Phenylthiogruppe; Acylgruppen, beispielsweise Kohlenwasserstoffsulfonyl- gruppen, wie niedere Alkylsulfonyl- oder Phenylsulfo- nylgruppen, ferner niedere Carbalkoxygruppen, Carbon- säure- oder Sulfonsäuregruppen; von Ammoniak oder primären oder sekundären organischen Aminen abge leitete Carbonsäure- oder Sulfonsäureamidgruppen, wie Carbonsäure- und Sulfonsäure-N-mono- oder -N,N-di- niederalkylamidgruppen; primäre, sekundäre und tertiäre Aminogruppen, wobei in sekundären und tertiären Aminogruppen als Substituenten vorzugsweise niedre Alkylgruppen in Betracht kommen;

Process for the production of nitro dyes of the acridone series The present invention relates to a process for the production of new nitro dyes of the acridone series.
It has been found that valuable nitro dyes of the acridone series of the formula I can be obtained
EMI0001.0005
in which R denotes an optionally substituted aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, carbocyclic-aromatic or heterocyclic radical and in which the rings A and B can be further substituted and fused with other rings is obtained if a compound of the formula II,
EMI0001.0006
in which one of Y1 and Y2 is hydrogen and the other is the carboxyl group or a reactive func tio nelles derivative thereof, for example a halide such as a chloride or bromide, or an ester, e.g. B.
is a lower alkyl ester, for the rings A and B that stated under formula I applies and R has the meaning given under formula I, under ring-closing conditions, optionally in the presence of an acidic condensing agent, is reacted. 2 Compounds of the formula II in which Y1 is the carboxyl group and Y2 is hydrogen are preferred for preparative reasons.
Particularly valuable as disperse dyes are compounds which can be prepared according to the invention without substituents which dissociate acidically in water and form water-soluble anions, such as the sulfonic acid, carboxylic acid or phosphoric acid group.
Aliphatic radicals embodying R are, for example, straight- or branched-chain alkyl or alkenyl groups with up to 18, preferably with up to 12, carbon atoms, which can be substituted. These aliphatic radicals, for example the hydroxyl group, lower alkoxy groups, mononuclear aryloxy groups such as the phenoxy, an alkylphenoxy or halophenoxy group, acyl groups such as alkanoyl, carbalkoxy, alkoxy-carbalkoxy or carbocycloalkoxy groups, acyloxy groups, can be used as substituents. such as lower carbonic acid half-ester groups or tosyloxy groups, amino groups, especially tertiary amino groups, such as di-lower alkylamino groups, acylamino groups,
such as lower alkanoylamino or mononuclear aroylamino groups and carbocyclic-aromatic radicals, eg. B. the phenyl, the 1- or 2-naphthyl radical, or heterocyclic groups, eg. B, 2-thienyl, 2-furyl or 2-tetrahydrafuryl radicals; As substituted alkyl radicals, the α- or β-phenethyl and especially the benzyl group as well as the furfuryl and tetrahydrofurfuryl groups are to be emphasized.
Cycloaliphatic groups embodying R are, for example, cycloalkyl groups with preferably 5- or 6-membered rings, and especially the cyclohexyl group.
If R is a carbocyclic aromatic radical, this radical belongs to z. B. the naphthalene, but preferably the benzene series; it can contain customary ring substituents.
Heterocyclic radicals embodying R can be aromatic as well as non-aromatic in character; aromatic-heterocyclic radicals are preferably 5- or 6-membered and can have a single heteroatom or several identical or different heteroatoms; they can also be condensed, for example with a benzo radical. Examples are triazolyl, tetrazyl, 2- or 4-pyridyl, 2-quinolinyl, 1,3,5-triazinyl, 2-benzoxazolyl, 2-benzthiazolyl radicals, which can have customary ring substituents. Before ferred non-aromatic-heterocyclic radicals are also 5- or 6-membered; Examples are the 2-thiazolinyl, the 2-imidazolinyl, the 2- (6-methylpenthiazolinyl) radical.
