' Dans la forme d'exécution du dispositif de coulée représentée à la fig. 5, le chauffage est effectué par effet Joule au moyen de deux anneaux conducteurs 6 se trou vant l'un à l'entrée et l'autre à la sortie de l'orifice de côulée,
'ces deux anneaux étant chacun relié à l'une des bornës d'une source de courant électrique continu ou alternatif et isolés de la chemise de refroidissement de sorte que le passage du courant entre les anneaux *ne se fait que par l'intermédiaire de la colonne de métal qui se trouve engagée dans l'orifice de coulée et qui est ainsi chauffée par effet Joule.
L'a capacité du rriôyen de refroidissement doit être telle-.que, pour une puissance de chauffage inférieure à une çértaine' limite, donc également en l'absence de chauffage;
Method and device for pouring, with an adjustable flow rate, a molten metal The present patent relates to a process for pouring, with an adjustable flow rate, through an orifice, a molten metal and a device for the implementation of this process. ceded.
The present process for pouring molten metal through an orifice at an adjustable rate is to simply allow the molten metal to flow into the orifice and to regulate the flow rate by means of a shutter device. orifice mechanics. This method has the advantage of its simplicity, but it does not however give complete satisfaction because the devices used for its implementation have numerous drawbacks.
Such devices, for example the devices which are used in industrial installations for the continuous casting of steel for casting the steel from the intermediate containers into the ingot molds, comprise casting burets made of refractory materials, in particular of ceramic based. of zirconium silicate or based on zirconium oxide, which can be sealed by means of stoppers made of the same material as the burette and operated by mechanical means. De such devices present the drawback of corroding very quickly, under the action of molten metal, during casting, and of having to be exchanged, practically after each casting.
This progressive and rapid corrosion further complicates the regulation of the flow rate of the steel and it also causes the ingots to be contaminated by undesirable substances. Finally, in the case where, for one reason or another, the flow must be interrupted during the casting, its resumption is very difficult, at least in the case where the ladle or the intermediate container containing the metal is not is not provided with heating means, because it generally requires remelting the part of the metal which is engaged in the pouring orifice and which solidifies if the interruption of the flow is of a certain duration.
The aim of the invention is to avoid these drawbacks. To this end, this method according to the invention is characterized in that the walls of the orifice are cooled so as to obtain solidification of the metal from the periphery and that the mass of the metal is heated through sant the orifice, so as to obtain the desired flow rate.
The device for carrying out this process is characterized in that it comprises a receptacle provided with at least one pouring orifice, means for cooling the walls of this orifice and means for heating the mass of the metal. passing through the orifice, at least one of these cooling and heating means being adjustable.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, two embodiments of the device for implementing the method according to the invention.
Fig. 1 shows a sectional view of the entire positive device in its application as a tundish. Fig. 2 shows, in section and on a larger scale, the part of the pouring basket where the pouring hole is located, in accordance with a first embodiment of the device.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view, along the sectional plane shown by line III-III of FIG. 2.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view, along the same sectional plane as that of FIG. 3, from. detail of the device shown in FIG. 2, according to a variant.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view comparable to that of FIG. 2, of a second embodiment of the device. The pouring basket shown in FIG. 1 comprises a wall 1 made of a refractory material. In the bottom of the pouring basket is formed the pouring orifice 2, shown on a larger scale in FIG. 2. The hole shown shown in figs. 1 and 2 has a circular section, its upper part is flared in the shape of a truncated cone.
Of course, the pouring orifice can have a section of any other shape. The walls of this orifice are formed in the circular part shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, by a cooling jacket 3 made of a metal that is a good heat conductor, for example copper, in which a cooling fluid, for example water, circulates. This cooling jacket is surrounded by a device making it possible to heat the mass of the metal which is engaged in the pouring orifice without, however, the part in contact with the walls of the pouring orifice constantly being cooled.
In the embodiment of the casting device shown in FIG. 2, the heating is carried out by induction, by means of a pipe 4 made of a good conductive metal, for example copper, cooled internally by a current of cold water, wound in several turns, concentrically, around the jacket. cooling without touching it and connected to the terminals of a high or medium frequency current generator.
As seen in Figs. 3 and 4, the cooling jacket 3 does not form a continuous ring but has a cut in its entire length so as not to absorb a significant amount of energy from the induction heating device. The cooling jacket could advantageously be divided into several insulated sections, therefore comprising several pure necks in the direction of the generator, which would correspondingly reduce the absorption of electrical energy.
