steel cylinders 3.1 cm in inner diameter and 3.8 cm in length, which were almost filled with steel balls 0.6 cm in diameter. The mill was equipped with an electric motor of t / 8 HP and the oscillation could be set from 1-5 mm. In operation, each cylinder was completely filled with the n-heptane, and the steel ball-In and 25-30 g of graphite were added.
About 150 to 200 ec n-heptane thus remained in each cylinder. The ends were then sealed with metal capsules fitted with rubber washers, followed by grinding. After milling, the contents of the cylinders were placed in sieves that retained the spheres and the n-heptane was removed from the oleophilic graphite by rapid evaporation.
In contrast to graphite ground in the air, the oleophilic graphites are suitable for use as thickeners for organic liquids with high molecular weight. The use of oleophilic graphites is the subject of British patent specification No. 1 168 784. Another useful property of oleophilic graphites is that they can be used as adsorbents for waxy components of petroleum distillates and that their dewaxing effect is more selective than is the case with other graphites.
This use of the oleophilic graphites forms the subject of British patent specification No. 1,126,482.
