Sliding member The present invention relates to a sliding member comprising a base metal.
Internal combustion engines and compressors reach higher speeds and are subjected to greater thermal stresses than older models. The resulting more severe lubrication conditions have led to more frequent seizures or, at least, wear. faster piston segments.
In order to overcome these difficulties, various wear resistant products have been developed and new techniques for surface coating by chrome plating or spray metallization, for example, have been developed and partially used. However,
none of the measures proved to be entirely satisfactory.
The aim of the invention is to overcome these drawbacks. The sliding member according to the invention is characterized in that it comprises a sliding coating covering the base metal and composed of a mixture of steel and lead, the ratio between the surface of lead and the total surface of the coating being between 10 and 70 () / o.
The appended drawing represents, schematically and by way of example, an embodiment of the grout member which is the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a partial axial section of the sliding member.
Fig. 2 is a micrograph (30 times enlargement) of the surface of a metallic layer deposited by projection on a sliding member.
Fig. 3 is a micrograph (50 times magnification) of a section of the spray-deposited layer illustrated in FIG. 2.
The sliding surface 1 of each sliding member is coated with a layer 2, applied by spraying and constituted by a mixture of steel and lead as illustrated in FIG. 1. The base metal of the slide member is steel with high tensile and breaking strength or cast iron for piston rings, malleable cast iron or any other cast iron with high tensile strength. tenacity.
The sliding surface of such a sliding member is produced by spraying a mixture of steel and lead. Before the metallization operation, the base metal of the sliding member which has undergone a preliminary treatment is pickled in order to ensure strong adhesion of the metallized layer to the surface of the base metal.
Spray metallization is carried out using two machines designed for the simultaneous mixing and spraying of steel and lead. The lead used for this purpose must be metallic lead in the pure state, the steel being a carbon steel whose carbon content allows quenching, that is to say with a carbon content which is not less than 0.2 0/0.
The spray-deposited metal layer is rectified until a sliding surface with the desired finish is obtained. A polished surface of a layer thus deposited as well as a section through such a layer are illustrated in FIGS. 2 and 3, respectively.
As can be seen, the sliding surface has a structure consisting of a fine mixture of steel and lead forming an excellent surface layer which satisfies the requirements for wear resistance and sliding properties.
Metals exhibiting excellent sliding properties generally only have insufficient wear resistance and, conversely, sliding members provided with excellent coatings satisfying the two aforementioned conditions are, in fact, very rare.
In many cases, the mechanical resistance of the sliding members gives rise to problems and it has been practically impossible to produce sliding members satisfying each of the three essential properties which are: mechanical strength, wear resistance and a good coefficient. friction.
The sliding surface of the sliding members is produced by spray metallization. This process allows complete freedom of choice as to which high strength metals should be used as the base metal.
Since the ferrous part of the mixture deposited by spraying consists of carbon steel, it undergoes vigorous quenching during the deposition of the steel particles heated to very high temperature with a view to metallization, the result being that the sliding member thus formed has excellent wear resistance.
In the event that such a member should run out of lubricant so as to incur a risk of seizing, the lead contained in the sliding surface would be extracted by fusion and would form a very thin film between the sliding surface and the surface of the motor. adjacent organ. The lead then acts as a solid lubricant, avoiding direct contact between metal surfaces and, consequently, any seizure of these surfaces.
The mixing rate of the metal mixture to be sprayed is chosen so as to best suit the type and conditions of use of the internal combustion engine or compressor for which it is intended, as well as other factors. ,.
As regards the sliding surface, the mixing rate expressed in the form of the ratio between the surface of the lead and the total surface of the layer deposited by spraying is between 10 and 70%.
For a ratio of less than 2% lead, the sliding member will not exhibit sufficient sliding properties. On the contrary, if the ratio is greater than 70%. the risk of seizing is eliminated to the detriment of wear resistance with increased abrasion loss.
Example Cast iron containing 3.08% C, 1.97% Si, 0.41% Mn, 0,
16% P and 0.045% S was machined to obtain a specimen measuring 18.0 mm in width, 12.0 mm in length and 5.0 mm in height. The sliding surface of the specimen was provided with five grooves each 0.5 mm wide and 0.5 mm deep; these grooves were arranged parallel to each other at regular intervals.
A mixture of molten steel and lead was sprayed onto the surface at a rate such that the resulting surface area ratio was 60% steel to 40% lead. After polishing, the sliding surface was subjected to an abrasion test.
The test was carried out using an apparatus of the plane sliding friction type, the friction speed being 5 m / second. Lubrication was provided with a lubricant mixture consisting of 50% paraffinic lubricating oil and 50% purified lampante oil. The specimen was subjected to sliding until a
seizure, after which the relationship between frictional load and wear was examined and a seizure test was carried out. The metal against which the sliding was operated was cast iron of composition 2.90% C, 2.08% Si, 0.55% Mn, 0,
22 0/0 of P and 0.032% of S. The results of the tests revealed that a control specimen which had not received a metallic layer deposited by projection was subject to seizing under a friction load of 50 kg / cm2,
whereas the sliding surface which had been sprayed with lead showed an abrasion loss of 0.1 mg under a load of 50 kg / cm2. Although the loss of material increases slightly with the increase in the. load, the sliding surface which has been sprayed with lead has excellent wear resistance compared to the surface which has not been treated.