According to the variant shown in FIG. -l, the cooling jacket 3 forms grooves on its inner wall which increase the surface in contact with the metal inside the orifice. The inner wall of the cooling jacket will advantageously be ragged and be coated with a layer promoting the adhesion of the solidified metal crust which makes it possible both to reduce the risks of this crust detaching and to improve the thermal exchanges between the metal to be cast and the cooling jacket.
'In the embodiment of the casting device shown in FIG. 5, the heating is carried out by the Joule effect by means of two conductive rings 6 being hole one at the inlet and the other at the outlet of the côule hole,
'these two rings being each connected to one of the terminals of a source of direct or alternating electric current and isolated from the cooling jacket so that the passage of current between the rings * is only done through the metal column which is engaged in the pouring orifice and which is thus heated by the Joule effect.
The capacity of the cooling rriôyen must be such-. That, for a heating power below a limit çértaine, therefore also in the absence of heating;
all the metal engaged in the pouring orifice is cooled below its solidifying temperature. f'ron. The capacity of the heating medium must be such that, for a given power, greater than the limit reiterated above, at least a part of the metal is molten, in the axial part of the orifice, by forming a flow duct, the part of the metal in contact with the wall of the orifice being solidified so as to form a crust 5 of a certain thickness.
The metal can therefore flow without causing corrosion of the walls of the pouring orifice. As for the -maximal value of the heating power, it can be chosen so as to correspond to the diàm8-maximutri that one wishes to confer on the flow duct: in the case where one wishes to eliminate the risk of accidentally melting the wall of the orifice, therefore the cooling plug. However, it is also possible to have a higher heating power in order to increase the speed of opening of the orifice.
In the latter case, it is advisable to have means for controlling the opening diameter and means for rapidly reducing the heating power when the desired opening is obtained.
The operation of the device described is the same in the two embodiments shown in FIGS. 2 and 5: the part of metal which is in contact with the walls of the orifice, that is to say of the cooling jacket, is cooled. The cooling capacity is adjusted so that the part of the metal in contact with the wall is solidified and forms a crust 5 of a certain thickness between the wall and the central part of the metal 7 which remains in the molten state.
By increasing the intensity of the heating, which can be obtained by increasing the power delivered by the high frequency current generator or the intensity of the current passing through the zone of metal sent into the pouring orifice, we increase the diameter of the molten zone and hence the metal flow rate.
It is also possible to operate by keeping the intensity of heating constant and by varying the cooling. However, since the heating is easier to control than the cooling, the cooling will preferably be left constant and the heating will be varied.
In this latter manner, a very rapid adjustment of the start of flow of the metal through the orifice can be effected.
For example, in the case where the molten metal to be cast is steel and the cooling jacket of the pouring hole is copper, this orifice having a diameter of 30 mm and a cooled length of 10 mm. , with a cooling capacity of 3.4 kW, which corresponds to a heat dissipation of 80 cal / cm s through the wall of the cooling jacket, a reduction of approx. 0.6 sec. 3 to 2 cm 'of the molten section, this reduction in section therefore allows a reduction of about a third of the flow rate of the metal.
Under the same conditions, it takes 2.2 sec to reduce the flow rate by 75% when the diameter of the molten part of the metal increases from 2 to 1 cm.
The device and the method described can be used and implemented for casting other molten metals than steel and they can even be adapted to the casting of a non-conductive molten substance by replacing the heating means described above. by a so-called capacitive effect heating device, a system well known in itself. ..
Thus, the device described. makes it possible to avoid contact of the molten metal with the walls of the pouring orifice and, consequently, to eliminate the corrosion of these walls.
The device. described casting can therefore be used for a virtually unlimited number of casting operations without requiring repair or exchange: As a result, this device has the advantage of making it possible to arrange several casting orifices on one and the same container which is particularly advantageous, for example in the case where it is desired to obtain, by the process of continuous casting, an ingot of large section. It is obvious that the multiplication of the number of casting orifices requires that the adjustment of the opening of each of them can be done in an absolutely safe manner.
The casting device also has the advantage of making it possible to obtain a solid metal jet, that is to say of regular geometric shape and constant over time, corresponding to the shape of the section of the casting orifice which is difficult to achieve with known devices in which the presence of a bar or a shutter above the casting orifice prevents it, especially in the vicinity of the closed position of the orifice , the complete filling of this orifice with the liquid during the casting.
Obtaining a solid metal jet is a big advantage, in particular with regard to the safety of the operators in the vicinity of the mold, in the case of the continuous casting of the steel, because it reduces the risks. splash of molten metal drops.
