Curable mixtures based on diglycidyl o-phthalate with a high epoxide content Glycidyl phthalates are known in the literature and have been described several times (see, for example, the German patent 968500, the English patents 766771 </ B> and 884033 and U.S. Patents 3,053,855 and 3,073,803).
All examples from the literature have low epoxy contents (33-71.3 loo of theory). These products, unless they can be improved by a wasteful cleaning operation, have unsatisfactory properties for most technical purposes.
In general, such products either have a high chlorine content that is inversely proportional to the epoxide content, which is detrimental to the electrical properties, or they have a high hydroxyl content or even unreacted acid groups, so that the storage stability and the useful life of the mixture ready for processing in is shortened in an unacceptable manner. Often it is also a question of poorly defined, higher molecular weight, condensed products which have a high viscosity and a dark color.
In the trade, such a diglycidyl phthalate was offered for a while as an adhesive in the form of a deep brown chattering resin, tough at room temperature, with about 3.5 epoxy equivalents / kg, but has since been withdrawn from the market.
It has now been found that a diglycidyl o-phthalate with an epoxy content of at least 5.5 epoxy equivalents / kg (theory: 7.18 epoxy equivalents / kg = 11.5% epoxy oxygen) compared to the previously known Diglycidyl o-phthalate with a low epoxide content has a number of surprising technical advantages.
Due to the higher purity, the viscosity build-up during storage is very low. A sample of diglycidyl o-phthalate with e.g. B. 6.70 epoxy equivalents / kg and an initial viscosity of 660 cP at 25 C had a viscosity of 810 cP at 25 C after storage for 24 hours at 120 C and a viscosity of 1090 cP / 25 after 48 hours at 120 C C.
The epoxy content had dropped to 6.31 epoxy equivalents / kg in the course of this test. Less pure samples gel with the same treatment within hours or even fractions of a fraction, depending on the epoxy content, amount and type of contamination, even without the addition of hardener.
Furthermore, curable mixtures of diglycidyl o-phthalate with a high epoxy content and customary hardeners for epoxy resins, such as in particular polycarboxylic anhydrides, are characterized by a long service life at 80 C; at 120 C the mixture gels within a short time (latent system), a property that is very desirable in processing technology.
A diglycidyl-o-phthalate with 6.70 epoxy equivalents / kg (100 parts by weight), mixed with the amounts of hardener and accelerator specified below, has the following useful lives (viscosity increase of the resin / hardener mixture up to 1500 cP for the specified Temperature, measured in a Höppler viscometer) and gel times to:

<tb> **) <SEP> = <SEP> methyl-endomethylene-tetrahydrophthalic anhydride.
As a result of its low viscosity, the system is also more flexible. An epoxy resin / anhydride hardener mixture provided with 200% filler (quartz flour) can still be poured perfectly, while an otherwise analogous system, which instead of diglycidyl-o-phthalates with 6,
70 epoxy equivalents / kg contains one with just 3.27 epoxy equivalents, only 115%. is fillable.
The new substance is a yellowish, low-viscosity liquid of approx. 500-700 eP at 20 C, which tends to crystallize with epoxy contents of more than 90% of theory (6.5 epoxy equivalents / kg).
In the liquid part, the crystals melt again at around 40 C, so that there are no processing disadvantages.
The diglycidyl o-phthalate with a high epoxy content can be mixed with the usual hardeners for epoxy resins, e.g. B. Polycarboxylic anhydrides such as phthalic anhydride, or polyamines such as diethylenetriamine harden to infusible and insoluble products that have excellent mechanical and electrical properties and are therefore versatile applications in industry and technology.
In this way, hardenable mixtures of diglycidyl phthalate and hardeners and, if appropriate, other additives such as active thinners, plasticizers, pigments, extenders and fillers as paints, varnishes, dipping resins, casting resins, impregnating resins, laminating resins, molding compounds, embedding and Isolation compounds are used in the electrical industry as well as adhesives.