All the carbocyclic-aromatic rings of the nitro-acridone dye of the formula I can contain customary substituents in dyes, for example halogens such as fluorine, chlorine or bromine; Alkyl groups, preferably lower alkyl groups with up to 4 carbon atoms, but also higher alkyl groups, mononuclear aryl groups, such as the phenyl or p-methylphenyl group; Alkoxy groups, such as the methoxy or ethoxy group; Alkylthio groups, such as the methylthio or ethylthio group; mononuclear aryloxy or arylthio groups, such as the phenoxy or
Phenylthio group; Acyl groups, for example hydrocarbylsulphonyl groups, such as lower alkylsulphonyl or phenylsulphonyl groups, and also lower carbalkoxy groups, carboxylic acid or sulfonic acid groups; carboxylic acid or sulfonic acid amide groups derived from ammonia or primary or secondary organic amines, such as carboxylic acid and sulfonic acid-N-mono- or -N, N-di- lower alkylamide groups; primary, secondary and tertiary amino groups, lower alkyl groups preferably being suitable as substituents in secondary and tertiary amino groups;
furthermore acylamino groups, especially lower alkanoylamino or mononuclear aroylamino groups, and furthermore the nitro, cyano or trifluoromethyl group.
If the rings A and B have condensed further, then they mainly contain benzo residues. For example, the ring A can contain a benzo radical in the 7,8 or 6,7 position. The ring A is advantageously unsubstituted, or it contains a lower alkyl, such as the methyl or ethyl group, or alkoxy group, such as the methoxy or ethoxy group, or halogen, such as chlorine or bromine, as substituents, the ring B can be mainly halogen, like chlorine, especially in the 2-position. However, the ring B is primarily unsubstituted.
If free amino groups are present in the end product of formula I, they can still be acylated, where as acylating agents reactive functional derivatives, eg. B. lower fatty acids, such as acetic acid, or mononuclear aromatic mono- or dicarboxylic acids, such as benzene carboxylic acid, or a benzene dicarboxylic acid, can be considered.
Starting materials of the formula II, in which Y1 represents the carboxyl group and Y2 represents hydrogen, are obtained, for example, by condensation of an aminobenzenecarboxylic acid of the formula
EMI0002.0029
with a benzene compound of the formula
EMI0002.0030
wherein the rings A and B, as indicated above, can be substituted and Hal means chlorine or bromine be, according to methods known per se [s. H. B. Nisbet, Journal of the Chem. Soc. (London) 1933, 1372-73J.
Starting materials of the formula II, in which Y2 is the carboxyl group and Y1 is hydrogen, can have the formula, for example by condensation of an optionally further substituted aromatic amine
EMI0002.0032
with a 2,6-dichloro- or 2,6-dibromo-3-nitro-benzene-carboxylic acid according to K. Lehmstedt and K. Schrader [reports of the German Chemical Society Volu men 70, 1556-38 (1927)] and subsequent Aus exchange of the remaining chlorine or bromine atom for the group -SR. The ring closure of the compound of the formula II to the end product of the formula I takes place in a manner known per se. conveniently by heating and before geous in the presence of an acidic condensing agent.
Preferred acidic condensing agents are phosphorus oxychloride, polyphosphoric acids and sulfuric acid. More details about this reaction are given in R. M. Acheson, The Chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds, Acridines, pp. 105-117 (1956).
The new nitro dyes of the acridone series, which do not contain any acidic dissociating water-solubilizing groups, are suitable for dyeing hydrophobic, synthetic organic fiber material, for example for dyeing textile material consisting of high molecular weight organic esters, such as cellulose di- or triacetate, but especially for dyeing textile material made from polymeric esters of aromatic polycarboxylic acids with polyhydric alcohols, especially from polyethylene glycol terephthalate or polycyclohexanediol terephthalate.
