EMI0001.0028

Process for the production of azo dyes The invention relates to a process for the production of valuable, new azo dyes which are free from sulfonic acid groups and which have the general formula
EMI0001.0007
correspond;
Here R, an alkyl radical with 1-4 carbon atoms or a benzyl radical, R2 a non-ionogenic substituent, A and B radicals of coupling components, m the number 0, 1 or 2, n the number 0 or 1 and X. - the equivalent of an anion.
Among the non-ionic substituents R, halogen, alkyl, trifluoroalkyl, alkoxy and thioether radicals are particularly to be emphasized, the alkyl radicals having 1-4 carbon atoms.
EMI0001.0028
The radicals of the coupling components A and B are preferably those of the 5-pyrazolone, phenol, aminobenzene, naphthol, aminonophthalene and other radicals of the heterocyclic series, in particular the quinoline series. The cationic dye residue is by definition free from sulfonic acid groups.
The new azo dyes are prepared according to the invention by treating azo dyes of the formula with quaternization of the 3-position nitrogen atom of the triazole ring with alkylating, terbenzylating agents R, X and using starting materials free of sulfonic acid groups.
The starting dyes of the formula II can be prepared conveniently by diazotizing suitable amines and then coupling.
Suitable diazo components for producing the starting dyes of the formula II are 1- (aminophenyl) -triazole- (1, 2, 3) and their nonionic substitution products. These compounds can be prepared by reacting nitrophenylazides with acetylenes to 1- (nitrophenyl) -triazolen- (1, 2, 3) and reducing them to the amines.
These diazo components are generally diazotized by methods known per se, for example in an aqueous, mineral acidic solution with nitrium nitrite. Suitable diazo components are, for example:
1- (4'-aminophenyl) -triazole- (1,2,3), 1- (3'-aminophenyl) -triazole- (1,2,3), 1- (3'-chloro-4'-aminophenyl ) -triazole- (1,2,3), 1- (3'-methyl-4'-aminophenyl) -triazole- (1,2,3), 1- (2'-methyl-4'-aminophenyl) - triazole- (1,2,3), 1- (2'-chloro-4'-aminophenyl) -triazole- (1,2,3), 1- (3'-methoxy-4'aminophenyl) -triazoI- ( 1,2,3), 1- (3'-methylthio-4'-aminophenyl) -triazole- (1,2,3), 1- (2'-methoxy-4'-aminopheny1) -triazole- ( 1,2,3), 1- (2'-methylthio-4'-aminophenyl) -triazole- (1,2,3),
1- (3'-propyl-4'-aminophenyl) -triazole- (1,2,3), 1- (2 ', 5'-dimethyl-4'-aminophenyl) -triazole- (1,2,3) , 1- (2 ', 5'-dichloro-4'-aminophenyl) -triazole- (1,2,3), 1- (2'-methyl-5'-methoxy-4'-aminophenyl) -triazole - (1,2,3), 1- (3'-Ethoxy-4'-aminophenyl) -triazole- (1,2,3), 1- (4'-chloro-3'-aminophenyl) -triazole- ( 1,2,3), 1- (4'-ethyl-3'-aminophenyl) -triazole- (1,2,3), 1- (4'-propoxy-3'-aminophenyl) -triazole- (1, 2,3), 1- (3'-chloro-5'-aminophenyl) -triazole- (1,2,3,), 1- (3'-ethyl-5'-aminophenyl) -triazoI- (1,2 , 3)
and 1- (3 ', 5'-dichloro-4'-aminophenyl) -triazole- (1,2,3). Suitable coupling components A- (NH =) "or B are, for example: 1-phenyl-3-methyl-pyrazolone- (5), 1- (s-cyanoethyl) -3-methyl-pyrazolone- (5), 1- ( β-hydroxyethyl) -3-methylpyrazolone (5), 1,3-diphenylpyrazolone (5), 2-methylpyrazolo [2,3-a] benzimidazole, 2-methylpyrazolo [3,2-b] quinazolone , Phenol, p-cresol, m-cresol, 3-chlorophenol, aniline, o-toluidine,
m-toluidine, 3-chloro-aniline, 3-anisidine, 2-anisidine, 1-amino-3-methyl-6-methoxy-benzene, 1-amino-2,5-dimethoxybenzene, N, N-dimethylaniline, N, N-diethylaniline, N-ethyl-N-ss-cyanoethylaniline, N, N-bis- (ss-cyanoethyl) -aniline, N, N-bis- (ss-hydroxyethyl) -aniline, N-methyl-diphenyl am in , Naphthol- (2), naphthol- (1),
1-aminonaphthol- (5), 1-3-dihydroxyisoquinoline, 2-methyl-indole, 1-ethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline, 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline-propionic acid- (1 ) ethyl ester, 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-3-hydroxy-benzo [h] quinoline 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-3,7-dihydroxybenzo [h] quinoline. The coupling of the starting components can take place in a manner known per se, for example in a neutral, acidic or weakly alkaline, aqueous medium.
The quaternization is expediently medium by heating in an inert organic solvent, for. B. in hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene or xylene, halogenated hydrocarbons such as carbon tetrachloride, tetrachloroethane, chlorobenzene, o-dichlorobenzene or nitronaphthalene, or in dimethyl formannide,
Acetonitrile or dimethyl sulfoxide using preferably equivalent amounts of alcoholic agents, for example with methyl chloride, methyl bromide, methyl iodide, ethyl bromide, benzyl chloride, trimethyloxonium borofluoride, dimethyl sulfate, diethyl sulfate, p-toluenesulfonic acid methyl, ethyl
or butyl ester. In the event that the starting materials also have other quaternizable groups than the triazole ring, the use of greater than equivalent amounts of alkylating agent can be advantageous.
The resulting quaternized dyes are sparingly soluble in the solvents used and can be isolated by filtering off. If the quaternized dyes remain partially or completely in solution when using dimethylformamide, dimethylsulfoxide or acetonitrile, they can be deposited by diluting with water and adding water-soluble salts such as sodium or potassium chloride.
The dyes of the formula I prepared by alkaliating the dyes of the formula II can be purified by dissolving them in water and separating them by adding water-soluble salts, for example sodium or potassium chloride.
The dyes obtained according to the process contain the anionic radical X-, which is preferably the radical of a strong acid, for example sulfuric acid or its half-ester or an arylsulfonic acid or a halogen ion. These anions can, however, also be replaced by the residues of other acids, for example phosphoric acid, hydrofluoric acid, formic acid, acetic acid, tartaric acids, lactic acid. The dye salts can also be converted into double salts with inorganic salts, for example with zinc chloride.
The dyes obtained according to the process are outstandingly suitable for dyeing and printing fully synthetic fibers made from polymers and mixed polymers of acrylonitrile and dicyanethylene, real color shades being obtained. The dyes can also be used for dyeing and printing tannin cellulose materials, silk and leather.
In the following examples, parts mean parts by weight.

After removing a possible excess of nitrous acid with amidosulfonic acid, the clear diazonium salt solution becomes a solution of 13.5 parts of 3-methyl-N,
