Cellulose- Polyestergemische.

Process for the preparation of heterocyclic N-glycidyl compounds
The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of new heterocyclic N-glycidyl compounds of the formula
EMI1.1
where Rt and R each represent a hydrogen atom or an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon atom or an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon radical, preferably a lower alkyl radical with 1 to 4 carbon atoms, or where Ri and Rn together represent a divalent aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon radical, preferably a tetramethylene or form pentamethylene radical.
The products of the formula (I) in which Ri and R represent hydrogen atoms or lower alkyl radicals are generally water-soluble.
The new monoepoxides are prepared according to the invention by adding a compound of the formula
EMI1.2
where Rt and R have the meaning given above, and the radical X is a hydroxy-halogenoethyl radical which carries the functional groups on different carbon atoms (in particular a 2-halogen-1-hydroxyethyl radical), treated with agents which split off hydrogen halide.
Halogen atoms are in particular chlorine or bromine atoms. The agents which split off hydrogen halide are preferably alkalis, e.g. B. anhydrous sodium hydroxide or aqueous sodium hydroxide solution. However, other strongly alkaline reagents such as potassium hydroxide, barium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide, sodium carbonate or potassium carbonate can also be used.
The starting materials of the formula (II) are obtained in a manner known per se. So you can z. B. a hydantoin of the formula
EMI1.3
wherein Z has the meaning given above, react under mild conditions with a compound of the formula X-CH - Hal, where Hal represents a halogen atom and X has the meaning given above. The compound of the formula (II) is preferably reacted with an epihalohydrin, especially epichlorohydrin, in the presence of a catalyst such as, in particular, a tertiary amine, a quaternary ammonium base or a quaternary ammonium hydroxide.
Particularly suitable catalysts for the addition of epichlorohydrin are tertiary amines, such as triethylamine, tri-n-propylamine, benzyldimethylamine, N, N'-dimethylaniline and triethanolamine; quaternary ammonium bases such as benzyltrimethylammonium hydroxide; quaternary ammonium salts such as tetramethylammonium chloride, benzyltrimethylammonium chloride, benzyltrimethylammonium acetate, methyltriethylammonium chloride; Hydrazines with a tertiary nitrogen atom, such as 1,1-dimethylhydrazine, which can also be used in quaternized form; also ion exchange resins with tertiary or quaternary amino groups, and also ion exchangers with acid amide groups.
Basic impurities, which can occur in technical commercial form of the Au; transition compounds (111), can also act as catalysts. In such cases it is not necessary to add a special catalyst.
A preferred embodiment of the method is therefore z. B. in that one epihalohydrin, preferably epichlorohydrin in the presence of a catalyst, such as preferably a tertiary amine, a quaternary ammonium base or a quaternary ammonium salt, with a compound of the formula (III) under conditions in which only the more acidic endocyclic HN group is substituted in position 3 of the ring, reacted and in a second stage the product of the formula (II) containing halohydrin groups is treated with agents which split off hydrogen halide.
These reactions are carried out in the manner described above, the above-mentioned compounds being able to be used as catalysts for the addition of epihalohydrin or for the dehydrohalogenation. Particularly good yields are obtained if an excess of epchlorohydrin is used. During the first reaction, before the addition of alkali, a partial epoxidation of the dichlorohydrin of the hydantoin takes place. The epichlorohydrin, which acts as a hydrogen chloride acceptor. is then partially converted to glycerol dichlorohydrin.
In the hydantoins of the formula (III), the NH group has. which lies between the two carbonyl groups has an acidic character and can e.g. can be determined quantitatively by potentiometric titration with alkali.
In the reaction of such Hn dantoine with an excess of epichiorhydrin in the presence of a catalyst, the acidic NH group in position 3 of the ring reacts faster than the NH group in position 1 of the ring. The more acidic NH group can therefore be converted essentially quantitatively with the epichlorohydrin before the weaker acidic NH group has noticeably reacted. If, therefore, the reaction leading to the chlorohydrin is interrupted at the right moment (proof of the consumption of about 1 mole of epichlorohydrin per mole of hydantoin on the basis of a sample of the reaction mixture) and then allowed to react with the equivalent amount of alkali, the monoglycidyl hydantoin of the formula is obtained (I) as the main product. The compound can be obtained neat by recrystallization.
As hydantoins of the formula (III) are, for. B. called: hydantoin. 5-methylhydantoin, 1,3-diaza-spiro- (4.5) decane-2,4-dione. 5,5-diethyl hydantoin. 5-methyl-5-ethylhydantoin and in particular 5,5-dimethylhydantoin.
The (N) 3-glycidyl-5, 5-dimethylhydantoin is obtained in a particularly good yield by the process described. This compound is completely soluble in water.
The monoepoxides of the formula (I) are suitable as modifying agents for epoxy resins, especially for improving the flow properties, in particular for di- and polyglycidyl compounds containing at least one heterocyclic nitrogen-containing ring, such as, for. B. N, N'-diglycidylethylene urea, N, N 'diglycidyl-5, 5-dimethylhydantoin and triglycidyl isocyanurate.
The compounds of the formula (1), provided they are water-soluble, are also suitable for use in the textile sector, in particular for fixing dyes and as a finish on all types of fabrics, such as wool, superpolyamide fibers, acrylonitrile fibers and, above all, regenerated or natural cellulose or cellulose-polyester mixtures.
example 1
A mixture of) 2 g of 5,5-dimethylhydantoin (1 mol), 2775 g of epichlorohydrin (30 mol) and 0.66 g of benzyltrimethylammonium chloride was heated to 118 ° C. for 95 minutes. A sample taken from the reaction mixture then shows, after the excess epichlorohydrin has been distilled off, and the epichlorohydrin formed
1,3-dichloropropane- (2) -ols have an epoxy content of 2.78 epoxy equivalents / kg. The reaction mixture was cooled to 60 ° C. and 42.3 g of finely powdered sodium hydroxide (1.05 mol) were added in small portions with vigorous stirring over the course of 20 minutes. After the addition had ended, the mixture was stirred at 60 ° C. for a further 30 minutes.
The NN'water formed during the reaction was then removed by azeotropic distillation together with part of the epichlorohydrin at 60 ° C. and 35 torr. After cooling, the sodium chloride formed was filtered off and the clear filtrate was concentrated first at 30 torr and then in a high vacuum.
198.5 g (theory for (N) 3-glycidyl-5,5-dimethylhydantoin 184 g) of a pale yellow colored crystal paste with an epoxide content of 4.96 epoxy equivalents per kg (theory for (N) 3-glycidyl- 5.5 dimethyl hydantoin 5.43 epoxy equivalents kg).
The product was recrystallized once from butanone and once from acetone and the (N) 3-glycidyl-5,5dimethylhydantoin was obtained as a pure white crystal powder.