However, these dyes can also be used for dyeing synthetic polyamide fibers, such as polyhexamethylene adipamide, polycaprolactam or polyaminoundecanoic acid. In addition, depending on their composition, they are suitable for dyeing or pigmenting paints, oils and waxes, and cellulose derivatives, especially cellulose esters such as cellulose acetate, since many nitro acridone dyes that can be prepared according to the invention are in some common organic solvents, e.g. B. in acetone or methyl ethyl ketone, are soluble.
The fiber materials mentioned are preferably colored with the nitroacridone dyes which can be prepared according to the invention and are sparingly soluble in water from aqueous dispersion. It is therefore advisable to finely subdivide end products of the formula I which can be used as disperse dyes by grinding with dispersants and possibly other grinding auxiliaries. Anionic dispersants suitable for this are, for example, the alkylarylsulfonates, the condensation products of formaldehyde with naphthalenesulfonic acid, the lignosulfonates; Suitable non-ionic dispersants are the fatty alcohol or alkylphenol polyglycol ethers with a higher alkyl group.
The dyeing of the polyester fibers with the dyes which are obtainable according to the invention and which are sparingly soluble in water from aqueous dispersion are carried out according to the processes customary for polyester materials. Polyesters of aromatic polycarboxylic acids with polyvalent alcohols are preferably dyed at temperatures above 100 ° C. under pressure.
However, the dyeing can also be carried out at the boiling point of the dyebath in the presence of dye carriers, for example alkali metal phenyl phenolates, polychlorobenzene compounds or similar auxiliaries, or by the padding process and subsequent heat treatment, e.g. B. Heat setting at 180-210 C, can be made. Cellulose di-acetate fibers are preferably dyed at temperatures of 80-85 C, while cellulose triacetate fibers and synthetic polyamide fiber material are advantageously dyed at the boiling point of the dye bath.
When dyeing the last-named types of fiber, the use of color carriers is unnecessary. Nitroacridone dyes which can be prepared according to the invention can also be used for printing the materials mentioned by customary methods.
The end substances of the formula I which can be used as disperse dyes are absorbed very well on the aforementioned hydrophobic organic fiber material, especially on polyethylene glycol terephthalate fibers, and produce strong yellow to orange colors on this fiber material that are very light, wash and walk -, rubbing, welding, sublimation, solvents and decoration are legal. They also have in organic solvents, e.g. B. dimethylformamide, a high molar absorbance.
Another advantage of the new nitroacridone dyes is that they can be easily combined with blue anthraquinone dyes.
The preferred disperse dyes are end products of the formula I without acidic dissociating water-solubilizing groups in which R denotes the phenyl radical or an alkyl, alkoxy or chlorine-substituted phenyl radical. Such end products are characterized by high color strength and affinity for fiber material made from polyesters, especially from polymeric esters of aromatic polycarboxylic acids with polyhydric alcohols, such as polyethylene glycol terephthalate fibers. In addition, the dyeings produced with them are very fast on this type of fiber, especially light, rub, sublimation and washfast.
However, those water-insoluble end products of the formula I in which R is an alkyl radical are also very valuable, since they have good acid and alkali resistance.
Dyes of the formula I which can be prepared according to the invention and which contain basicizing groups are usually readily soluble in water as salts of a strong inorganic or organic acid. They pull from aqueous, neutral or - advantageous - from weakly acidic liquor, optionally. In the presence of wetting agents, such as addition products of alkylene oxides with higher alcohols, on fiber material made of polymeric or copolymeric acrylonitrile when heated in an open or in a closed vessel under pressure and produce real, especially wash-, decatur- and lightfast yellow to orange colors on this material.
The new nitroacridone dyes of the formula I, which contain acidic dissociating groups in water, for example sulfonic acid groups, can be used for dyeing and printing natural or synthetic polyamide fibers from acidic to neutral baths.
In the following examples the temperatures are given in degrees Celsius. The specified melting points are uncorrected.
EMI0003.0039
24.9 g of 2-nitro-5-n-butylmercapto-diphenylamine-2'-carboxylic acid (prepared by condensation of 3-chloro-4-nitro-in-butylmercapto-benzene with 2-amino-benzene-1-carboxylic acid in the presence of potassium carbonate according to HH Hodgsan and FW Handley, J. Chem. Soc. 1928, 166) are heated to boiling with 110 g of phosphorus oxychloride with thorough stirring over the course of 20 minutes and then kept boiling for a further 30 minutes.