The diglycidyl o-phthalate with a high epoxy content can also be used as a reactive diluent for other known epoxy resins, such as, for example, polyglycidyl ethers of polyphenols, such as bisphenol A (= bis (p-hydroxyphenyl) dimethyl methane).
The present invention therefore relates to curable mixtures or molding compositions which are used to produce moldings, such as castings or compacts, or flat structures, such as paint films or adhesives, and which are characterized in that they are (1) a diglycidyl -o-phthalate with an epoxy content of at least 5.5 epoxy equivalents / kg, and preferably an epoxy content of at least 6.0 epoxy equivalents / kg, and (2)
contain a hardener for epoxy resins.
A diglycidyl o-phthalate with a high epoxide content was produced according to the following working procedure (no protection is claimed for the production process in the context of the present application): The apparatus consists of a reaction flask equipped with a stirrer, thermometer, dropping funnel, a water separator, which Specifically heavier solvents (epichlorohydrin) are returned to the reaction flask and placed on top of an intensive cooler.
The whole apparatus is built in such a way that it can be operated under vacuum. In order to compensate for pressure fluctuations, it is advisable to connect a large piston in the form of an air chamber to the apparatus.
166 g of o-phthalic acid (1 mol = 2 equivalents) who are heated in the reaction flask of the apparatus described above with 925 g (10 mol; equivalents ratio 1: 5) technical epichlorohydrin (ECH) to 90 ° C. At this temperature, 20 g of a 50% aqueous solution of tetramethylammonium chloride are introduced, which triggers an exothermic but easily controllable reaction.
The temperature is allowed to rise to about 95 ° C. and is kept between 92-94 ° C. until the reaction has subsided. The course of the addition is monitored with the aid of a pH electrode. The pH is initially 1, after the addition of the catalyst 3.5, then increases in the course of the reaction, reaches 6.5 after a reaction time of 15 minutes and then changes very quickly to the alkaline region. After a further 2 minutes, a pH of 9.9 is already read off.
The pH electrode is removed, a dropping funnel with 200 g (2.5 mol = 25% excess) of 50% aqueous sodium hydroxide solution is attached and another 3.2 g of 50% catalyst solution is metered in. The apparatus is placed under vacuum,
with ECH to distill and water begins to separate out of the reaction mixture. At a constant internal temperature of 60 C, corresponding to an initial pressure of 140-150 mm Hg, the sodium hydroxide solution is added drop by drop, the water introduced and the water formed being distilled off azeotropically with ECH. The rate of entry is adjusted so that the reaction time is 90 minutes. The ECH freed from the water is continuously returned to the reaction mixture.
While the sodium hydroxide solution is being added, the vacuum must be slowly improved and amounts to 90-100 mm Hg towards the end of the reaction. 140-150 ml of water are excreted.
For working up, the apparatus is ventilated and 600 ml of water are added to the reaction mixture, the sodium chloride which has separated out is dissolved by stirring and the aqueous phase is separated off in a separating funnel. The organic phase is washed twice with 200 ml of sodium hydroxide solution (2.5%), once with saturated mononatrium phosphate solution and twice more with water. ECH is distilled off in a rotary evaporator using a water jet pump and the residue is dried for 30 minutes at 70 ° C. in a high vacuum.
224 g of a light yellow, low-viscosity product (viscosity approx. 600 cP at 25 ° C.) are obtained, corresponding to a mass yield of 80.5% of theory. The epoxy content is 6.94 epoxy equivalents / kg = 96.4% of theory,
the chlorine content 0.72%. (Percentages always mean percentages by weight in the above working instructions).
Example 1 100 g diglycidyl-o-phthalate with an epoxy content of 6.65 epoxy equivalents / kg, a hydroxyl content of 0.24 equivalents / kg and a total chlorine content of 1,
2% were with 100 g of hexahydrophthalic anhydride as the hardening agent and 6 g of a sodium alcoholate acting as a hardening accelerator (prepared by dissolving 0.82 parts by weight of sodium metal in 100 parts by weight of 2,4-dihydroxy-3-hydroxymethylpentane)