After cooling to room temperature, the excess phosphorus oxychloride is decomposed with 1000 g of ice water. The resulting dispersion is heated to 90-95 for 45 minutes and the precipitated product is filtered off while hot, washed with hot water and then dried. The yield is 18.5 g of nitro dye of the formula given above.
The dye obtained in this example, after grinding with the sodium salt of a condensation product of naphthalene-2-sulfonic acid with formaldehyde in the presence of sodium o-phenyl phenolate, dyes polyethylene glycol terephthalate fibers in green, stuffy yellow tones.
Example 2 24.9 g of 2-nitro-5-n-butylmercapto-diphenylamine-6-carboxylic acid (produced by condensation of 2-nitro-5-chloro-diphenylamine-6-carboxylic acid with n-butyl - mercaptan in the presence of potassium carbanate) are introduced into 210 g of concentrated sulfuric acid and heated to 90-95 for 2 hours with stirring. After cooling, the resulting solution is added dropwise to 1500 g of ice water. The yellow product obtained is filtered off and washed free of acid. To clean it, it is suspended in 500 ml of water, mixed with 5 g of sodium carbonate and then heated to 50 for 45 minutes.
The dye is then filtered off, washed with water and dried. The yield be 17.8 g.
The dye obtained is identical to the product prepared according to Example 1.

18.3 g of 2-nitro-5-phenylthio-diphenylamine-6-carboxylic acid (produced by the condensation of 2-nitro-5-chloro-diphenylamine-6-carboxylic acid with sodium thiophenolate in n-butyl alcohol) are 80 registered in 220 g of polyphosphoric acid. The reaction mixture is heated to 105-110 with thorough stirring and kept at this temperature for 2 hours.
After cooling to 90, the thick, yellow suspension is poured into 2000 g of 65 water. The precipitated yellow product is stirred for a further 10 minutes and then filtered off. It is washed with hot water and dried. The yield is 16 g of the formula given above.
The product can be purified by recrystallization from glacial acetic acid or chlorobenzene.
The dye obtained according to this example dyes after grinding with the sodium salt of a condensation product of naphthalene-2-sulfanic acid with formaldehyde in the presence of sodium-o-phenyl-phenolate polyethylene glycol terephthalate fibers in very good wash, rub, light and sublime green stuffy yellow hues.
Likewise greenish yellow dyes with similarly good coloring properties are obtained if the 18.3 g of 2-nitro-5-phenylthio-diphenylamine-6-carboxylic acid are replaced by equivalent amounts of 2-nitro-5- (4'- chlorophenylthio) diphenylamine-6-carboxylic acid or 2-nitro-5- (4'-methoxyphenylthio) -diphenylamine-6-carboxylic acid replaced.

23.63 g of diphenylamine-4'-methyl-2-nitro-5-n-dodecyl-mercapto-6-carboxylic acid (produced by condensation of diphenylamine-4'-methyl-2-nitro-5-chloro-6-carboxylic acid with n-dodecyl mercaptan in the presence of potassium carbonate) are heated to 90-95 within 20 minutes with 220 g of phosphorus oxychloride. It is then stirred at this temperature until the strong evolution of hydrochloric acid subsides. Then it is heated to boiling during 30 minutes.
After cooling down to 50, the excess phosphorus oxychloride is decomposed with 2200 g of ice water. The resulting yellow dispersion is heated to 9Q-95 for 30 minutes, and the precipitated reddish yellow product is filtered off. It is washed with hot water and dried. The yield is 19.5 g. The product can be purified by recrystallization from glacial acetic acid.
The nitro dye of the above formula dyes in an aqueous dispersion in the presence of sodium o-phenyl phenolate polyethylene glycol terephthalate fibers in very light, wash, rub and sublimation fast reddish yellow shades.
